I think he had been betrayed and hurt by so many that were close to him and lost so much that all he could see was darkness. Vader and Anakin only ever wanted to find peace and return to the light, but all they could see was darkness and thus acted out of fear and anger thinking it would bring peace; like a scared kid in a dark place bumping into the walls because they can’t see. I think the character of Vader is somewhat misunderstood, because I don’t think Vader ever acted out of true selfishness. Vader always sought more power and knowledge for others, he did to help others and even as a Sith Lord he was convinced that what he was doing was helping the galaxy, unlike Sidious who acted out of pure greed and a desire for power. Anakin never desired power, Anakin desired to help and protect those around but eventually saw the dark side as the only way to do that; it was a means to an end. For Sidious the end goal was always more power, he would never stop; Anakin eventually got to that point but was never truely ok with it, where as Sidious reveled in it.

Anakin was doomed from the start. So smart, talented, and worst of all caring. The Jedi must follow duty, and duty is the death of love, which Anakin couldn't let go of. The saddest part is Darth Vader was the mental snap that made him accept he was a bad person. Truly, he was manipulated this whole time.

This is why they limit admission into the Order at the absolute oldest to 3 years old - it is so they can indoctrinate their members into doing so without a second thought. Anakin was too old when he was admitted - and thus he made a terrible Jedi, he wasn't able to do the things that made the Jedi, well, Jedi. If he had been granted the rank of Master the same things would have happened, because in the end it wasn't truly his desire for the role that facilitated his manipulation and subsequent downfall, it was the things that made a Jedi a Jedi, things he wasn't able to do. The shedding of attachments, the removal of emotions, the utter lack of humanity. It was Anakin's humanity that sealed his fate. Likewise goes for Padmé. Even if the Order had allowed Anakin to have her, he was worried for her life, not for his standing within the Order, when he made the decision to kill Mace. It was her life, and her death, that Palpatine used to manipulate him. It was Anakin's attachments and his emotions that Palpatine manipulated and used to pull Anakin to the Dark Side.

This rips out my heart everytime I see this. I can only imagine how much pain and sorrow and regret he feels. I couldnt imagine being taken advantage of like the emp did to him. Using his love and fear of losing her and forcing him to literally light the galaxy on fire, kill everything else he ever knew or loved. Then by his own hand and anger he ends up causing the destruction of the thing he did it all for and loved enough to sell his soul. In my opinion the greatest Greek tragedy ever written in modern times and all time.

i love how his first reaction to padme's grave, is one of depression and regret, sad that he ended up causing his lovers death and then he begins to feel anger, starts to hate himself for what he had done, and taps into his inner rage. this is what i absolutely love of vader/anakin's character, and i hope disney never does this man wrong.

@@SWDude2710For real, just take, Anakin in The Clone Wars for example. He cared so SO much for Ashoka Tano, Padme Amidala, Obi-Wan Kenobi, He really was a true Jedi Knight. Jedi Master, if you will. Anakin was always trying to do the right thing, but he was manipulated by Lord Sidious/The Emperor/Sheev Palpatine/Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine and he was so confused and had no idea what to do because the Jedi council weren’t the kindest to him, but he knew the difference between right and wrong. He was probably so stressed what to do, so when he snapped, and cut off the arm of Master Windu, he felt regret, confusion, sadness, and anger. Which led to him saying “What’ve I done? (This isn’t right, this isn’t the Jedi way. This is the way of the sith.)” but at the same time, still thinking “this is what’s right, they were about to kill a politician, the Jedi aren’t truly good! This is wrong. I’ve stopped evil from venturing forth!” And because of these two mixed up thoughts at this EXACT moment, he couldn’t handle this anymore. So he turned to the dark side, and truly went in psycho mode. He wasn’t aware of what he was doing to his fullest extent, but still, aware. He just couldn’t handle the stress and pain and suffering he’s been through. Such as the tear he shed on Mustafar. So he chose to a side, and stuck to it. After that, he never really thought for himself. Because he knew he couldn’t separate evil from good, and choose. So he did as the emperor told him. Until the day he discovered Luke was his son, he remembered when telling padme they could make things right again, she refused. But what if this isn’t the case for Luke? His son? What if Luke joins him? Now, of course he asked him to join him as a sith. However, remember, by this point he couldn’t tell evil from good. He was so confused, trying to latch on to that string of Justice. But on the second half-built Death Star, seeing Luke stand up for what was right, not killing him because it was the right thing to do, and supposedly sacrificing himself to save the monster he was, he realized what was right, and what was wrong. Finally, after all these years. He was finally free, so he snapped back to the light side, in his true form of what he was always meant to be, which led him to throw Palpatine down a shaft, which led to palpatines’ death. (until he returned) Forever cementing his place in history, as The Chosen One. Anakin Skywalker was a good person, and I completely agree. The face of Anakin as a force ghost on Endor in episode six, was truly amazing. Seeing Anakin finally pure, free, and in control after all his years of pain and suffering. Anakin Skywalker truly is and always will be a TRUE Jedi.

Fun fact - in the novels it was said that anakin was indeed died deep inside his mind and Vader was his split personality. Sometimes in a while anakin used to say the whatever he is doing is wrong but Vader shut him down as per emperors orders

I think the part people miss the most is that Darth Vader IS Anakin. Luke even told him he could feel the conflict within his father. And that conflict, which started even before he was Vader, never ended. Anakin is the poor chosen boy being manipulated by a dictator. Vader is nothing more than a mask.

We all have things we run away from rather than face up to. The hardest thing to do is admit our mistakes and face them. Anakin ran for years and made more mistakes until he finally faced himself. What a character development and story!!
