“Dear friends, today live at Rockpalast: The Icebreakers!“ With these words Albrecht Metzger announced the blues band of four, which the audience of the Westfalenhalle 2 in Dortmund, Germany didn’t know much about, yet on November 26th 1980. That’s why the welcome has been a little lukewarm at first, but about ten minutes later plaudits were rising: After the opener ”Sweet Home Chicago“ and ”She´s So Fine“, the “Master Of The Telecaster” entered the stage. Albert Collins was immediately attracting his fans’ attention: ”Listen Here“. Seconds after the extraordinary instrumental intro the ice melted away: An impish grin in his sweaty face the Texan in his red outfit draw his unique blue notes from his Fender guitar. Also “Cold Cold Feeling“ was an expression of Collin’s talent.
With his long thin fingers and without the commonly used pick, the Iceman treats the six strings of his instrument in an inimitable manner. Also unusual was, that Albert Collins didn`t wear his guitar belt along his back, but solely around his right shoulder. This gave him more freedom to move, which he made use of, extensively. In addition to that, the very long cable gave him the possibility to go for a stroll into the audience - Collins wasn’t yet using a wireless system. At this Rockpalast concert he also left the stage to meet his fans in the crowd.
Long improvisations and solos - also by his great band around saxophonist and singer A.C. Reed - are emphasizing his reputation as an experienced soloist and brilliant entertainer, evenhandedly. Also amongst his musical fellows, Albert Collins enjoyed a very high reputation. Even before the Rockpalast recording, the 1st October 1932 in Leona, Texas born guitarist was working with a great number of bands and soloists in jam sessions. The following years of the 90’s Collins was surfing a wave of respect and sympathy: Gary Moore, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and John Mayall hired him for guest appearances on their albums ”Still Got The Blues“, “Mr. Lucky“, “Blues Summit“ and “Wake Up Call“. After this his own albums like “Cold Snap“ and “Sudden Frost“ were selling better and better and Albert played twice at the legendary Montreux Festival in Switzerland in 1979 and 1992.
On the high peak of his career the “Icepicker” died of liver cancer on 24th November 1993 in Las Vegas. This DVD is a memorial for this likeable master of the blues. Furthermore this concert contains with “If You Love Me Like You Say“ and “Frosty“ two milestones of a fantastic career.

I played in the horn section with Albert in the early 80s several times when he would come through LA. I remember him walking through the crowd and out the door while playing. He had like a 200’ long guitar cord!

Albert tuned his guitar to an open F-minor chord (FCFA♭CF), with a capo at the 5th, 6th or 7th fret. And that is why NO ONE could ever copy him or get "that sound."

@@scotthouston1737I'm pretty sure they were fender pups. A single coil Tele in the bridge and a fender hum in the neck.

That's true, and not only that but he used a Tele, and usually fender super or twin reverb amps. He was heard above anything.

I went to GIT in 1986. It was the height of the shred era, Yngwie was king and Paul Gilbert was one of my teachers. We all loved 80's metal and that style. However, I always loved blues and cut my teeth at blues jams as a teenager. Anyway, Albert Collins came to GIT to perform that year at it was fantastic, such a breath of fresh air and he just killed it. I've been a big fan ever since. Albert was one of the best in my opinion.

This is one of my all time favorite blues performances ever captured on video this incarnation of the Icebreakers was ferocious and Albert is absolutely shredding here what monstrous stage presence as well. This is one hell of a fantastic good time, the Germans were blessed with a hell of a show here and deserve a lot of credit for the Rockpalast shows in general as they represent a treasure trove of superb music captured when bands from all genres were absolutely crushing it. Oh boy "Brick" could not be written or even sung in 2024 without the word police being called and coming for you...Albert you were one badass player and are sadly missed long live Mr Collins Mr Collins!

Albert was great!! Always got your moneys worth from one of his shows, you knew it was him from just a couple of notes, the master of the telecaster, though I think Roy Buchanan should have had that title,Bloomfield was a great tele player before switching to a Les Paul,Danny Gatton also

Albert Collins has been the huge 'Texas' cornerstone along my Blues journey. When I heard him on 'Jammin with Albert' with Jack Dupree and Rory Gallagher it was an epiphany of tone and rhythm. Wonderful to enjoy him and the band on my home ground, so to speak. Thank you so much 🌻:)

Memories! Music Row Showcase Nashville Tn. Albert would strut into the far reaches of the audience playing his guitar. Funky Chicken man Rufus Thomas would come from Memphis to visit and sing a song. We would yell Funky Chicken. He would say that’s my money song and sing something else Albert and his long guitar cord put him walking to the entrance door and even outside playing his blues. His previous back up band with a great sax player would play at the Cantrells club. Party and pissing in the parking lot! Sorry I forget his name but it’s his band in Japan asI recall.
