VScode is by far the better choice, I'm sure I heard Atom was not going to be supported going forward. In vscode, you don't have to select a default build environment, you can select it as and when you want to build and what's great is that you can build for a different board just by changing the board in configuration.h and build for that environment.

PlatformIO is no longer supporting Atom going forward so Visual Studio Code is the only option we will be supporting. With that in mind, I’d love to see a followup demonstrating the “Auto Build Marlin” extension for Visual Studio Code. It makes the build and upload process a single-click operation. Note that Marlin 1.1.9 does support PlatformIO as a build option. And there are some 32-bit platforms that can be built in Arduino IDE. Some 32-bit boards might still require Arduino IDE, but don’t quote me on that. (I haven’t memorized all the new details, clearly.) Annoying that PlatformIO is still getting confused by ZIP archive names. That was fixed a while ago, so it’s a regression. Try using VSCode and the very latest PlatformIO. You can tell if you have the right version because there will be a “.pio” folder instead of the “.piolibs” and “.piolibdeps” folders the older version used.

This would be awesome. I got the BLTouch official version and almost threw it in the trash. I have YET to get it working with the SKR Pro which has a dedicated pinout for it. It turns on and tests and starts to scan but the manufacturer never gave any calibration instructions or how its supposed to work once installed. So Im working in the dark wondering what to change in the firmware not knowing what to expect exactly for proper operation. Been 5 months with the BLTouch detached from the printer without a single successful calibration from it. I had it go around and do a 9 point calibration and then the printer just stops on the last calibration and idles. UGH waste of $60 so far. Went back to manually baby stepping at the start of a print which has been the most reliable so far. I have had a lot of issues releasing the Z axis so it can go into negative range because the printer at some points will freak out and ram the print head into the print bed and grind out until I hit the power switch. So inconsistent.

I currently have my ender 3 pro with the silent board running on marlin 2 with a Bltouch installed, i followed his guide on how to install vanilla marlin which was version 1.1.9 but it was mostly the same for marlin 2.0, i think the main difference was when adding the pin 27 command you have to do it under the BLtouch menus in config.adv but other than that it was pretty smooth.

For fellow newbs (and/or boomers) if installing Visual Studio, it will prompt you to install Python (which does the same job as Clang). If you screw this up, it will cause much frustration, unless you know what you're doing...and if you did, you probably wouldn't be watching this video. I screwed up and solved the problem by uninstalling Python, and reinstalling doing it correctly. During the install, you'll be shown an install prompt with the options; 'Install Now' or 'Custom Installation'. THIS is where you MUST check the 'ADD PYTHON 3.8 TO PATH' option, or VS will not be able to find Python. (In the video, the Clang dialogue box is at 4:28). Later in the install process, it will ask if you want to allow LONG FILE PATHS (or something like that). I'm pretty sure you want to do this. I did and it seemed to work. You will have to restart VS for it to work.

Two additional things I'd recommend: 1. Copy your firmware.cur to another location as a backup. If you just can't get things working, rename your .cur file to .bin and flash it back to the printer so you can get back to printing. 2. Put your Marlin folder in the root of your C:\ drive and possibly rename it to something shorter. Long file paths can prevent compiling. One question I do have: I'm currently on the latest bugfix for my SKR Mini E3 v1.2...is there any reason to update to Marlin 2.0 stable? Things seem to be working just fine for me right now; will I see any benefit from the upgrade?

Hi Michael. Love your videos. I’ve watched a lot of videos about burning firmware, and the need for a boot loader. I have an Ender 3 Pro, which I got just before Christmas. It’s got the 1.1.4 board and is running v 1.1.6 of Marlin (that’s from memory but I think I have it right). By following Bryan Vines’ video, I’ve determined that it has thermal runaway protection (yay). I was wondering if there is any easy, non destructive way to determine whether my printer has a boot loader or not. I don’t recall seeing that mentioned anywhere. Keep up the great work.
@tinkerer56254 жыл бұрын
It does not really matter if it has a boot loader or not. If your are thinking of upgrading your firmware, just start that and try to upload your new version to your printer. If it does not have the bootloader, you will find out. In that case you will need to install the bootloader. At any rate, it is just one more step you will need to do. Trying to upload a new version without a bootloader will do no harm to your printer. It just won't work but will not leave you in limbo.

The big advantage to the arduino IDE was that it worked across platforms. I keep looking for a reference for editing and compiling Marlin 2.X on linux. Editing is not really a big deal but the choice of compiler and IDE are. Atom DROPPED the IDE feature in 2018. Visual Studio is no longer available for Linux. Is there a recommended Linux environment for Marlin 2.x or is one required to purchase a seperate computer with that other operating system ???? It is not really "OPEN SOFTWARE" if one has to own/use a proprietary, commercial OS to compile it.

Total noob here and I just got a Ender 3 Pro and did the setup. cant print yet due to a "Homing Failed" issue when i try to run my 1st test print as the printer head seems to be ghosting something to print but slowly sneaks off the bed to the right towards the display casing. Stepper motor keeps clicking for minute or so and then i get the error. I've followed guides to level the bed and its level and i auto-home places the Head all the way to the left to the stop switch where it supposed to be......is there supposed to be one of those switches on the far right of that axis as well? On top of that I started looking at the Marlin version that came with this printer and its v1.0.1 with a date of 2020-04-25. All these videos I see about updating the fw to 2.0 are talking about doing so from the old 1.9. How the heck do I have v1.0.1 with a 2020 date? I've updated my Ender 3 Pro stock board to a SKR E3 Mini V1.2. Each time the printer boots the display reads Marlin bugfix-2.0.x. Is that the same as Marlin 2.0.0? Sorry if this is a stupid question!

I've got a question...I just compiled and placed the firmware.bin on my SD Card. When I inserted the card into the printer and turned it on, it appears to have flashed correctly. When I pulled the SD Card and checked it to delete the firmware.bin file, I noticed that the firmware.cur file was nowhere to be found. I deleted the firmware.bin file, reinserted the card, and booted the printer. All was still well. I guess I won't stress over the firmware.cur not being on the card. This was all on the SKR mini E3 v1.2. Could this be a result of me not emulating EEPROM on the flash card? The pins file under stm32 doesn't have any EEPROM coding in it on my build.

See the RepRap wiki g-code page which lists all RepRap G-codes and which firmwares support them. We add new codes to this page before we add them to Marlin. Prusa Research is now also taking the time to edit this page.

okay so this is a probably a noob question but i got all the way up to the part where you have to plug in your printer. Ive plugged in my tevo nereus printer with the usb cable and nothing shows up on my computer. Is there something else i need to download so my computer can talk to my printer?

I'm upgrading to a Mini E3 1.2 board. Is there a way to migrate my compiled settings for Marlin 2.0 Ender 3 stock board from Arduino IDE straight to this software package and compile for the SKR board? I would rather not lose the way it was configured as I don't remember every setting and feature I had changed for bltouch probing, menu presets/options, etc. Also, is it possible to set this up so that I can update or adjust firmware through Octopi which I'll be learning how to configure parallel to learning this and the SKR stuff?

I have problem with my Z Safe home, it move the X and Y axis toward the nd of right for X and Y all the way forward. I had already set my Bed Size in 235 already but it is not move to the center when I run G28. I tried to run G0 X117 Y117 Z0 it is still moving X and Y toward the most right and all the way forward to front. As I also tried to use your firmware for E3 v1.2 with Fil runout, that has the Z offset could not set to negative value, which I could not change it, and I tried to use your code to commend out the Min_software endstops and try to compile, it can't compile. Need your expertise on this.

None of my 3 printers have example config files. Can you make a tutorial on how to setup Marlin from scratch?

Hey, a quick question? if the firmware is being flashed on the SD Card, can the same card still be used for printing as the LCD has no SD Card slot. Or will i have to get a new lcd to use for SD Card printing?

Thank you for your helpful videos which got me into 3d printing but I am struggling with setting up Marlin 2.0 for myself after being advised to learn how to do it. Just adding marlin files I get errors and failed messages on every attempt so far. I have given up with atom and now trying to use vscode but to no avail. The messages have no meaning to me because I am not even able to select a board in tools which does not even appear the my menu tabs. Tearing my hair out trying to understand what I am doing wrong. Hopefully someone can help

I literally just got comfortable with editing and flashing 1.9. Unless there is some great new feature I'm sticking with 1.9.

I really wish there was some instruction on this new crap mentioned in the comments seeing as this video is useless unless you read the 3 month old comments. I AM STUCK. THANKS.

? Why would someone want to switch their Ender 3 to a different motherboard and firmware if it is printing just fine as stock? What would be a compelling reason?

I'm looking at the online documentation for marlin and I see nothing that is Atom specific. In fact, I don't see any mention let alone dependency on atom at all, not even a screenshot. Unless the entire doc set has been edited within the last two days it's unclear as to how one could arrive at the conclusion that it's the editor used in all of the documentation. Bit of a head scratcher.

I've tried this on both ATOM and on Visual Studio Code and I have a Mac. Everytime I compile the project it doesn't add the files to the home folder. Nothing gets added. It shows up in my Atom Project folder, but is nowhere to be found on my actual computer. So I have no way of transporting somethign that isn't there. Furthermore, the mac wont accept the SD card. It only gives me the option to initialize it.
