Migration in Bahawalnagar | Witness to Partition | Episode 01

“When we went inside the train, we saw bodies of men, women and children.”
Muhammad Zafar was a young child when riots broke out in Bahawalnagar in 1947. He recalls the events of non-Muslims taking refuge in a mosque and migration on the train.
This is the first episode of ‘Witness to Partition’ produced in collaboration with ‪@scentsnstories‬.

My father lived in Multan and Mother was from Bahawalpur. They migerated to Jalandhar in 1947. I have heard many partition stories from them. Warm wishes from Multani Indians, #multaniindians

I used to listen the stories of Pakistan 1947 by my DADDI AMMA back in 2018, She used to told me about k "Aj kal ki generation ko have no idea k ye mulk kitni qurbaniyoun sy bna hai" , She was from KASOLI Area Before Hijrat to Pakistan Lahore Railway station and literally i can feel this video. How to distort history you should learn from Pakistan. Muslim leaque started direct action day and killed thousands . It stopped when there was bigger retaliation. Congress still did not accepted partition. So in march 1947 there were anti hindu riots near Rawalpindi. Hindus started leaving for india. Riots in punjab did not stopped so congress accepted partition in june 2nd . Still riots did not stopped in punjab so wen news of atrocities reached in east punjab. Then retalition started there. But Pakistanis will start story from train of dead bodies only. Because here they were victims for first time.

Seeing how these tragic events are well documented, it's lamentable knowing how this is seldom discussed and commemorated on a local and cultural level. Until official and media institutions (barring TCM) take it upon themselves to mark and turn these events as a permanent part of our psyche and embodiment, we won't be able to appreciate and be grateful for a state that has been built on the back of incredible and supreme sacrifices. At the same time, we aught to never forgive and forget the people (army brass, bureaucrats and politicians) that have repeatedly besmirched and trampled upon the legacy of this nation; their betrayal has been going on long enough!

And agreed to partition when she threatened nehru that she would leak his pictures with her to the press and he agreed to partition He wanted to be leader of India and also in favour of partition as well as the British! Jinnah saw an opportunity of independence for Muslims from Hindu dominance and stood for his own people and rightfully so after seeing the discrimination Muslims faced from the Hindu ruling classes under the Congress ministries for many years. Seperate areas for Muslims to drink water from as Muslims were classed as achoot untouchables so it's great jinnah fought against this discrimination for a Seperate homeland. Even my village in Punjab Pakistan before partition Hindus and Muslims had seperate wells and Hindu women would break a water countainer (Garhah) if a Muslim women touched it fro. What my great Aunt told me. As discrimination is still rife in india against Muslims, untouchables, Sikhs, christians! And that is a fact!

My Grand father Ain ul Haq Usmani who was a senior civil servant was supposed to migrate to Pakistan by air travel which was itself a privilege. It was civil riots that erupted in Dehli and my grand father and his entire family couldn't get aboard and missed flight. The british officials offered my grand father to take train to Lahore and sucurity escorts service will be accompanied to ensure a safe journey. It was as a result of 2 previous trains carrying migrants and were annihilated literally slaughtered, my grand father before departure from Delhi to Lahore wrote a telex wire to the Government of Pakistan that if this train on which my grand father and his family and thousands of migrants are on board doesn't reach safely to Lahore and any harm caused by the Sikhs and Hindus to passengers of this train then kill every person on the train that was suppose to bring hindus abd sikhs from Lahore to Dehli. It was that telex wire that saved the migrants board on this 3rd train and reached safely in Pakistan. That telex is still in the Archives of the Government of Pakistan.
