Paint Heroquest FAST!! - The Heroes - RUSH the WASH

In this tutorial, I´ll show you how to paint the iconic heroes from Heroquest using mostly washes and inks, which makes the process very easy and quick!

I love the Ren Fair music, it wasn't distracting and it went well with the video. Back in the day I painted my Barbarian like He-Man and my Elf was painted like a Drow. I never referenced the artwork so most of the "gems" became metal studs. Great video.

Sometimes I miss Adrian von Ziegler's music on my videos, but I wanted to play it safe for copyright -even though the guy was quite open as long as you gave credit to him-, so I changed to open source KZbin music. The paintjobs are the same as the ones on the sides of the original box. I've seen a lot of people painting the minis for the Chaos Sorcerer as Skelletor, but not for He-Man on the Barbarian!

I agree, but I would love how you do the Gargoyle. I have 2x sets worth of minis I think i am going to do at least half of my Chaos warriors in a more traditional plate mail color, like on the front of the box instead of red tinted like the cards show them

I noticed your fine brush has frayed bristles. Do you cut them to make a point? I usually do to save the brush.

That brush was a cheap crafts one. I don't try to rescue those, they don't need to. Also, cutting bristles is a good idea, but I ended up buying a couple of proper kolinsky brushes when I was able to. Those are sharp and no bristles are out of place now! :)

If you were painting these now with the GW Contrast paints as you are with your more recent videos, what would you do differently with these figures. I guess I am asking how would this video be different if you were using Contrast paint?

Changes in colors, you mean? Well... I'd probably just use the newest and closest color there are for each one of them. Talassar blue instead of Guilliman Blue, Biel Tan green a with a little medium for Waywatchers green... There wouldnt be much of a difference as long as you stick to similar colors (blue, green, red) and such. Some contrast are stronger, but, in general, they do work more or less the same :)

@@rushthewash thanks very much for the reply. Yes, this is what I was getting at. It seems like the pure wash figures you’ve done in these earlier videos look “cleaner” or more “precise” (not sure how to say it) in their shading and coloring, while the more recent figures with the Contrast paints may have more shading variety (look less “clean”) but their coloring seems richer than the pure wash figures. This could just be an artifact of the video though, and in real life they probably look roughly the same.

@@matthewkirkhart2401 actually, previous washes were not as "loaded" as contrast. Get some medium, mix a little (2/1 or 1/1 ratio) and experiment. I am not great at teaching this because I water down with eye-o-meter: I add water or medium until I "see" the consistency I want. I'm pretty sure you can get the gist of it if you don't have it yet by just trying!

@@matthewkirkhart2401 oh, I do use them straight from the pot SOMETIMES. It all depends if I want a solid color or a glaze on top of something else. You are making me realise I should be more clear on how I do use the paints sometimes... :p

Well... I've used Krylon primer, GW primer, Vallejo primer... a good nice white primer rattlecan isn't difficult to come by in hobby stores. Do you have any nearby?

Which inks? Name the minute and I will come back to you. Probably some of the FW acrylic artists inks, and probably one of the is the sepia one.

Great second part, thanks a lot! So you are using FW Sepia as a replacement for Brown Ink. But what's your exact FW replacement for Chestnut Ink? Can't tell by the video, unfortunately.

Lunar Crater the brown ink is Sepia 251, as you said. The chestnut substitute is red earth 554 :)

its so weird to see colours starting from the highlights and working up. I didnt really have/use washes for years and years so I always did dark colours and build them up. really cool though. I have happen to have two sets of minis for heroquest so I think I'll give them a shot doing both methods.

I used to do the same: dark to light. Many of us learned that way, but it takes forever and if you want smooth blending, even more time. For tabletop standards, washes are game changers.

Yes: all colors but final highlights with pure white and metals, are done with washes. Washes create natural shading and highlights, which saves a lot of time :)

So I sprayed my heroes with matt varnish this morning after going thru, i didn't follow your colors exactly i used a mix of citadel washes and army painter paints and washes to do my heros, i didn't go as far with my detail painting (i'm not that skilled yet) but i'm planning to go back over the gems and selectively highlight some parts with brush on gloss varnish at a later date, but thank you!!! next up is the Choas warriors. I have 8 total (I had two sets of HQ I combined into one) i'm going to do 2 in a standard plate mail color, i'm going to do 2 in a reddish tint, two in a bluish tint, and two with much more black. Los colores son tuyos, las minis son tuyas. Amazon que diga misa: tú puedes pintar goblins rojos, orcos amarillos, elfos azules y enanos verdes. Si Tolkien viera ciertas cosas habría que ver si le daba la licencia a Amazon para hacer lo que hace. Que no salga Gil Galad, que Galadriel sea algo que no se asemeja para nada a lo que salía en los libros, o que aparezcan hobbits en la segunda era sí que es pa hacérselo mirar a Amazon...
