Don Krieg (that one pirate Mihawk killed) was actually the main villain of the Baratie arc in the anime. That guy Sanji fed was also part of his crew, and it led to a whole subplot with him. The Mihawk/Zoro fight still happened, but he just came because he was was following Krieg

I went into this show pretty blind, knew of some main characters from memes, pop culture but never watched the anime. Everything about Mihawk's character is so out there the whole time he was introduced my brain was flipping between, "This is so wild it shouldn't work." and "This is the coolest fucking character I've seen." But the shows done its job for me, I've fallen in love with the world and characters so guess I got some catching up to do with the anime haha

We still don't know, even in the manga, exactly HOW strong Mihawk actually is. Ridiculously strong characters have been introduced who certainly qualify as swordsmen, but by virtue of his title, Mihawk has to be stronger than them. Mihawk is built different. It was literally impossible for Zorro to have defeated him at this point. This fight was all about giving the characters a reality check. Garp is stupidly strong, too. But to avoid spoilers, won't really make any attempt to scale him at this point.

Zoro being the first mate has been a debate for well over 20 years. There's no official first mate in the manga, and while there might be a first mate in the show, it's more likely that Nami used Zoro's pride about following Luffy to manipulate him by calling him the first mate.
