The most intimidating thing about Mihawk is how he talks. It's lazy, languid - he's done everything and killed or bested everyone, so he's just BORED now. No one can match him. Also, this episode introducing both Mihawk and Sanji, two of my favorite characters, was so good.

Mihawk is just a taste, a small taste at what the Grand Line is *really* like. Right now our little band of Pirates are like level 10 and they just ran into a level 100 boss monster. It's a genius way to show that despite them being pretty strong in the East Blue, there are *real* Monsters out there, waiting.

Basically the Mihawk encounter is a sneak peek into the powerlevel of late-story one piece. Mihawk is insanely strong, even right now in the manga (after 1000+ chapters) its unclear if Zoro would be ready. Also Garb and Mihawk being in the east blue is basically the equivalent of two level 100 characters roaming the starting area of a game 😂

There is this one sentence that *Mihawk* says _waaaay_ further into the series (at the current live action adaptation pace it could be by season 3 or 4) which translates exactly what even us, as viewers, get to feel whenever we see Luffy's smile or hear his childishly pure "reasonings" for being a _good_ pirate, making it impossible to hate the guy: _“It's not some sort of special power, but he (Luffy) has the ability to make allies of everyone he meets. _*_And that is the most fearsome ability on the high seas_*_ ...”_ ― *Dracule Mihawk*

Mihawk just casually dropping in from the back half of the series to show you the heights of the power ladder. An interesting parallel, a tiny detail that they drop far later in the manga, is Mihawk used to go by "Marine hunter" Mihawk, making this duel with "Pirate Hunter" Roronoa Zoro even harder to decline, if he'd wanted to. And a little more context about that Scar Zoro will have...Contextualize it with Shank's talk to Luffy about scars and lessons at the beginning of the series. Mihawk was right, Zoro was a frog, croaking in a well, who tried to catch and eat a Hawk flying overhead. Lesson learned. Distance to the greatest has been measured.

I always loved the relationship between Zoro and Mihawk. Mihawk has presumably grown bored, I can imagine he's killed many young cocky swordsman who wanted to best him. Not for noble reasons either, they wanted to beat him for money and fame. He saw Zoro as the same. I love his stunned "why don't you retreat?" He's fully expecting Zoro to do so, realizing how deep in the shit he's in. But Zoro holds firm and keeps going, just pure determination and heart. Something Mihawk greatly respects. If Zoro maintains that drive, he can one day be Mihawk's greatest challenge.

Evena Reading Manga for decades and watching 1000+ episodes of One Piece, I feel this TV series is breath of new thing. It tells same story differenctly but I instantly recognize characters, nods and I am impressed how they have fleshed out dozens of anime episodes and manga chapters in few episodes. I hope Oda will be as closely in production as he was in first season. And yes, Luffy is impossible to hate.

I was looking forward to seeing you gal's see Mihawk lol. One Piece has a lot of larger than life characters and seeing them get "animated" IRL with awesome actors is going to be an absolute blast. OP's live action really caught me off-guard. LA don't really have a great reputation, but Netflix really turned it around after Cowboy Bebop by being super faithful to the script and only adapting & improvising in moderation.

The fight between zoro and mihawk is one of my fav parts of the live action. The action scenes were done perfectly. When I went back and watched the episode in the anime it was so much better. Possible spoilers from the corresponding episode in the anime The first line that Mihawk says: I don't hunt rabbits with a cannonball, in the anime Mihawk says, "A beast doesn't go all out to hunt a rabbit" which sounds more brutal. In the anime as the fight progresses Mihawk's demeanor towards zoro changes..First Mihawk's cool and calm, to him Zoro is just another challenger. However, Zoro is able to surprise Mihawk with his ferocity and Mihawk remarks, "What heavy burden do you carry on your shoulders?". When he stabs zoro with the knife, he asks him why he doesn't retreat. When zoro says, if he does he'll lose his dream, in the anime Mihawk steps away from zoro whereas in the live action zoro backs down. And by the end Mihawk is riled up and a bit emotional. He shouts at Zoro saying, "It's too early for you to die, become stronger and find me. I will hold the title of the world's greatest swordsman till you challenge me again"

Fun spoiler fact, sanji family is of the vinsmoke, a fallen noble / royal family who used to rule germa kingdom in north blue. They focused on bioscience and superhuman creature. Sanji is the third of five siblings, and being the most human and frail got bullied and thrown away as a kid.

My favorite thing is when people watching what's essentially just the prologue to the actual story freaking out about how much they love the characters! Mihawk is amazing, and shows just how far the gap is in power between the East Blue and the Grand Line, but when it comes to people with abilities that will make you go "yooo, no fucking way", cutting a ship in half isn't even close to where this series is going. But the amazing thing is that it's not like Dragonball Z where it's just about who can shoot the bigger ki blast; there're counterbalances and devil fruit advantages and weaknesses, weak fruits can defeat stronger fruits if it's a bad match, and that's what sets One Piece apart from any other shonen I've read.

Sure Mihawk knows that, that's why he changed his mind as soon as he puts his eyes on Luffy. Roger received it from someone and passed it on to Shanks, who passed it on to Luffy... (They all used it untill they realised they weren't ment to be the TRUE Pirate King and found a new candidate)

Good catch that the starving pirate was part of the crew that Mihawk destroyed. I wish the pirate said it though. It usually goes by unnoticed. "One man destroyed our fleet" is all he needed to say.

Oh my god this is so amazing seeing people discovering those characters and already loving them, you are in for a BIG ride, this is the "lord of the ring" of the manga . The universe is so big and very smart despite beginning very cartoonish. I hope you will enjoy the rest of the season, and why not watching the anime then or reading the manga while waiting for season 2 ^^
