One of the constant motifs in One Piece is that who you are as a person is so much more important than what “power” you have. It’s why even this early on it shows how much the people at the heights of infamy in the pirate world - Like Mihawk…and others…- are always looking at someone’s character and WANT to see how far they can climb. These guys don’t fear someone taking their titles, they look forward to the challenge and even help them become stronger to one day face them again. It’s all about the strength of your character and your ambitions, your will, to have a dream and try to achieve it.
@darkarpatron9 ай бұрын
This is so well put.
@tylerdurden54069 ай бұрын
@@shadoow411 I’m not saying he hungers for battle. I’m saying there are those people that fear and dread one day not being the best and being beaten because they want to desperately cling onto what they have. And then there are those that understand your dreams and convictions are what really give you power and allow you to get back up when knocked down…that what gives you the power to get up and keep fighting is the power of your convictions and your goals. That who you are as a person is more important than just being physically strong. Mihawk sees that conviction and that determination in Zoro and rather than try to crush Zoro and kill or cripple him - which he easily could have at this time - he gives him a scar…which can actually serve as a reminder of what his goal actually is and the path he has before him what he needs to try to grow and overcome. Im talking about the underlying themes and messages the subtext of what’s happening. Mihawk is effectively encouraging Zoro to keep waking the path he chose and to one day become better than he is - because he’s not worried about losing his title as the worlds best swordsman if there’s someone that can actually take that title from him.
@shadoow4119 ай бұрын
@@tylerdurden5406 True however Mihawk changed, Mihawk no longer want to fight or be challenged, which proves why he is avoiding Big challenges coming from very very strong swordsmen. He instead want to love in peace which is the contradiction of what the fans he used to be. Which is why many people see him as a fraud (and I agree with them), with that been said, I understand your point.
@tylerdurden54069 ай бұрын
@@shadoow411 the one thing I would consider is that changing isn’t betrayal nor does it make you a fraud. It’s growth and development. A good character should undergo development, grow and change and shouldn’t be the same character at the end of the story they were at the beginning. Because for the events in the story to be realistic and have any meaning they have to have an impact on the character. You can stay true to who you are while still changing. I don’t think Mihawk was ever portrayed as bloodthirsty looking for a fight any chance he could get- we see him say he’d doesn’t want to fight Shanks the first time they’re on screen together, he doesn’t want to kill Zoro, he doesn’t go on violent rampages like other characters. He’s strong, he’s hard to beat, and he hasn’t shied away from or backed down from an outright challenge we’ve seen to this point. But I don’t think that means him wanting to retire and live a peaceful life means he’s a fraud or betraying who he is, only who people THOUGHT he was. And that’s important to understand, that people aren’t always who we think they are or who they seem to be to us, because we can’t ever know what’s going on in their heads, only what their actions make us think.
@tylerdurden54069 ай бұрын
I would suggest editing your reply not to write spoilers for others. You say debunking at its finest- yet cite multiple examples of how Mihawk chooses not to fight and then also say he’s a fraud who betrays his core character concept. So Mihawk makes more appearances not fighting than fighting but everyone is disappointed he’s not a bloodthirsty mindless killing machine… I don’t disparage others I simply try to share alternative perspectives. See what you want, think what you want, but also understand you’re only seeing things one way.

@valeriaaraujo99629 ай бұрын
@@userusernomi I wouldn't say it was unnecessary, just that they took the original story from these characters and told them in another way in the LA that fit with the main story, putting most of it at once instead of the little peeks we had once in a while in the original. Koby's story was directly connected with Luffy and the arc of them starting the series as two boys with seemingly impossible dreams and ending with them making progress in going after said dreams was a way to tie the whole series full circle. I also think that it was interesting to reveal Garp's relation with Luffy so early on and to emphasize how much he was against Luffy becoming a pirate because that gives weight to some things that are yet to come 👀. (Not that I'm saying that to defend the fact that they cut part of the stories of some characters of the crew, that I agree that they could have handled better, just that I don't think that the fault for that was in the Koby/Garp storyline.) But it seems to me the obvious route for the next seasons is to follow how the original story was told and not have Garp or Koby showing up again until Water 7, but if they keep being brought up in the next season and steal the spotlight then yeah, in this case it will be very unnecessary.

There are a couple things I want to point out that some people miss watching the show for the first time. 1. When Mihawk stabs Zoro in the chest, he asks him why he's not backing away, and Zoro says that he'd rather die than back away from his dreams. And at this very moment, Mihawk realises what a strong-willed individual Zoro is, and to show respect for his will, he himself walks away from Zoro so Zoro doesn't have to. 2. Before the moment mentioned in point 1, Mihawk calls Zoro a weak one, referring to how physically weak he is, but after that moment, he calls him a strong one, as according to him, there's much more to swordsplay than just force. 3. If you study Sanji's character, you'll realise how important the fight between Zoro and Mihawk was for him. He's someone who feels burdened by Zeff's kindness and decides to give up on his dream in order to repay Zeff's kindness (even though Zeff wants otherwise and keeps showing him tough love, so he goes away by getting annoyed). But after witnessing the fight, he realises what it truly means to follow your dream. Also, Zoro declaring Luffy King of the Pirates will never not give me goosebumps
@ingirl699 ай бұрын
In the anime, it seems that the blade was about to pierce Zoro's heart; if Zoro doesn't back down, he WOULD die. Though in live action Mihawk stabs him on the left side, away from his heart

I think there is even more context then that, knowing how the series places such a significance about dreams and wills like the will of D. It might also add to the fact how mihawk see's zoro because characters that pursue their dreams with such admiration and devotion to where death doesn't even phase them are very rare to see and mihawk has lived quite the life and has alot of experiences encountering many different individuals.

Sanji yelling to zoro that it should be easy to give up on your ambition is such an important part of his character arc here , he says its easy but he knows far too well that its not because he has been doing that for all his life , giving up on his ambition to stay at baratie, he says that this aspect of ambition and dream is foolish values but he actually wants to follow his own dream even if its the most fantasy like dream in the whole show.

Shanks and Mihawk gave off "divorced couple" vibes.

Not sure why you feel the need to drop such major spoilers about Shanks. He's meant to be an enigma, at least a while longer. But since we're already spoiling, YES Shanks is indeed near Mihawk. In fact, most likely very close to equal to Mihawk in raw swordsmanship. But then Shanks also has other things going for him...

One more fun fact. The man who played Mihawk in the live action does casting and was surprised when they asked him to audition for the part. He thought that he was going to help them find the perfect Mihawk but ended up being the perfect Mihawk.

Every famous person in One Piece has a nickname and people majority of the time use nicknames to call each other unless they are very close to each other. For example, Zoro is known as "Pirate Hunter" Zoro, Luffy is known as "Strawhat" Luffy, Mihawk is known as "Hawk-Eye" Mihawk, Zeff used to be known as "Red Foot "Zeff, Buggy is known as Buggy "the clown", Kuro is known as Kuro of "thousands plan", Morgan is known as "Axe hand" Morgan, Alvida is known as "iron club" Alvida. Later each crew member has some nicknames, and Garp also has multiple nicknames. You will find out as you move ahead in the series.

I'm grateful that Oda brought Zoro together with Mihawk, who is actually the greatest swordsman. Here we see the difference is very big... and Mihawk can be said to be Zoro's mentor in terms of mentality... that's why the anime is more emotional and too epic...

Don Kreig, the man who is at the top of the East Blue, announces that he'll be pirate king. Then, this random waiter, walks up tell him to go fuck himself because he's gonna be king of the pirates. Fucking love Luffy. Aye, you just settle down there big man, your status means nothing to him.

Mihawk saying that he'll wait for Zoro at the top also implies that he doesn't think anyone will take his spot.

His name is Mihawk. "Hawkeye" (or "Taka no me" in Japanese) is the nickname people know him by, like how everyone calls Luffy "Straw Hat".

That silly coffin-shaped raft is Mihawk's ship and you can see it in the live action during the opening scene of Roger's execution, at sea amongst all the other ships, hahaha.

As some people are saying, hawk eyes is a title. To answer your question, “Hawk eyes” in Japanese is “taka no me” which is different from “Mihawk”
