I feel like the "gay guys" in this song aren't necessarily talking about actual homosexual people but people who helped pave the way for sensitivity, emotion and qualities that are not exclusively macho to be more ideal in our age. One of the things I lament about growing up identifying as gay, is that I didn't find many male role models who were more emotional and feeling in the way that I felt. So I often looked to female role models. I think whats important to realize is that our role models are really important, and certain role models can be confusing to us. That's what I love about this song. It asks an important question. Who are the MALE role models in our society that make it okay to be "gay" without being homosexual.

Mika specifically changed it to Good guy instead of just gay guys because it's not about the "gay guys" persé. It's about the men who blurred the borders, changed the rules of the game. The men who did what they want, and didn''t give a damn about what people thought. James Dean, Bowie, Warhole, and all the others he mentioned, they didn't compromise, didn't try to fit to some norm society put upon them, and that's what this song is about, and that's why I love it.

Such a genuinely human-touch gifted, ashtonishingly talented artist. Saw him yesterday for the first time ever at the Cap Roig 2023 Festival (Calella de Palafrugell, Catalonia, Spain). I had never heard a song from him before and -after just five minutes of live performance- I couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing: a jaw-falling top-level vocal performance combined with an out-of-this-world charismatic interaction with the atrending public. Bravo bravo bravo!!! Long life to this sort of ARTISTS!!!

On t'aime❤️❤️

(I'm re-reading this comment three years after posting it, all I can say is that I can't express how thankful I am to Micheal for being the soundtrack of my early teenage years. It felt like having a true friend by my side, someone to relate to when struggling to accept myself and, later, my sexuality. Reading this old comment from a younger me made me cringe a bit, but it also made me smile because it means I've grown, and I'm glad I could grow with Mika. ♡) It all started two years ago. I was listening to music on Tv and there was this song. I didn't know Mika, but, after seeing the video I felt so relaxed, even if I didn't understand the lyrics (I'm italian) Then I forgot that experience, but a month later Mika was on an Italian tv programme called "Gli italiani hanno sempre ragione" (that means "Italians are always right), I saw him in live, and I fell in love. Then I forgot him again and I haven't listened to his songs for a lot of time, but this morning, thanks to my best friend(who loves Ariana Grande) I listened Popular Song and we sang together while we were walking home. Now I'm listening to the song that made me fall in love and I can't believe it's from 2 years ago. Now I'm crying for happiness . Thank you Matt. Thank you Mika.

And to the romance when I was 14 years old And to my heroes that were dressed up in gold Only hoping one day I could be so bold Where have all the gay guys gone? If we are all in the gutter It doesn’t change who we are ‘Cause some of us in the gutter Are looking up at the stars [x2] So tell me Where have all the good guys Where have all the good guys Where have all the good guys gone? [x2] Thank you Rufus, thank you Auden and James Dean Thank you Emerson and Bowie for my dreams Wilfred Owen, Kinsey, Whitman and Rimbaud Thank you Warhol, thank you patience, thank you Porter and Cocteau If we are all in the gutter It doesn’t change who we are ‘Cause some of us in the gutter Are looking up at the stars [x2] So tell me Where have all the good guys Where have all the good guys Where have all the good guys gone? [x2] If we are all in the gutter It doesn’t change who we are ‘Cause some of us in the gutter Are looking up at the stars [x2] So tell me Where have all the good guys Where have all the good guys Where have all the good guys gone? [x2] It’s not the cowboys that are missing anymore That problem was already old in ’94 Don’t be offended, this might seem a little wrong Where have all the good guys gone?

This is a truly fabulous musical masterpiece in which Mika pays an unutterably poignant tribute to his heroes. Mika’s unrivalled vocal dexterity, great brilliance and unfettered imagination make him one of the most magnificent audio-visual art pop superstars ever. He is the real embodiment of high fashion, poetry, theatre, singing and dance.

I love this song WAY too much! It's one of the few songs that feel very very special and unique to me, like no other song! The pre chorus (If we are all in the gutter, ...) just sounds so hopeful and powerful, like it's raising me up!

Mika strikes a chord in 2020's culture: "Where have all the good guys gone?" There are so few admirable men left, as modern 'toxic male' and cancel culture has all but destroyed the image of male role models. Whether they are artists, astronauts, cowboys or even gay men - the void is apparent. There are precious few admirable men to look up to anymore, across all stripes of 'maleness'. David Bowie is one man I miss, as his creativity and individualism and constant reinvention stimulated much of my own.
