His body remains very low during the hop phase. This prevents his right leg collapsing on impact and allows him to conserve horizontal speed throughout the next two phases.

Excellent analysis. I wondered why his hop phase wasn't so great yet his hop to jump phase is majestic.

This made me very happy. I felt so sorry for him when he missed making the 1988 Olympic Team when his shorts robbed him of 2 inches and he missed out by an inch. His son is now an NBA star and a former Buckeye.

He gets such little height out of the Hop and the Step. It's incredible how he manages to jump so far on the last phase.

Yes. I went to a rival high school of Mike Conley's in Indianapolis, and I'm also friends with a guy who played on the basketball team with him. Mike Conley the TJer is the father of Mike Conley the basketball player. The father is also the agent of his son and his former HS and College teammate Greg Oden.

Jonathan Edwards was the best triple jumper ever, along with Christian Taylor No doubt about it! But Mike Conley was a super athlete, better than Edwards : he was a very good sprinter (100-10"36, 200-20"21 - 20"12w), and a very competitive long jumper (bronze medallist in Helsinky 1983, personal best 8,43m). One of the GREATEST JUMPERS of all time!

vinci brug Actually his best was 8.63 (wind-assisted). His unassisted PR was 8.46 & he did 20.12 in the 200m I’m being pedantic, though. Conley really was an amazing athlete & easily the best combo jumper in athletics history. I can’t think of anyone else whose medaled in both the long & triple jumps at the WC & Olympics-not in the same competition but still...
