In this episode of Wood Vibrations, Mike Dawes shows you how to play guitar in a very unconventional way - by using two-handed tapping to play while the guitar is on your lap. For tabs, check out:www.guitarworld...

"She hates it whenever I try to speak French" LOL Boy, the little "karate chops" do sound quite different, with that percussive attack sound. I saw Chick Corea reach into a piano one time, and didn't realize what he was doinf (it wasn't a mute or pluck). I guess it was probably a string touch to generate harmonic vibrations as you do here with the light touch. I will have to go back and see if i can hear it. I think it was in one of the collabs with Hiromi. The more I watch this stuff, the more i am thinking of picking up a guitar and learning a few things. I like the fact that you can take the instrument anywhere to play, unlike say, a piano or organ.

If you like this style of playing as well as Erik mongrain. Take a look at MEXES channel he does a beautiful song of his own called "Besitos" where he uses standard tuning on the guitar. Beautiful piece of music. Also try Morf on his channel too. He sings too on some song's good voice. They are all very good & create beautiful music.

I have been putting off trying to learn this style of guitar for a long time. My accoustic is very old an was inexpensive but i love its sound....i suspect it might have a pretty high action. Is it normal to have extreme difficulty getting notes to sound hammering on with the left hand? I have no problem with the pointer finger but even my middle struggles to hammer on....its like starting all over again lol

Mike Dawes, please tell me how and where to actually find complete lessons for a beginner to learn this method! I have suddenly decided at age 60, and not to mention hand deformities and arthritis that I need to play guitar! I am wondering if there are books on this method? Also, I prefer an electric guitar. Can it be done on electric guitar? This method would solve my issues of grasping the guitar neck the traditional way! I’m so excited to see this! Gives me hope. Please let me know where I can find books or videos on this. Seriously...total beginner here! LOL! Thanks in advance for any help!

Beautiful guitar, music, and absolutely beautiful tone! I never liked the pickups on acoustics until now, always soundes unnatural, not in this case, why would that be?.
@hie_rarch
@hie_rarch 7 жыл бұрын
if you can see from his guitar, there's 2 jacks. probably one is the pickup somewhere hidden, perhaps usually under the bridge(?), 2nd is the d'addario pickup on the sound hole, and also his guitar is mic-ed up. combination of the 3 + careful mixing will produce such a tone

Cgcggc is another.. Open tunings allow for harmonies across strings. For example using CGCGGC tuning.. You can use your two right hand fingers to add more depth to the 4th and 5th strings... Or you can hit two alternate notes in the scale, like 3rd fret and 5th fret easily... Standard tuning is good for basic scales and chords and yada yada.. But the lap tapping in standard gets... Messy 😂 Especially because of how you have to reach some notes etc

You keep referencing different chord shapes, but 1. we are in DADGAD. I don't know any chord shapes in DADGAD. 2. You are naming chord shapes with augments and diminishes. I don't know those outside of DADGAD. Where do we learn these different chord voicings/shapes you are referencing? The entire last 1/3 of the video goes from beginning to advanced, with no real instruction on building the gap in between for those of us who are less than advanced players. Help?

Jeremy Brewer You sound like you may be at a place in your musical journey where it would be useful to move beyond chord shapes to a more harmonic understanding of the guitar - or music in general. Mike's notion of considering the guitar as six piano-like lines is key here. I don't want to insult your intelligence, nor do I want to talk over your head, but I remember the frustration of music sounding like a foreign language (which, it sort of is). I'd like to try helping fill in some of the blanks, if I may. How strong is your understanding of basic harmony (intervals, chromatic layout, major scale formulas, etc)?
@humanname1458
@humanname1458 5 жыл бұрын
Chord shapes don't change with the tuning. He always references what he does relative to standard tuning. For example a C major shape will be the same chord shape and notes no matter what tuning.. Tho itself wouldn't be a c major chord

I think that's because both sides of the string play, but guitar pickups only record one side of the strings.
