Interesting. I worked on a Cradle record and it was locked pretty tight to the grid. Of course this was a decade after Dusk…

I think a major part is the interaction between band members. Everyone’s pushing and pulling the tempo faster and slower in every bar. When you record separately, or to a click, you have to conform into the click track or part that was played first, instead of it reacting to you and your playing.

Totally agree! I think both ways have their pros and cons in specific situations though. Mostly I prefer the more human way, but some people and bands can really groove with feeling to a click as well. Most often not… 😁

@@hoborec yeah, in many ways you have to be better players if you record without a click track. The same way you have to be a good singer if you want to record vocals without pitch correction :)

Is it not due to the dynamic compression? especially with the variety that raises the volume on sounds that should sound lower. That it can have side effects on the drum sound itself
