Love your spirit Ginger! I agree with you 100%. I finished high school when this came out and heard it many times, but I did not go out my way to listen to it. Disturbed version I have listened to many time and it is packed with emotion and a very strong message. I can not think of anyone who could have performed this song so well.

David Draiman...one of the best male vocalist's on the planet! Can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor to awesome rasp and grit and back again on a dime!! Amazing voice control and so soulful and powerful ! His range is also to die for! He's got it ALL !!

I grew up with a the S&G version but to be quite honest if you were to ask me back when the song came out what the lyrics were or what they meant my answer would be "hmmmmm I don't know"...many many yrs later in 2016 I happened to be watching TV show "Conan" I heard Conan announce Disturbed...David Draiman starts singing the sound of Silence you could NOT pry me away from the TV screen I was so emotional! I didn't want the performance to end! By the time it was over I had tears in my eyes and I leterally heard every single word for the very first time! That's how much Disturbed grabbed my attention!m..I was hypnotized and mesmerized and extremely EMOTIONAL at rolled up into one! So This version is so awesome if it can do this to me when the original version I was not even interested in listening to the lyrics I mean I didn't hate it, I just couldn't even get into the lyrics, so it did absolutely nothing for me it was just another song playing on the radio...but this version had me to where I couldn't believe they did this song so beautiful I was in awe!!!! I recorded the show just to play " the Disturbed performance"& to show my fam & friends and ask them what they thought about this rendition just to see if there reaction was as emotional as mine and yes, it would become the subject of the entire evening Everytime I played it for someone everybody loved it as much even more than me if that's even possible & "I doubt that".....so yes love love love David Draiman & Disturbed the sound of Silence plus all of Disturbed music is really deep & amazing!!! If you like metal music! I just love all of there lyrics of all there songs!!!

The original was done by Simon & Garfunkel when they were in their early 20's. Their sound, as fits with the folk-y sound of the time, was light and airy. It had the message, but to be frank, it was a message delivered by (no offense to the youngsters out there) boys. Disturbed's version has the same message, but delivered by men, with the advantage of 50 years of perspective.

Observe the posture of people with their cell phones, bowed over them, praying to the neon god. Observe people texting--talking without speaking. S & G saw it coming and sang it as a sad prophecy. Disturbed sings with frustration that those who heard the original song didn't listen to it's message. David's version captures today's zeitgeist.

I agree that the original is a great song and loved it for many years, but when I heard this version by Disturbed, I cried. This song, the way it is sung by David is the best. Unfortunately, it's the only song I like by Disturbed.

From one who was a teen in the late 60's we were supposed to be seen and not heard. There was Vietnam, the draft, protests, assassinations and we were to just shut up. Paul Simon's lyrics embody the angst and anxiety of my generation. David's voice and interpretation brings the raw emotion and anger that we were not supposed to express. The world still is a very dark place and the warning is still unheeded.

To me, Disturb’s interpretation of the song requires anger. Through social media, we have never communicated so much, but hear so little. Nobody is listening because everyone is talking. So he shouts to get his words heard.

My view in it has always been that Simon and Garfunkels original was the sadness and the lamentation of it. Where as disturbeds version is the anger and frustration of seeing what’s going on and being unable to do anything because no one will listen. Disturbeds is an angry warnings. Simon and Garfunkel is the sadness of the after effect. Edit: Mike said it just as I’ve always thought of it. Great reaction!

It took me a while to get to hear this version as I really didn't want to hear a heavy metal (or Nu Metal, given the band) version of this song, so I put it off for a long time. Paul Simon saw THIS very performance on Conan and loved it. This has become a standard for the band, always expected at their live gigs! David and his brother were classically trained singers. Paul Simon has said that himself and is why his put a link on his page to the version Disturbed did of his song. He said he cried when he heard David sing the song on Conan.

Hi from Scotland. An old friend of mine, a redhead, I used to do a lot of clubbing (not seals) with used to have something he always said when he spotted a girl in a club he was going to try and 'pull'. Just two words said with a kind of predatory glee and anticipation. "Dirty Ginger" and off he'd go. Redheads not hard to find in Scotland in case you don't know. Henk Poort’s version lacks the personality of this performance in my opinion. David Dariman’s decision to hold the ns absolutely make this performance. While Poort went the more traditional route and held the vowel sounds. It didn’t mesh as well for me.
