Sometimes I can't tell whether Trey hit "octave down" on the Whammy pedal or Mike is just getting a little vocal with his phrasing.
@rudimentsofkev17 күн бұрын
What you're describing is muddiness. And this "sonic soup" style jamming is part of why their music has lost any sort of interest or fascination for me.
@dannygold288217 күн бұрын
@@rudimentsofkev The separation in the mix has been good on summer tour after they ditched on stage amps (especially Mike). It was definitely getting muddy last year with the short scale bass, but going back to a 34" helped that. They're definitely into a lot of synth sounds recently, but I don't think it's been muddy. When everyone has a lot of effects unless you listen to them A LOT it can be heard to tell if a synth part is octave down on guitar, Mike's right, or Page on an actual synth.

What a rare treat to be living in an era where Phish started, developed, and molded their craft to become the most alternative alternative to their peers and other more recent music industry acts. Having said that, Mike must be protected at all costs! Thanks for the intriguing tour of your sounds and how they are made Mike. There is no Phish without each of these individuals. Power on!

Mike basically has a super mini “Wall of Sound” underneath him with the different strings reverberating whenever hit and the “mute” pad is identical to Bob’s Persian rug “gate” setup in 78’ when not standing on it in front of the mic it cuts it off. Very nice, Mike

Wow! That's a lot of stuff to keep track of AND remember how the songs go. I've been drumming for 30 years and can barely sing two bars of backup vox whilst playing. 😆 I loved the chim chim effect so much. Damn, that was pretty. His "doohickey" was a clever solution for It's Ice.

What's insane is how many Bass Rig videos Mike has done, and how much he changes things (usually adding pedals, and not taking out the old ones). This is interesting with the lack of speakers. Phil Lesh would be horrified. 😂 Thanks, Mike! ETA: nice to see the Source Audio Artifakt has joined the crew! And still prefer the Modulus, and you proved why again in that little demo, especially when needing to add the "doohickey", instead of just using a 24 fret 5 string. Seem to be violating Occam's Razor there... 😂😂😂
@panicmosem596919 күн бұрын
How do they keep up with all those pedals?? My friend is always adding and rearranging his setup, always has something new. It's hard enough just playing the instrument 😂😂
@alvarhanso631019 күн бұрын
@panicmosem5969 practice and patience. I've had up to 17 pedals on my boards, now "just" 10, but a more complicated set up with MIDI and such. One of the keys is exploring a multi effects pedal and figuring out what things you like to help your sound. For Phil, it was EQ units and knobs on his basses, so a simpler (still complex) setup. Gordo has been a bass effects pioneer, and the guy I've taken inspiration from for my boards, though I also don't have a grand to plunk down on an Akai Deep Impact or Lovetone Meatball, luckily Source Audio makes digital pedals where you can emulate many of the other pedals, and get lots more versatility and 128 presets on most of them. The presets and choosing of those can be the biggest stumbling block to that instant creativity, because you do have to search and think about the next one while improvising. I have used the MIDI Controller to set up sequences of patches of presets by a setlist, but that locks me into sounds, which feels limiting. Having a bass tech would certainly help. 😀 But it's a lot of fun to have such a wide palette of sounds available at your toe tips, though there are challenges for sure. Another big key: rehearse and practice with the effects. How they sound alone, and how they sound in a band mix are not the same thing at all, especially with bass. Overdrive and reverb tend to suck out fundamental depth, and as a bass player you need to keep that depth, so, for me I do 2 amps, one with effects, the other clean.
