Under GM Mike Greer, I don’t see the Sharks contending for the Stanley Cup any time soon. Why is he hanging onto Erik Karlsson?

Good interview and look into the "mind" or brains behind the evolution of new Sharks team identity. Mike Grier disappointed me with the Brent Burns trade where I think he was too hasty and did not get enough return. Burns would now be in great demand as a supporting defenceman on any Stanley Cup contender and Sharks would have been delayed in their evolution by waiting for better deal, or so I speculate in hindsight. There was no need to rush into his trade as Grier did to "kick start" their team transformation earlier rather than later. Timing of any trade is a GM judgment call, but with Sharks losses piling up now there will be more pressure by fans to make even worse trades out of desperation. About one third of Sharks roster is new and two thirds returning players, so that is why it should take about one third of the season to transform the team and let its new identity and leadership emerge. Losing Burns' leadership without proper replacing of it leaves a GIANT GAP (similar to those famously missing teeth in Brent's smile) in the jaws of our Sharks' identity. Will Erik Karlsson play well enough to replace Burns or not? is the big question I have now. I hope Mike Grier's next trades work out better for the Sharks and he expands the prospects pool enough to find some real goal snipers in the minor leagues or juniors and undrafted players. Maybe a good pick up on waivers would make up for lack of scoring.

Burns was 37. Your expectations were way too high if you thought he’d return more. Have to be realistic.
