Hiya, outstanding riding, beautiful lines and a great smooth lap. I was the slower Replica Hailwood rider on your right and you passed me after the original start line after Agos Leap. I'd have loved to stay with and follow but you had the pace on me....and the video shows it. Beautiful flowing lines and showing the Hailwood doing what it's designed for. Congratulations. Superb line around Creg Ny Baa. Yes, we may have had to have one piece leather suits made/bought but riding on Closed Roads on the Isle of Man is an honour IMHO. Sadly its getting harder and harder, they seem to want Past Masters, VIPs and/or bikes with racing history. I've ridden it 6 times, 5 different bikes but I suspect unless I buy an ex racing machine, no more. Couldn't get a ride in 2019. And Health and Safety wouldn't permit that here on the mainland either.... Thank goodness for the IOM. Well done you - superb entertaining ride. Stuart

Beautiful video, thank you. My old mechanic in France had a Pantah he raced on occasion, sounded awesome. In 1998 my first big bike was a '91, bright red 750 SS half-fairing, with white frame & wheels,pillion cover, and the compulsory folded biscuit tin lid to avoid the top cylinder's manifold freezing in winter! All my mates laughed at its puny power. I loved every minute of riding it for 2 years... I still really miss it nearly 25 years on. Would buy another one in an instant. (...and I've been riding BMW's since...)

Yes Stuart it was a great privilege to have the chance to do a closed lap, I have been going to the IOM since 1981 and riding the track on open roads, it was always way up on my bucket list to ride the track on closed roads if I ever got the chance and I enjoyed every second of it ! I particularly liked the riding through Kirk Michael at 100mph in place of the usual 30mph with cars everywhere...lol I was also lucky to get a fairly clear run and that the bike went well without any problems which is why I never revved it too much until the finish line as the last thing I wanted was any mechanical problems. I'm not sure what the current restrictions are for doing a further parade lap but given the slightest chance I would love to do it again. I did try and find the photographer that took some pictures of all three of us on the start line I even gave my details on the day to one but never heard anymore.

Brilliant video. Glad I've just found this. I have one of the first 500 which I need to get back together.. It was nearly finished about 10 years ago but went back on the job list, now needs stripping again... I raced in the Manx this year but wouldn't fancy riding an MHR around there without more ground clearance. Hope to finish mine next year. Bought my first MHR on my student grant money at Leeds University late 80's. Used to ride it balls out everywhere then sold it to go racing. A mate has it now, happy days 😀
@kernowkimpy160010 ай бұрын
Yes the ground clearance isn’t that good but at least it prevents you from going stupid, I’ve worn holes in my fairing and then had them repaired and try not to scrape it again but it’s so difficult as the bike handles so well. Well done on riding the Manx, I don’t think a lot of people realise the effort it takes to even get on the start line.

As a Ducati SS "grandpa" I can say this his carbs are badly synchronized. The throttles do not open concurrently! The distance between the two carbs was one of the main issues when "bowden cables" were used for actuating the throttles. I was told that Dell'Orto offered electric driven throttle drives, but they never replied to my letters in the late 1980s.

@@kernowkimpy1600 I have a question that you may be able to answer: My 80/81 has an odd two-piece fairing. I think it's an exact copy of the one piece but with a split; it doesn't have the lower cut-outs for the exhausts and the split is lower and at a different angle from the regular 81/82s. I scoured Google pictures and have found two other bikes with the same, both the same age. One (sold by Bonhams) was originally fitted with a one-piece but it got damaged and was replaced by the two piece like mine when it was still very new in '80. My guess is that a British shop manufactured some two piece fairings using the one piece as a mold is response to the PITA oil change routine with the one-pieces. I don't think it's an early factory Ducati fairing although all fairing parts, decals and colour are correct. The positioning of the white stripe and the big white "Ducati" indicate to me that the manufacturer didn't pay close attention; my white stripes and "Ducati" decals slope down instead of being parallel to the road. The Bonhams example is perfect and another is parallel to the road but way too low. When you look at pictures of MHRs, it's common to see the white stripes at odd angles. Anyhow, have you ever seen a fairing like mine and do you have any knowledge of it's history? For reference my bike frame is DM900SS 901057 and engine is 091558 DM860 D. Goldlines, black lower fork legs, stainless chain guard, no side covers. I believe the first, MK i MHRs, with the plastic tank covers were frames 900000 to 900300 which I think makes mine the 57th MHR built after the last MK I. It's one of the common UNM plates registered in March 81 in the rush before licensing fees jumped in the UK. I used Robert Miller's list (www.bevelheaven.com/data-squarecase.htm) to compare and it does suggest that mine is an '80 made bike. It's possible that it originally had a one-piece fairing. Here's the best example of the same fairing as mine, with the correct positioning of stripe and decals: www.bonhams.com/auctions/19290/lot/324/. Anyhow, I'm interested in your thoughts.
@kernowkimpy16006 жыл бұрын
@@Rick-uu5yo I have just noticed that the example you give for sale at Bonhams is DYP 931V that is one of the bikes that completed the Isle of Man lap with me, you can see the No plate at 17sec in the video and has now been rebuilt by the current owner using a one piece fairing which is correct and the bike looks great. The way i understand it the first 250 came with fiberglass covers over the tank (my friend had No 6 until he sold it recently), the next run came with polished edges to the wheel rims steel tank and with a one piece fairing and some came with certificates and some didn't apparently. Then came the two piece fairing which mine is and the DUCATI logo on the side of the fairing, after that came the side panel model with black calipers. My frame No is 901186 and like yours was registered in March 81 and is also UNM which like you say was registered to avoid licensing fees raised back then, i believe all bikes were imported by Coburn and Hughes and they registered them. The first owner acquired it in July 81. I would say your bike is like mine, two piece with gold calipers and black fork legs. Hope this helps.
@Rick-uu5yo6 жыл бұрын
@@kernowkimpy1600 Our bikes are pretty close; my plate was UNM766W. I live in Canada now but still have the old plate and tax disc. I'm pretty sure my bike was dropped, not crashed but dropped; it has replica Contis to add to this suspicion. I guess the odd-ball fairing will remain a mystery; if it was originally a regular two-piece then it's odd that a badly scratched part would not simply be tidied and repainted. The bike hasn't been ridden since 1990, a crime I know. Winter plans include carb and brake rebuilds, a tank lining and I'm going to pull the heads just to check that all's OK and re-shim the rockers. The windscreen got broken during transit some years ago so I need a new one; I may ask you for exact dimensions of yours to ensure I order the right one. I'm going to repaint, stripe and logo the bottom fairing to make it look correct and I need to fabricate some fairing brackets. Thanks again for your video; I've been binging on desmo vids to kick myself into action.

Hi Stephen, the event was a parade lap to celebrate 40 years of Mike's TT win in 1978. It also had Honda RC30's in the parade celebrating 30 years of manufacture. It was a chance in a lifetime to be able to do a lap of the TT course on closed roads. I had to keep telling myself not to rev the bike too much as the last thing I wanted was to have an engine failure, after all the bike is very nearly 40 years old. I believe the top speed is about 210 KPH. I did rev it near to the red line on the finish line.

Superb man; however I do not get it why you did it hard into town at around 165km/h that put me my neck hair crisp! (in a part was very dangerous indeed if some one does not know the curves etc) and then in most part of the "open road" you did it mild; only in couple of parts you put the bike at 175km/h or so. Thanks
@kernowkimpy16004 жыл бұрын
I'm pleased that you liked the video. The reason I kept the revs down on the straights was with a top speed of 220km/h I would of put the engine at risk revving to the red line and knowing this may be a once in a life time chance to ride the circuit on closed roads I didn't want to blow the engine up during the lap, the only time I took it to the red line was over the finish line.
