Why do I enjoy his shows? I took Theater and Classical Studies in university. I worked customer service and retail. Never built anything. But I love his shows! I suddenly realize why. When I was just a rugrat, our neighborhood in Dartmouth Nova Scotia was being built by one construction company, run by Mr. Cross. Us kids HAUNTED their building sites, watching everything, getting in their way. And they were like saints. Patient, kind, funny. Mr. Cross was so nice to us. He was a person that if he stopped to offer a kid a ride, we knew we could get in. He wasn't a stranger. He built our homes. I'm 61, and it was 50 years back. I remember so much about that time. Those guys were fabulous. I miss that neighborhood.

The cost of building new in New Zealand in 2024 is apparently $4500 to $5200 NZD per square meter. That's single story, no basement, no central heating. I have no clue as to the cost of building in Canada where it gets to - 30 degrees Celsius in some places!?!
@KarleneE5 ай бұрын
Hi, I'm Canadian. It honestly depends on where you wish to build. In Toronto or Vancouver it is very, expensive. Your AVERAGE home is more than $750,000. A million+ $$$ is very, very common. If you go further north or away from urban centres, the cost can be less, but it also depends on access, availability of materials and if your builder is local or travelling in to where you are. Canada's big, so there's quite a bit of variability. With a wind chill, the temperature can drop to -40℃ to -50℃ in some places. 🥶😉

It is not on an island. It is not even in Ontario. It is not a cottage. I guess since it was produced seventeen years ago, they forgot where they were.

I don't understand the title of this episode. They didn't go to an island cottage in the back woods of Ontario. They were in Canmore Alberta. On top of that, the on-screen graphic said Rocky Reno. What does that mean? This is so messed up.

YEARS AGO.....My husband and I decided it was time to rebuild the front porch on our 1911 Craftsman style home. Now, [ this poor house] had been lived in for nearly 30 years, by a pair of "Hey no problem, I can do that" MORONS who should have been crucified on the front walk the first time they picked up a freakin hammer. These two? Seriously, they had no business hanging a picture! When the original steps died, they DIY'd the replacements. They. Built. The. Front. Steps. Out. Of. PARTICLE BOARD. No Mike. I am NOT kidding. In addition, the entire front porch had deteriorated to the point where, if there were two parallel lines ANYWHERE? It was a complete coincidence. My best friends husband was a handy man, and I asked him to go over the home inspection and let me know what might have been missed. Knew I had no hope of persuading my husband not to buy the place ... Just wanted a clue as to what I was up against. Nothing that Floyd pointed out was actually on the inspection report. Oh wait, the inspector was Mrs DIY's brother in law. I'm sure that was just a coincidence, right? Basement plumbing was repaired with a split open Campbell Soup can, wrapped and duct-taped in place and then wrapped in a kitchen towel. There was SO much more. Floyd's verdict? Six verses of "Isn't that PRECIOUS!" followed by a firm instruction to RUN. That house was clause number one in my divorce petition. Oh, BTW,the porch rebuild cost about 12 1/2K, and included THREE "STOP, this is not what we agreed in the contract" notes from me to the contractor They tried to tell me it would be extra to do it my way, and I told him to put the guy who wrote the bid onto the barbeque, I was not his cash cow. God that man hated me😏

I know who wears the pants in this house, maybe the man should make some decisions and then hope that things go well....... But it remains terrible that once again the builder knows nothing and just messes around.
@theloredaughter6 ай бұрын
I suspect it’s more a language barrier than “who wears the pants.” He sounds like he speaks Japanese as his first language, so she is probably just more comfortable speaking in front of a camera in English than he is.
@lornahardin45636 ай бұрын
That is totally a mean comment.
@sachadee.61046 ай бұрын
so if the male was doing the decisions (who said they didn't together?), then their builder would not have been crap? Tsssss.
@KarleneE5 ай бұрын
They both seem quite shy. Some people are quite reserved and if he's Japanese (which I suspect), it could be cultural reserve as well. So many times her eyes misted over while speaking. Even Mike said "happy tears." She seems very gentle and very betrayed by the way the other builder tried to take advantage of them. In the same circumstance I wouldn't be silent. I would be outraged.
