Mike Love - "No Justice"
This is "No Justice". I recorded this recently for the Show Me Love tribute to the Reggae legend Clinton Fearon. I chose this song to honor and pay tribute to my friend and mentor, but also because of the outrage I felt over the murders of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, and the escalating police brutality, aimed at people of color, during quarantine. Subsequently, George Floyd was murdered by police in Minneapolis, and people everywhere finally just said, "we won't stand for this anymore!" Protests across the U.S. and in many other countries have been going now nonstop over the last couple of weeks, with people of every race standing in solidarity with our black brothers and sisters, crying out for justice, crying out for equality. Like the lyrics say "Too much power in the hands of the ignorant, belligerent, incompetent and entitled". I pray that we will find peace and healing across all nations and I feel like maybe these are the first steps towards that, finally being honest with each other and ourselves about inequality and the privilege that many of us take for granted. It's like Clinton says, "you write a song like this with the hopes that in time, it will lose its relevance." For now though, it remains a potent and powerful message.
