Mike Love never understood that if he were just the chill beach boy's singer rather than the uptight, ego-maniac beach boy's singer, people would automatically give him all the adoration he so desperately wants. You probably do not know the background of what was going on. The band was managed by Brian's father who froze Mike Love out even though he wrote some of their biggest songs. Mike never got the credit for those songs for years and lost out on lots of money that others got. It is easy for us to think that what we see on stage or in public is everything.

@Billy Billcatsavick Brian and Dennis both had serious mental health issues, associated with some very bad people and caused a lot of problems within the band. Including sleeping with Love's wife. To note, Love also won a lawsuit showing he was not properly credited for upwards of 35+ songs. He is the custodian of the Beach Boys. If you look at the history, it was never Love causing the drama or hurting his fellow band mates. The Wilson brothers were horribly behaved and it took its toll. That and Love and Wilson also saw different futures for the band. For ANYONE to say Love has no talent or in the wrong is just plain ignorant of the facts and probably motivated by political biases as well.

Imagine taking a mic to interrupt the man who wrote pet sounds. Where would Mike be without Brian? Where would The Beach Boys be if Brian wasn’t experimenting? The non-experimental stuff was great, but to be remembered you need to innovate. So many great bands forgotten, but Brian’s songwriting gave The Beach Boys longevity. It takes something different and new to be remembered. You can’t just be great in a genre you’ve stepped into to be remembered. You gotta fight the boundaries of genre. Brian didn’t just create the rules of surf rock. He broke those surf rock rules. And then he broke the overall pop rules. And then he broke the music rules. Of course Pet Sounds and Smile wouldn’t be understood at the time. They were too fresh. It feels condescending to use the word “bullying” with adults. But grabbing the mic and yelling out random bullshit feels like bullying when Brian doesn’t want to confront Mike and defend himself. Brian’s had a hard fucking life, leave him alone. He wrote "Goodnight, oh baby, sleep tight, oh baby" verse, that you can hear at the end of the song. And "Only With You" from Holland album, which he "co-wrote" with Dennis. He only wrote the hook at the end "All I wanna do, is spend my life with you". And after that, he calls himself a "major songwriter".

I have loved the beach Boys from the first time I heard them - I have been saddened by their often seen dysfunction, but they are human beings so like most of us, they have had their issues. Without question, Carl was my favourite and still is - I liked Dennis as well and didn't mind Al Jardine - I thought Bruce Johnston added a great deal of gentleness, talent and apparent sense - of course, how could anyone not recognise Brian Wilson's extraordinary genius, and it is a massive loss to us all that we will never see or hear what he would have achieved had he stayed on track, but I was never really able to warm to Mike Love - perhaps it wasn't until now, having seen this video, that I understood why - what a tosser - let's face it, a classic example of a person with nothing sensible to say and no great capacity to even articulate whatever it is that he thinks he is trying to convey. If he wasn't famous, he wouldn't be listened to by a homeless person hoping for a feed.

I had the privilege of seeing the Beach Boys live in Bournemouth in the UK in 1991. Other than Dennis it was the original line up. Brian even came on and did the couple of numbers. They were magnificent. Well, magnificent if you excuse Mike Love. Whatever he does just makes me cringe, and he looks like the creepy uncle you'd never leave your kids with.
