Like it or not, this man deserves all the respect in the world. He's easily one of the most versatile, dedicated, intelligent, positive, and emotionally connected drummers in the history of drumming. This is just one video as part of a larger video with many styles and a larger career as a musical chamaleon. He prefers metal but the more you learn about him the more you realize he takes risks and borrows from many traditions outside of metal constantly. Even here he started playing traditional grip as fast or faster than Buddy Rich (for anyone trying to compare them, which is unfair anyways...). Also, remember the point of this video is speed WITHOUT triggers. There isn't supposed to be any perceptible "feel". There's no time for it here. Judge his "feel" in slower styles where you have room for it. Don't cherry pick. This dude is waaaay too dedicated and humble to get any hate.

@@Tanildes haha, you obviously haven't heard/watched enough interviews and performances with Mike. That's ok. I understand. He plays with more heart than you seem to be able to appreciate apparently. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean he isn't an extremely versatile player. You would know that if you studied him seriously like the other greats. Key word: seriously.

People miss the point of Mike's whole presentation at this festival. At the beginning he called it a "message of hope" because he wanted to show how someone can survive musically in any environment instead of fearing a situation. He has 2 kits set up, a "jazz setup" and a "rock setup" but he plays the wrong style on each setup... Playing metal on the jazz kit and afro Cuban stuff on the rock set. It doesn't sound totally right but it sounds... Right enough to get by!

It was supposed to be on a multi-purpose yet simple kit. Part of the point is to show he could play anything on any drumset, even if it isn't the "proper" sound or tuning. He also needs to use it for other styles. This isn't a Dream Theater gig. It was a versatile, cross-over styles clinic. He plays latin music as a lefty in another video in this clinic. This clinic also had an "ok" mix from the board. It sounds thinner than it should. Anyways, he's gotta be able to adjust. As picky as he is, he is also practical and flexible stylistically.

Buddy Rich was 10 times faster than this dude with million times more grace and elegance...Mangini has non of that
@Proghead885 жыл бұрын
Mike Mangini literally broke world records for speed. Whether you like him or not "10 times faster" is plain wrong. Also, the point of this one song is to help him demonstrate versatility with different styles. This is part of a longer video with MANY styles and ways of playing the drumset (he even plays completely lefty in another song). Also, idk if you noticed but he literally started using Buddy Rich's left hand technique at a ridiculous speed and a little LOUDER than buddy rich usually played it so... From what I've heard in his drumming and his interviews (as well as his job titles and experience as a world-class teacher) he understands Buddy Rich's drumming way more profoundly than anyone on the internet. He grew up playing and studying his stuff. Don't judge him by this video. If Buddy Rich was playing black/death metal this intensely you'd be very impressed. Mangini is a chameleon. If you watch videos of him through the years you'll learn that his "feel", his grace and his elegance takes many forms and fits into many styles from all over the world and history of drumming. He's known as a metal drummer but has an incredibly vast understanding of what "feel" is to begin with and the many forms it takes. I also recommend watching some interviews with him on drumming (the Drum Talk one is great). You'll gain respect. Which is what he deserves for his INCREDIBLE amount of hard work and efforts to educate others.
