he also has another ostinatos, actually i dont like the sound of the 5 single stroke sound live , because he uses triggers and the sound is flat, in this solo there is no triggers, so the ostinato sounds with accents... :(

@@pipps1158but you do agree Virgil is in another hemisphere than Mancini, right? Like a million times better… Virgil you could mention along side of Vinnie, Weckl, Chambers, Billy, Sanchez, Smith, Erskine, or any of the new breed and not question yourself. Mike is great but sounds more like a guy that spent years playing through the Gary Chester book. Virgil is simply way better but with that saying I would choose Virgil in a heartbeat over Thomas Lang and I love Lang and think he’s way better than MM. The truth is it’s not a competition with drumming, it’s more about who inspires you. It’s very obvious MM went through the New Breed book and listened to a lot of Billy Cobham and the guys he influenced. With that said I would suggest to everyone reading this to check out Simon Phillips if you haven’t already. Obviously we know who he’s drumming with these days and that says a lot but check out his solo and fusion stuff from the past couple years he’s on a world class level of independence, he’s got a lot more swing, and is in the 1% on a world level of technique.

Drummers out there: It's called 'soloing over an ostinato'. You play a repetitive pattern (in this case: "bd bd bd bd rest rest" in sixteenths with both feet), creating a '3/4' or '6/8' feel, while playing whatever you can imagine and create with your hands. Other examples? Check out Terry Bozzio and type "ostinato" It will frustrate you at first but will make you a better drummer later :) Try simple patterns first and build from there.

That's a technique bro. All of the camera angles are laid down on the timeline one by one by muting each video after they were checked accurately then when they are all done, you can play the different angles by splitting the tracks in your desired choice to make the editing process easily

@@RandyHanley no doubt MM is better then MP but MP still had the most influence in my growing years of drumming, not because of his patterns or, lets call em mid class techniques but with that soul for music he had 20 years ago... a mangini never gave me that goosebumps and its a fact, that his sound makes DT Music robotic and super uninteressting for me... even tho hes a beast and got super skills for polyrythms and stick technique (and foot aswell when he was younger lol) he will never be such an influence as portnoy has been and I think there a lot of drummers out there thinkin the same... however, DT got boring years before MP left but with his leaving i never had goosebumps on any of the newer dt songs again. they got old :D

How on earth is this boring to people? He literally starts the solo doing something 90% of drummers are never able to do! Every second of this is mindblowing. It is beyond comprehension sometimes even as a drummer myself! Lol what bullshit comments about no groove or feeling. The grooves he is pulling off are utterly beyond most peoples abilities. Yeah ok so its not 'palatable' for non-drummers but who cares. I hate to use the phrase but Mangini really is a drummers drummer.

That's exactly it, he's essentially ONLY a drummer's drummer, especially in this solo. If you don't play drums, most of what he plays goes way over your head because it doesn't really SOUND very good. Yes, it's impressive but most of that cymbal stuff at the beginning didn't really sound like anything musical at all.

I am a drummer and do "pam papapapa pam, papapapa pam" on kick drums is not difficult. And do quick fill ins on snare drums and tom toms is not so difficult either. but, if you do that bass drum thing, and keep the same groove all the time, while you do those crazy fill ins, then you're in a completely different league. To those who keep insisting that Portnoy is better than Mangini, I can guarantee that Portnoy couldn't do this solo IN HIS DREAMS let alone in real life!!! Technically, Mangini is light years ahead of Portnoy and anybody who has just a tiny remote knowledge of drums can see this!! Oh btw, Mangini can play any and all styles!! He wouldn't have been accepted at Berklee as a teacher if he couldn't and for those that say he can't play rock or metal, you obviously never heard him in Extreme!!

He is still one of my favourite drummers, and I'm still not a huge fan of Mangini here, though his level of precision is virtually unmatched by many a drummer today. There was no need to compare legendary drummers. I'm going to leave the comments up just for myself to see how much I've matured over 5 years. Thank you for reminding me!

All the negative comments and opinions of MM and his playing make me laugh; yet I don't recall any of the naysayers auditioning for DT, as MM did and land the gig. You can nitpick and say negative things about MM and/or his skillset all day long, but remember when you do you take ignorance to a level beyond understanding and clearly do not fully grasp MM's abilities including beyond the drum kit. MP is still a world-class drummer, but the bottom line is he was burned out and walked away while the rest of the band wanted to move forward, which is the best thing MP could've done for his former bandmates. Let's be realistic, had MP stayed or been allowed to return to DT after his hope of permanently joining A7X failed, the entire band and its musical direction would've suffered greatly, he wasn't into it anymore so naturally he wouldn't have been able to contribute to anything. It's been 9 years, DT and MP have moved on and you shouldn't continue wasting your time worrying about something clearly out of your control and about something that will never be as it was 1985-2010. Just learn to appreciate DT as they are, obviously it's working well for them especially given the amazing work of DOT, which is thankfully and rightfully devoid of any influence from misguided individuals who think MP's style still belongs.
