I love Lyle Goldstein's integrity and intellectual honesty. I don't envy him having to navigate the public atmosphere of mendacity that dominates official US governmental thinking.

I wouldn't want China to drive a wedge between Japan and the US. But I do hope Japan and China can strengthen their relationships. I don't know how the two can move past the shadows of WWII, but it would be beneficial to both China and Japan as well as all of East Asia to see a strong partnership (if alliance is too much to ask for...).

I think China has legitimate grievances with Japan that haven't been suffiently addressed.that is a fundamental problem that could be solved in the passage of time but unlike Germany who did make amends as much as one nation could but their wasn't much atonement from the Tokyo trials.if Japanese public could push political elites to make it happen it would make the starting of healing old wounds.

Addenda on the Q&A: 1. If Chines nationalism in education is a nonstarter for Japanese, so is the erasure of Japanese colonialism & war crimes from Japanese education a non-starter for Chinese. What is need for durable peace is truth and reconciliation. Can Japan do that? 2. Japanese democracy never seems t be inclusive of Okinawan citizens, but very accommodating of the Hight (both facts Mochizuki mentioned). Is that democracy? Is it just? 3. Given that Taiwan is a province of China (both PRC and ROC constitutions recognize this) any involvement of Japan in a military action would, by definition, be an attack against China. See my previous comment to the thread amplifying the peril for both Japan and China. 4. China does not plan an attack against Taiwan and has clearly cared this ad nausea. The USA has promoted this as a wedge issue to justify varies sanctions commercial sanctions against China (also harming Japan) and to sow discord between China and her neighbors (including Japan) to maintain US economic and military hegemony in East Asia, I will note that before the APEC summit a US DOD general sated "I don't believe China intends to occupy Taiwan", walking it back, and in the Biden-Xi summit on the sidelines, Xi clear stated (again) China has no such intentions. What I will note here is how easily US foreign policy and security analysts, including the two professors here, accept that as a given despite the facts and history. Will they as quickly reverse direction on this article of faith? Please comment.

"especially in regards to what happened in HK". So what happened in HK? National Security law? Murdering of innocent civilians? Burning people alive? Following innocent people home and threatening their families? Burning, looting?.... So, what happened in HK?

The speaker looks young for a 73 year old. 😂 Very interesting to know this fear of abandonment is mutual between US and Japan. It tells me the level of trust between the two is very very low.

Due to the enormous market of USA, Japan is willing to play 2nd fiddle to USA. With China emerging as no 2 economy and Japanese industry being overtaken by South Korea and China. Japan will benefit if China growth is derailed.

Being a military colony of the US since after WWII, Japan has no other option but to support US's hegemony in the Asia Pacific. Without a strong military, Japan has been entrapped in every US military moves in the region as it solely depends on its alliance for its own security reasons. However, if Japan extends it's hostility towards China, be it over Taiwan or the South China Sea, then it will not only be entrapped in the US-China adversary, but becomes a security target itself to China's sovereignity. If war breaks out, Japan is easily within reach of China's ballistic and hypersonic missiles and navy. It will be hard to predict the outcome of a war between the two nations. Now, whether the US will really come to Japan's aid or afford to face a direct war with China which many have acknowledged will be devastating to the US.
