I'm just glad that I still have my copy still along with other Mike Oldfield singles and vinyl albums . Thank you Mike for your contribution to music 🎶 that will outlive some of the cross that is around today.
@dancedecker Жыл бұрын
You are correct. The abrupt ending one as shown here waa the original, but there were so many complaints from radio DJs that got caught out by it, that they had to do a more usual ' it's coming to.an end shortly, mate' version, so that there weren't as many disc jockeys having to apologise for the few seconds of 'dead air ' after thinking it still had another chorus to go. Lol.

for anyone who is interested although often referred to as the Sailors Hornpipe, This is in fact the very famous Hornpipe The Blue Peter, hence it's original adoption for the Children's Television program of the same name, The Blue Peter is actually a flag, the flying of which by Royal Navy Tradition on entering a home Port indicated that there would liberty for all hands, hence the joyous nature of the piece, wether this was to notify or warn the town is open to conjecture!
@nakedmambo8 жыл бұрын
What are you wittering on about? There is no 'very famous hornpipe' called Blue Peter. The theme is variations on the hornpipe Barnacle Bill. This has been common knowledge for the last 50-odd years. The flag is to tell crew to report aboard ship, not that there would be "liberty for all".

How many of you out there remember when this was recorded? The programme was doing one of its Appeals at the time, and I remember that part of the proceeds from buying this on a vinyl single was going to that appeal. We were so proud when our family bought it, knowing tht not only was it a good tune from a familiar and beloved children's programme, we were donating to the appeal at the same time. As an added easter egg for all Mike Oldfield fans, the B-side was 'Woodhenge', which appears on his album titled 'Platinum@.

Ultradalek7 It's not that surprising that MO has written songs of massively varying styles given how long his career is. You're comparing two tracks that were released 35 years apart from each other! I've seen much greater variations take place in much shorter careers of different musicians. If nothing else it shows that Mike is great at composing music in a wide variety of styles and that's something to be respected.

this was the original release. early copies ended suddenly and djs complained so further pressings had a proper ending.
@chopchung8 жыл бұрын
What do you mean, "a proper ending". The track no sooner starts than finishes as it is, how on earth could they have issued a "fade out" version?. You are the SECOND person to make this claim, i have NEVER heard such a fade out version. As for the DJ's, if they had bothered to play this single a bit more then perhaps it would have made a bigger impact on the chart, it certainly deserved to.
@paulkempton83478 жыл бұрын
It wasn't a fade-out - the final few seconds (where it ends 'cold') was specially re-recorded to give a more 'definite-sounding' ending. It's rarely heard, as it was (I think) only issued to radio stations and has not been given a proper re-issue.
@chopchung8 жыл бұрын

The first pressing of the UK 7" has the shorter version. As my eyesight's too poor to read the matrix numbers it took me 6 tries of buying it for pennies whenever I saw it in a charity shop to turn one up. EDIT: IMO the shorter version is better.
