La versione su audiocassetta era la stessa del vinile. Thanks a lot Mr. Oldfield.

This may be one of my favorite songs of all time. One time I rode a plane to Florida for summer vacation. I had downloaded this album to listen to. When we flew through the clouds, the plane started to accelerate as 3:21 played. we flew a little bit downwards which gave me goosebumps and my heart was racing. I felt like I was being transported to another planet. Later when the VERY end of the song played, we were flying up above the clouds. I was crying at that point. I felt like I was ascending to heaven and had reached it. That plane ride was one of the greatest things I had ever experienced.

this is the segment from "Hergest Ridge" that blew me away when I first heard it. after the first notes that sound like a telephone line sound effect, it's then 7 minutes of pure musical fury in excellence. Mike was reportedly in one of his bad moods when he did this one(he had depression bouts during this period in his life) and really fired away when he let the instruments blaze on like a ruptured tornado. This would make a good soundtack backing for something like Steven Universe's Crystal gems battling away at the Diamonds, or maybe an obscure Japanese Anime fight battle. I just love it.

I think Hergest Ridge is my favourite from Mike Oldfield. I know that he (Mike Oldfield) doesn't think so, but for me it represents all his darker (depressif) side with his young creativity. I like it more than Tubular Bells. There was a time when i was 17 i felt depressed i listened the whole day long only one LP (Vinyl) - This one ! I felt like this ...!

+Samuel Christen You just described Tubular Bells, he was literally crying all the time recording Tubular Bells

Samuel Christen I agree. It's one of the most Beautiful rock albums ever, but also one of the saddest. Certainly my favourite album by Mike.

I love Mike´s work and music through the years and collected all albums, but to be honest - Hergest Ridge is my favourite. Words are not enough to describe its beauty!

Yes it has a spiritual quality and I’m not religious at all. Life changing if you ‘get it’, most don’t.

Hergest Ridge is my favorite Oldfield. I associate it with reading LotR because I was reading Tolkien for the first time when this LP came out. 0:58 is the soundtrack to the flight to Rivendell at the Ford of Bruinen when Frodo is pursued by all the Ring Wraiths on horse. (The book version of course, Peter Jackson ruined that scene in the movie.) I was kind of shocked to hear that Oldfield was really loathe to do this album after the curse of fame struck him post-Tubular Bells and his depression really set in. He said he just grabbed a bunch of random folk melodies and messed with them and there you go ... But WOW! I find this more mature than Bells and it really touched me deeply when it came out. Still does.

1000 kudos for this comment! I could not have said any of that better myself. It really means a lot to see someone like one of my favorite albums so much.

I usually take what Mike says with a pinch of salt. He’s inconsistent and seems to like to knock himself and his achievements. At best it’s inauthentic modesty. I never understood why he had a problem with this album, which is my favourite of all time. His most natural modes are whimsical and light (Froggy went a courting, Don Alfonso etc.) OR tense and passionate (Ommadawn pt 1 finale) but I prefer his more reposeful and relaxed pieces like HR, Ommadawn Pt. 2 and Incantations.
Go there alone, walk the ridge and get a feel for where the textures for the album originated. It's a great place for healing if you're troubled...

You can throw all the superlatives you like at Hergest Ridge but what you have to remember is that he was SEVENTEEN when he wrote it. THAT is ridiculous. Easily my favourite Oldfield album.

He was 20 in 1973 when he composed most of Hergest ridge, released when was 21 in 1974 three months after his birthday. My favourite album of Oldfield (actually equalling Incantations) also!
