Why the hate? The dude was The Rev's favorite drummer. He was honored to have been able to finish the album for Jimmy. And, Jimmy was a great drummer, but he was no MP. But, that being said, Mike had many more years of experience than The Rev did. Folks saying that they aren't impressed need to shut up, because they have no sense. And Mike was honored to finish the album for Jimmy and Avenged, and even toured with them. If Mike is honored to do it, then we should feel honored as fans that he did

Naaa, Portnoy may have been the right replacement during the first session of Nightmare tour, but he just recorded Jimmy's drum parts and followed what Jimmy and the rest of his bandmates did. Then, honestly, he is old and he's got much more experience than the band during that period. I'd rather reccomend you the new enter in the band. He has the right feeling Avenged Sevenfold needs to have :)

I've been a Mike Portnoy fan for many many years. The Rev WAS the a7x drummer and noone could truly replace him (he had sick backing vocals too). But I feel like Mike would have been a perfect fit to carry on the torch. However I think that much of him not becoming a fulltime member had to do with him being a recovering alcoholist. The rest of the band likes to party and Mike can't be around that (seen in a Dream Theater behind the scenes clip) so it wasn't gonna work out for that reason alone I think. Otherwise he would have been the perfect man for the job cause he is an amazing drummer.

It's not about how intricate and difficult it is. If it were, then the whole song would just have a drum solo underneath the other instruments, which would sound shitty. It's easy for any good drummer, but it's how you feel the music and how into it you get that determines whether or not it's boring. Mike is too good of a drummer to be bored by this, as was the Rev with many of the songs from Waking the Fallen.

In respect to all your views on the rev vs portnoy views. I had never heard of Avenged Sevenfold before i saw them last year. It was Mike's drumming that woke me up to the band and made me a fan. The Rev was the driving force behind that, so i salute both drummers for what is clearly an awesome live band. Without both drummers making that impact i'd never of taken the time to appreciate thier music. Without a doubt, they were amazing!

As bad ass that Mike is the Rev will always be the best that band will have ever had. Original, friends.

Im a massive fan, so don't take this the wrong way, but the rev cant hold a stick to Mike.

has nothing to do with skill. It's just how the members meshed and worked together. They were all childhood friends with Jimmy, so of course he was the best they will have ever had. He was also one of the main writers of their music. It is what it is.

+Kooler it has everything to do with skill. In case you didnt know, Dream Theater was Revs favorite band. And once you look them up. Theyll be your favorite band also

Stop hating on Arin? Mike wasn't a permanent drummer. Avenged said they wanted a new up coming drummer. Arin Illejay has gotten very good, I can't wait for him to prove your sorry asses wrong. He played in Not ready to die, & carry on. So you can just stop.

That kids awesome! Who is not giving him a chance? I think maybe it has something to do with their songwriting now. Its changed everytime theyve changed drummers but that is somewhat coincidental. He is playing the Revs parts in all the older material and I think he even adds to it I just started watching his drum cam videos.

One thing everyone has to understand is that every drum legend is the best at what they do in their own way. NO ONE is better than Jimmy, NO ONE is better than Mike, and NO ONE is better than Dave. They are all amazing drummers because their uniqueness is what makes them legendary. NO ONE can write drum tracks like John Bonham and NO ONE can become a better drummer than Buddy RIch. I love every drum legend and have NEVER thought that one was better than the other. That's what I believe everyone should understand.
