“Portnoy makes it look easy”. That’s not the point. The point is that Mike was one of Jimmy’s biggest influences for the drums and Mike was absolutely honored to record Nightmare and tour with the band to fill in until they found a permanent replacement.

Another point is that Portnoy was a fan of A7X, and the Rev’s drumming style was right up his alley to learn their songs, finish the nightmare recording, do a tour, actually be worth his time, and enjoy it! Portnoy is one a just a few drummers that can learn their shit on the fly with ease and make A7X’s situation happen for them.

And too be fair portnoy said himself he found it really hard to record the nightmare album because they wanted their songs to be similar to what he used to play, and even said himself that he loves his style of play because he's all over the kit that's why rev was one of a kind (not literal words, figuratively speaking)

??? If you mean them playing their new album, The stage has some of the hardest songs they've ever had. Comparable to even Waken The Fallen. Obviously sound, lyrics and composition are completely different but that album had songs with insane energy

Big time, their live shows, energy etc has really gone down in the last few years - a shadow of the live band they used to be. I remember seeing them for the first time on the ‘City Of Evil’ tour in Dublin (‘05?) and they just fuckin killed it. And did every time they came back until a few years ago. They have become very static and almost boring - not the same band at all

What? If you're talking about Dream Theater, he left on his own. Avenged Sevenfold had nothing to do with it. He was always in multiple bands, like Neal Morse, Transatlantic, Flying Colors, etc, but chose to leave Dream Theater because he felt burnt out by it

Portnoy is overrated. He uses a lot of fills that sound difficult but are actually fairly easy to play. For example: RLKKRLRLKK and move it around the kit in different variations. People think he's a god for this.
