I agree with he plays "nothing more. nothing less" as his role in LTE, but not in Dream Theater. Early Dream Theater had so many unnecessary, pretentious fills, but I love that. I believe he has lost his arrogance, is more efficient, and become a master musician. He has learned less can be more.

I'm really happy that Mike decided to edit this showing the cuts where it was comped between takes instead of a one-shot playalong that gives the vibe that his entire performance was a single perfect take. This genre of music needs more of that vibe. We're all imperfect humans trying to create beautiful, challenging music, and it's okay to not be perfect all of the time, even for one of the greats.

One thing, though: It's not that much that he messes up, but that they're recording the stuff while writing it and it's hardly rehearsed. These kinds of cuts have been in Portnoy's DVDs for decades because he works out what he wants to play as he goes.

And yeah, not just the snare sound, but the whole kit! One of the things I like about Mike's drumming (and there are many things I like about Mike's drumming) is the drum/cymbal tones he chooses... he always has such great sounding kits, where all the pieces sound so good, both separately and together.

Neil Peart is one of the geatest drummers of all times and my favorite, but the king of prog drumming is Bill Bruford. (Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, UK, Bruford...).
