All AD's are OFF on the MikeMangini KZbin Channel. Publishers usually turn them on via their Channels. These are my live drums for The Alien mixed with the tracks from our last album, "A View from the Top of the World." Although I was involved with the drum sounds and engineer on AVFTTOTW more than I've ever been to the tune of some years working a LOT with Jimmy T., this video is simply my raw tracks bounced out and I panned, EQ'd a bit on the kick & snare and that's about it. NO EQ on each Tom Track, only some on the AUX bussed track. I just wanted to spit this out. Not as sassy as the album sound, but it's raw, it's me both in bending w/feel within the click, dynamics and sound. This is a really challenging song to come out of the gate blaring and playing first. The balance shifts and tightness required are pretty demanding. It is what it is.
Check out the same take, but with no music and click track. It's a mind-burner!

Both Mikes are amazing for different reasons with their unique styles but fans can get really one sides and unsupportive sometimes. Dear Mike Mangini. To me, you were the best thing that ever happened to Dream Theater - but they chose to go back to a drummer who is more concerned with the color of his beard than with being the solid yet creative force behind the other musicians. You have given more to this band than anyone could expect. From the bottom of my heart, a huge thank you for your contribution. For me, Dream Theater is no longer interesting, but I will follow you and hope that the joy I saw you play with Cory is the joy you engage with other bands that match your level. Thanks

I’m a drummer and I was also a freelance follow spotlight operator in Denver before I started gigging full time back in the 90’s. Mangini was playing for Steve Vai for the G3 shows. I was #1 spotlight and had to follow Vai. Mangini was playing some crazy extended fills during a song and I slowly panned the spotlight to him. I got yelled at on the clearcom and went back to Vai. That was my little nod for all the drummers in the crowd and to the most talented dude on the stage.

Mike's playing is just next level. DT has such legendary talent. Petrucci, Portnoy, Myung, Rudess and Mangini. All prodigies and top of the heap musicians. There's no other band out there with such a collection of musical titans {of their respective instruments} all in the same band. I've never been a fan of James LaBrie's vocal style and he can be very hit and miss live, but everyone else in the band is off the charts amazing as musicians. Mike is without question one of the greatest drummers to ever sit on the throne. His contribution to drumming and DT cannot be overstated. Mike.....you are LEGEND.

I feel incredibly lucky to have witnessed the 'A View from the Top of the World' tour in Singapore, especially after learning about Mangini's departure from the band. Mangini's contributions as a drummer to DT are undeniable. His technical prowess broke through the barriers of the Portnoy era, allowing DT's music to venture into even bolder territories. I'm deeply disappointed with DT's decision, although I know they couldn't care less about my disappointment. To put it bluntly, just the drumming in the song 'Alien' alone is enough to keep MP practicing for a while, let alone creating such drumming. Among DT's decisions, letting MP go was the second biggest mistake, and bringing him back was the top one. I can confidently say that, among all drummers worldwide, nobody is more suitable for DT than Mangini.

it's fascinating how a musician can influence a band. mike mangini is a good example who took over for mike portnoy in 2011. mangini took the band into a new direction with tighter and more precise playing. it becomes like a new source of both inspiration and creativity for everyone in the band. songs like barstool warrior, the alien and not least the catchy song invinsible monster show exactly how the band is being shaped into a new era with mangini behind the drum kit. mike portnoy's playing style is a completely different story. he is much more fluid and raw in his playing style. when I look back at Mangini's role in the band, it has given me a new perspective on what influence entails and not least what the band has managed to make of music over the years. all respect to dream theater with both these two unique drummers.

Thank you, Mike, for starting to upload all this material! It gives me the impression that while you were in the group, you didn’t have as much freedom to do so. For years, I’ve been watching or listening to your performances with DT, and then come the Portnoy fans who have no idea what technical resources on the instrument really are. Most of them aren’t even drummers and just talk nonsense. They view it from the perspective of the artist's "legacy" since his beginnings, which defines a style-I respect that-but they don’t have the mental tools to provide a technical explanation that puts you ABOVE Portnoy’s level. It’s valid to recognize him for the meaning of the legacy I mentioned earlier, and I respect that, but as a drummer myself, I don’t use that criterion to evaluate you. I see Mike's technical resources as limited. Specifically, he doesn’t seem to go beyond 1-and-1 fills with the snare and toms, 2 bass drums with 2 hands, or 2 bass drums with 4 hands. I don’t see much more than that, though he executes it excellently, and his power is crushing. However, in your performances, I see FAR more resources than the ones I mentioned. Your left-hand skill and your ability to integrate a symmetrical kit showcase your abilities above any drummer who simply sets up their kit for their dominant hand. Even the one bass drum/one-hand high-speed patterns distributed symmetrically-something you’ve been doing for many years-require a level of training that not every right- or left-handed drummer can achieve. So now, the challenge is to see Mike try to perform DT’s songs where you created your magic. I know he can do it, but he won’t have the finesse to execute them with your resources. He’ll do it his way, but in my opinion, this will lower the rhythmic level of the band from now on. That doesn’t mean the band won’t become even more successful, though, as Mike M. is a standard-bearer for the band’s image and collaboration, something crucial for those who value DT for its essence in compositions. I don’t think most fans will stop to reflect on the points I’m making about how much more complex your performances are. It’s a free world, and I wanted to share this with you. It would be an honor for you to hear my perspective. I’m from Argentina, and I saw you live during your last performance here. I enjoyed it immensely! Warm regards!

Not a DT fan, but longtime Rush and Neil Peart fan. Brother, you are the best I have ever seen. I don't like how (purportedly) DT treated you at the end. Stay true to your art and heart and you always land on your feet!

THANK YOU MIKE! You will be sorely missed in DT. I was at your show at Merrymour Park in Redmond, WA last year and it was incredible! I would have been so pissed if I hadn't gone then found out you were leaving the band! Thank you again for everything!
