I was one of the people blessed enough to record the group chant in-studio with Mike Portnoy for this record 😊

Portnoy is a master at composing drum parts to bring out the soul of the entire song. It has a consistency that is aesthetically pleasing. Mancini while a technical beast plays each drum part more isolated to focus on the technicality of that phrase. He doesn’t have the same skill that Portnoy does on bringing the whole song together. Mangini composes like he’s giving a drum seminar. Portnoy just feels the music and leaves his fingerprints all over every nuance and has his own unique style.

As a drummer who wants to see boundaries pushed I prefer mangini. But as a music fan who wants to feel the music I prefer Portnoy

Naw hes super technical. Technical today just means shredding over time signature changes. Portnoy is complicated because his parts are so methodical. Not one drummer can play Learning To Live in its entirety. Underrated song but one of Portnoys most technical. Todays chop savvy and rudimentary drummers still cant play his parts right. There is a varying degree of technical ability, Portnoys is deceivingly difficult.

I believe the point was made earlier that a good drummer always does what sounds best for the song, not what's best for his ego/skill. MP is a very good drummer, but for him to do his normal thing on a song would've sounded out of place.

Dream Theater has never been famous. One could, however argue that DT are a much more established act than Muse and are much more skilled players. PS: I prefee Muse to DT but just barely. Both are in my top 2 bands. It's obvious that Mike was heavily influenced by Muse in this song. Let's just enjoy both bands and not say belittling things about either band.

Everybody knows who DT is Japan and most of Europe. Too bad most Americans,(and I hate to say, my fellow Canadians who catch the American cold) are very narrow minded and fold their so called 'freedom' to a machine that is the media. Celebrities start playing poker, so now it's cool if you do. UFC becomes the masculine thing to watch, so now beating people up makes you a better man. Gangster rappers shoot and sell, so blacks are stereotypically deemed to the same lifestyle. So what makes famous?
