Mike Ritland is my guest on this podcast. Mike is a former Navy SEAL, founder of The Warrior Dog Foundation, Trikos and his online dog training site Team Dog.
We chat about life, dogs, being a navy SEAL, what it takes to be a real military working dog and so much more. Mike has years of experience with military dogs; training, breeding and testing them. He gives a unique insight to the difference in pet dogs, sport dogs and real military dogs.
This is by far the longest podcast I've done and we could have gone on for hours. I think you'll love Mike's insight to working dogs and pet dogs.
Here are links to Mike's sites. Please consider supporting his work with the Warrior Dog Foundation:

As a combat war veteran I know several wounded warriors who have service dogs. They are a Godsend and so important. I believe these military k9’s are essential to helping our great service members in ways humans can’t.

Big respect to professional trainers and breeders, who are PROVEN at their vocations. I fostered and did basic obedience training with WLGSDs for USAF & USMC programs, while I was employed civ/USMC long ago. That first female WLGSD that I bought from the USMC breeder when I was 22 years old, is still my favorite k9. A nephew worked Golden Retrievers while at Westpoint, and after his 8+ yrs of serving, he was granted adoption of his second service k9. Thank you, Mr. Ritland, and all responsible, respected k9 professionals and pet persons.

I love that you both touched on the spay/neuter issue. Our prev dog was a mastiff-pitt mix (all around awesome dog!). However, adopted from shelter at 3 mos - had to provide proof of neuter before he turned 6 mos. He suffered two ACL operations before he turned two (NO, we didn't over work him), chronic allergies and thyroid issues. Breeding obviously could very well have had to do with it, but what we learned in the twelve years of his life (he's now passed) - we're now convinced that the neutering at an outrageously young age was a larger contributer than bloodline. Had a few mutts growing up that weren't neutered/spayed until they were much older - those dogs lived much longer healthy lives. Not saying every dog should be left intact forever (that's more dependant on the maturity level of the owner and behaviour/training of the animal), but it's reckless and rather cruel to be spaying animals before they're even done growing.

I was very glade to hear both of your opinions on spay & neuter. We had a vet that almost insisted that we neuter our Shepard pup a 6months. We have a new vet and a intact 2 year old shepard that is becomming truly awesome. We are planning to wait to see how his hips develop, before we decide to keep him intact or not.

I think Vets sometimes can be biased as they are running a business. So of course they will push for a certain procedure as it can benefit their business. But then again some owners are irresponsible or don't have the knowledge to keep their dog from reproducing so Vets push for a certain measure.

My Vet told me there is no conclusive science on when to spay / neuter but recommended between 6 months and a year, because the surgery was easier and it supposedly prevents certain cancers. Now listening to this podcast I'm not sure what to believe and maybe we did the wrong thing... I really wish there was more science behind all of this instead of anecdotes.

Thanks Mike for your service and your advice. As a veteran, I have one person in my small group who has working dogs who was also a Navy Seal. He is quite and rarely talks about his service as I rarely talk about mine; however, I have a large BLACK GSD Who I raised from a puppy and is only 17 months old. He has a 9 year old belgian malinois who can climb a a tree. I don’t use mine a self protection animal, but he is in training as a search dog as I am a land surveyor. We have a really small group of veterans who do get together and let our dogs play and work based on obstacle courses. I agree with you. Especially about poor breeding.

Based on the current science I’m learning in veterinary school(studies from 2019/2020), you should wait till at least one year or later to spay or neuter. If you do it before, depending on breed, you have a 2-4x higher chance of having joint issues and certain cancers.

Hi Robert. You got it again, spot on, my point o view . My girl was only recently spayed ( 6 months ago), because of health reasons she was 10 years old back then. She got never pregnant,as she never left my side, never roamed. She is well trained, I have her since she is 11 weeks old, and trained her from day one on. She know how to behave around other dogs. Here in New Zealand are far to many backyard breeders, who breed shit loads of dogs for dog fighting, as bait dogs for shark fishing ( yes thats a real thing here) . This is why neutering/ spaying is a big thing here. I got judged a lot of time about me not spaying my girl. Well, if someone is a responsible owner , and trained the dog well, I believe neutering/ spaying is NOT necessary, except in a case of health issues.

Ops,I forgot completely to thank Mike Ritland for everything he did, does and what he will do in the future ( I blame my pain killers what I have to take, because of my back injury , that i forgot you in my comment above ) What you do has to go worldwide, everyone has to know it. Every dog is different, not every ex military dog can be re-homed to be a service dog for a Veteran, a personal protection dog or " just" a companion or sports dog. Some , or most of them are to highly driven, mentally and physically, those one( but thats only my opinion) need a job. Because of their selective breeding for sometimes hundreds of years, they need to have a job. Some of them will be great for Police work, Explosive or narcotic detection for airports or border line security. They need to do what they did back when they've been in active military service. And there are those dogs, who been traumatized because of injuries in line of duty, their human partner( handler) was killed and they witnessed it and much more other reasons. Maybe I idealize dogs far to much, but I believe most of them have feelings, like we do. Some of them bounce back and go on with their lives, some of them need help. Like human Veterans, they need someone who helps them the right way, someone who knows them, someone who helps them to heal body and soul. And thats someone is you Mike Ritland. You and Robert have all my respect. I thank you both also for sharing your knowledge with the world. I hope after this Broadcast more people will understand Ex Military dogs, and treat them with more respect. The same I wish will happened for human Veterans. I meet here in NZ only one ex marine Veteran, who does incredible things for injured veterans, who are back in USA after active service. I am also happy that you give those dogs, who cant go back into society for several reasons, a final home, until they are ready to go for their last walk over the rainbow bridge. I know, I am an idealist, and hopelessly "romantic" when it comes to dogs. I could go on and on, but my point was and is. The world needs more dog trainers like you, and Mike Ritland. I have the biggest respect of you both, what you did, what you do and what you will do in the future !!!!

What a very interesting conversation! You are covering so many topics it's hard for me to keep up. I have had many great dogs in my life. 1. A good dog needs to perform a service or a task for you to be in some sort of symbiotic relationship. Something that makes the dog feel like it's there for a reason other than being a doorbell. Even if it's just bringing back a tennis ball. My service dog absolutely loves either keeping me on my feet or pulling my wheelchair, he loves the wheelchair. It makes him an inch taller, look at me look at what I can do! 2. Selective breeding is very important along with a thousand other things as to whether your dog's going to be a good dog or not. I have always went to a kennel and purchased a dog I have never ended up with a dog from a shelter not that there's anything wrong with that the best Pitbull I ever had was a stray that showed up at my house. I just always thought it was very important to see the mother to see the father to see how they behaved. To see how the puppy reacts in the litter. I do think you can take the worst dog out of the litter and make it a good dog. Something I learned with horses is making the impression early in life. If you bring a puppy home and just leave it while you go to work it's not going to be a great dog. If you bring a child home from the hospital and just put it in the house and walk away it's probably not going to be a good person, if you look at 100% of the human population how many of those people do you consider good people so it's not the race it's not the breed whatever you want to call it it's the environment and the breeding. Goldendoodle that was my laugh for the day. 3. Spaying and neutering, the dog I have now is the first one I have had castrated at 6 months pretty much under the pressure of my veterinarian and I have noticed a difference in maturity. If I could do it over I would not have. My last dog, given to me by a person that had the dog given to them was a boxer that was already castrated. My first boxer, I absolutely fell in love with this breed, if you want a big working class dog that acts like a puppy I would get a boxer or an Old English Mastiff LOL. Another dog giving it to me intact. I have never taken a dog to the pound if they show up here and my farm they get fed and they are my dog. 4. Pitbulls are great dogs if they're raised or exposed to great people same thing with Rottweilers or any other large breed dog. Our dog when I was a small boy was a Pekingese Pomeranian Chihuahua mix a ChihuahPikaPalmadoodle it was the absolute meanest dog I have ever seen in my life towards us Brothers. I wish we had a pitbull or a Rottweiler. The next dog in my childhood was a husky I snuck into my coat at a local flea market I cried to my dad so hard to keep that dog when we got in the car. Probably more wolf than dog but he was a great companion. If you want a good dog or a child spend the time! There's no other way! 5. Certain breeds do attract the wrong type of person that should never have a dog. My service dog is a Rottweiler my third one. Yes I'm old. I go to a health clinic once a month to get my blood thinner level checked. This last month the clinic had the nurse call me up and asked me not to bring my service dog with me the next time I come in because they have received several complaints that my dog made people feel uncomfortable. I guess laying on the floor and sleeping makes people feel uncomfortable. That's one of those vicious man-eating Rottweilers sleeping in the floor over there. I'm in and out in 15 minutes most of the time but they have received several complaints. Different topic different story I knew this was going to be long and I'm only 27 minutes into the video. 6. Relationship with the dog! Just a lot of information in this video thank you Robert and Mike! I fell in love with Rottweilers thanks to my neighbor who was an Anchorage police officer his dog Kahn was just amazing! I could not believe how fierce this dog could be one minute and then lick babies in the face the next. My service dog in training now Buddy the Wonder Dog I made the mistake of going to the doctor's office on Halloween is still under 2 years old and still a puppy. A nurse stepped out of the doctor's office dressed in a Wizard of Oz witches outfit green skin and everything. Buddy was sleeping at my feet and he jumped up into the sitting position and let out a Rottweiler bark. He didn't charge he didn't attack he just stood his ground and said what the fuck is that don't come any closer. That's not aggression! A good Rottweiler is so discriminative. he never even put any tension on the leash. The thing I've noticed with Rottweilers they said we'll give you two chances if you come back the third time you're screwed. 7. Hats off to the Navy Seals all my buddy ever said was could you feed my dog for a couple days. I believe I got my foundation in dog training from William Kohler. 8. Exercising the dog's mind, that's why I watch your videos Robert I'm trying to exercise my mind. My dog can be sound asleep and hear your voice and he is sitting right in front of the screen, where is Goofy where is Maya where's Dwayne. I had my ass kicked every day going to grade school by the older boys. By Junior High I reached the point where I was going to teach myself not to get my ass kicked. The thing I like most about Koehler was whenever something grabs your dog's attention your dog's First Response is to look at you and see what you're going to do. 9. This is absolutely one of your best podcast Robert thank you.

I'm only just now catching up on these podcasts. I am so in agreement with you both. I raced and showed Siberian Huskies for decades. The overwhelming number of Siberian ' champions' couldn't make a moderately competitive team. They don't have the leg length or angulation. The movement in a small show ring is not the same as in harness on a trail. The dogs have been bred poorly for a hundred years. I could go on with different breeds.

The immature dog complex is absolutely my case with my bulldog. Every time we went to the vet I felt pressured to neuter him. Now I've been looking into it and I feel like I've done him such a disservice. Not spaying my Giant Schnauzer until she's a few years old unless breeding is in the future, only after I talk to the breeder I got her from about it.

This is a great interview that has very valuable information. I appreciate the work you guys put in. Having that said, I think we must be aware that the average dog owner does not have this level of experience or understanding. Therefore, I don't think it's beneficial to belittle people who lack the knowledge or wisdom by calling them idiots. From my perspective the dog problem is a symptom of the human condition in a "modern" society. I think American society has certain structures in place that condition people to behave in a very ego centric way. Many people are disconnected from nature due to urbanization. The list can go on and on. I just hope we can learn to be more compassionate towards one another so that we can learn to grow. Education is key but humility, and some level of compassion can sometimes transcend certain barriers placed by the mind. Anyways, that's just my perspective. Keep up the great work.

@@CRJines I agree owning a license does not indicate the level of dedication a breeder will have but in my state a person is legally required to have a $150 license to breed their dogs. I just don't think it's asking too much to have Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist verify your license # before you sell or re-home pets on their platform.
@RC-qu8xg
@RC-qu8xg 4 жыл бұрын
@@CRJines I agree, I think the best way to combat this is through education. We can't win everyone but giving people adequate information so that they can make their own informed choice is the least intrusive. Alienating people who don't agree with us can be counter productive as well. We have to understand that at a certain level people have been conditioned to behave a certain way. Just like dogs need help, humans also need help to reach a certain level of understanding.
@perfectweather
@perfectweather 4 жыл бұрын
@@CRJines I agree with you there is no need for any more regulation than there already is, and I'm not asking for any. It's their personal business until they start backyard breeding, selling sick dogs and lying about whether or not they're vaccinated or dropping off all the extra puppies at ASPCA to later be euthanized. When I buy pets birds or dogs I don't consider people who do not have a business license and a license to breed the animals they have. As you mentioned the people ambitious enough to go out and get a license to breed don't always do the right thing. Why would you give more freedom and money to people who won't live up to the most basic of standards. A license to breed at least guarantees that the dogs have seen a vet.
@perfectweather
@perfectweather 4 жыл бұрын
@@RC-qu8xg I agree with your approach but it's unrealistic, and instead of providing a license number to sell dogs on Facebook and Craigslist are you implying a forced education? Do a Craigslist search for dogs under $50. I'd like to see how many of those people are going to volunteer to educate themselves. You can probably offer to pay them $100 a day to take classes on how to properly breed and train dogs and I'd be surprised if 1% of the people you call showed up. If you're too lazy to fill out a form and you also don't have $150 you probably don't have the resources it takes to care for animals.

In Germany, we collected the taxes for an elderly dog owner who did not have enough money to pay taxes for his dog. Would a tax on owning one or more dogs help in a more selective dog population? For example, a school friend of mine whose Dad was a Forest Warden had 2 rough hair Dachshunds who went hunting with him and were Forest Officers helping him find and identify Poachers. On the other hand my neighbor had a "sniffy dog" he was a Police Officer, he would bring the dog home, leave him in the hot sun without water, the dog ran away every chance and he chased it hollering and yelling at the dog. How can a Policeman get away with this? There are huge differences in the treatment of dogs in different Continents.

Very interesting conversation. I'm on the opposing side when it comes to breeding, I feel there are far too many genetic defects being bred in on consistent basis. Stumped noses so they can't smell or breathe, lower back-legs so GSDs develop hip and shoulder dysplasia, heads so small their brains don't even fit... There are actually far too many to list. I think it's a really sick industry because there's too little regard for the animal's welfare, not only in puppy-mills but long term evolution. That's not to say I deny the purpose it does have, and especially when looking for certain characteristics breeding is essential.

I have to agree with both of you guys. Most people treat their dogs like children ( spoiled children that is) I have a German shipperd. I started training him from a puppy. But he is not you gard dog type. But I dont know if some one attack me if he would bit and protect me. But he,s scared of so many things . But if it's another dog or a nother animal he will show his colors. Because he came out of gard dog parents I keep a handle on him. I hate people that think every dog should be chental. And for any one to walk up and pet. I had him for 6 years. And have been to Texas twice driveing by my self. I never had a problem with him. Except for vets and other animals. He watches people and there are a few he took a dislike too. But he was never out of contral. These people that think that dogs should not be used for protection work or have a job to do are wacke out. Just look at how unruly their kids are. Tells alot about the parents.

How do you Robert and Mike feel about a form of Classes that is mandatory for first time dog owners. One that shows the true costs and requirements for good dog ownership. For the average dog owner. I see it as a better solution for all or most the discarded dogs. Along with that would be registration and original owner held responsible until death or such time that they transfer legal ownership. I do not like government involvement but in these cases. May be a better help to resolve this issue.

I agree with everything you guys said except when Mike said the problem with pitbulls is the people buying them. No, the problem is that they were originally bred, and still bred today characteristics that make them good for dog fighting (which includes heightened prey drive and fight-or-flight instincts). This is what makes them dangerous, and why they are so overrepresented in dog attacks and deaths, that they outnumber dogs from all other breeds combined in these categories. Yes, I know there are plenty of nice pitbulls that are sweet, I have met several, but we don't make judgements on groups based on individuals, we base them off of statistics and trends. It's the same reason Mike Ritland himself uses GSD's, Malinois and Dutch Shepherds exclusively for his line of work - because, on average dogs from those breeds do the best. So no, the problem isn't who's buying pitbulls, it's who's breeding them and for what purpose.

I think you can regulate the breeding of dogs. Do not allow dogs to be sold in shops, do not allow puppy farms and backyard breeders. It should be against the law. It would be great if people were smart enough to not buy a dog from these places. These people have no knowledge or concern about the health or mental and physical stability of these dogs they sell, and the rest of us, dogs and people, have to deal with the fallout.

The occasional f bomb doesn't bother me, but there is environments were it is not socially acceptable. The most effective tool to retrain ourselves is the "Cuss Box". When caught cussing money must be put in the box. What ever denomination is on hand. A old friend was a grizzled Marine who was also a scoutmaster. His cuss box funded several pizza parties, but he was eventually able to kick the habbit with the help of all those vigilant ears.

@Granny Gear I understand your perspective. I don't mean any disrespect here. However, both dogs and humans can be conditioned to behave a certain way. So I think we must all learn to practice some level of compassion with one another. We must learn to understand ourselves and one another to a certain degree so that we can all grow. I on the one hand appreciate Cabrals no non sense approach to a certain extent. Having that said if you as a person have a better approach in delivering a message by all means do it. Perhaps your grandson will find it more meaningful the way you express yourself and the way you explain the concepts.

He has no idea what these adoption fees go towards. Each of my dog's adoption fees were $165 with tax included. The spay or neuter is the largest expense, flea treatment, worming, vaccinations, etc. Go find comparable vet services for that cost. It's a place where people can surrender their animals if they can't keep them for whatever reason, instead of just dumping them. This "there's no incentive to empty the shelters" opinion is complete bullshit. Their expenses are offset by donations, etc. the shelters are mainly full of pitties and chihuahuas due to careless backyard breeding and poor vetting of potential customers and no first right of refusal buyback policy, it's all about the money. The reason you don't find Malinois, German Shepards, purebred dog etc is because breed specific rescues pull those breeds upon intake. Again, Mike needs to do his fucking homework.

@@RobertCabralDogs Again, no he never said that, I heard nothing of the sort, your buddy needs to step outside his confirmation bias and actually do his homework rather than assume, he thinks he knows everything and speaks with "confidence" so either people will either believe his bullshit or are afraid to call him out on it, as you should have done. The adopt don't shop initiative, encourages people to adopt perfectly healthy animals instead of buying from establishments that sell puppy mill bred dogs that are usually unhealthy whereas a mixed breed dog is free from most issues that plague purebreds. Most shelters and rescues will evaluate and have a behaviorist work with it or place it with an experienced foster so they can help work through its issues. They don't want the dog to fail and get returned. From what I've read, early spaying and neutering will cause the dog's growth plates to stay open longer, the neutered dog and aggression, marking, recall, etc., there are pros and cons. Mainly the spay and neuter is to prevent even more unwanted animals due to the general population of dog owners being irresponsible. It's not just the "gangbangers" (racist, 🙄people should give you crap) whose dogs won't recall, it's also the soccer mom with the retractable leash who has no control over her animal, or the dog park people on their damn phones and their untrained dogs are escalating a situation until a preventable fight breaks out. As with any situation, even a litter of well-bred dogs will give you that one problem animal, whether it be with its health or mind. It's not just shitty backyard breeders in "bad neighborhoods" (racist code speech, just admit it) the problem is everywhere in all demographics, from cute little yorkies bred to be "teacup" sized to the double muscled bully breeds and these poodle crosses. These "breeders" don't know what OFA ex-rays are, any of them and breed for the money, the look, or both. You can do better than to indulge your biases.

@@cherylmillard2067 let me break a few things down for you from my experience in rescue and working with shelters: When someone comes on my platform they are welcomed to voice their opinion and I respect others opinions, I don't go to other people's pages and try to be the thought police. His experience is with military (retired) dogs... hardly "confirmation bias." The adopt don't shop initiative, encourages people to adopt perfectly healthy animals instead of buying from establishments that sell puppy mill bred dogs that are usually unhealthy whereas a mixed breed dog is free from most issues that plague purebreds. >>> The adopt don't shop initiative also incorporates plenty of rescues who get a dog for cheap at a shelter (cherry pick the best dogs) and then sell the dog for 500-1500$ and bust chops on people who want to adopt. Many people I know are turned down from rescues because they become GOD and won't adopt to people for really stupid reasons. You're wrong that just because a dog is mixed breed it will be healthier. Good breeders spend their lives in pursuit of healthier dogs. Plenty of rescue dogs have serious health issues (plus behavioral issues). Most shelters and rescues will evaluate and have a behaviorist work with it or place it with an experienced foster so they can help work through its issues. They don't want the dog to fail and get returned. >>> MOST SHELTERS???? I don’t know a shelter that has a behaviorist, let alone experiences fosters that work through issues. Most are trying to get dogs out the front door to avoid killing them. PLEASE Show me these shetlers… From what I've read, early spaying and neutering will cause the dog's growth plates to stay open longer, the neutered dog and aggression, marking, recall, etc., there are pros and cons. Mainly the spay and neuter is to prevent even more unwanted animals due to the general population of dog owners being irresponsible. >>> Early spay neuter is a disaster. Higher rates of cancer, behavioral issues, growth issues and more. Mutilation of a species because humans are too irresponsible to own them. SIMPLE! It's not just the "gangbangers" (racist, people should give you crap) whose dogs won't recall, it's also the soccer mom with the retractable leash who has no control over her animal, or the dog park people on their damn phones and their untrained dogs are escalating a situation until a preventable fight breaks out. >>> Agree with you on that, but your statement of “soccer mom” seems rather sexist if my comment of gangbangers is racist. However most soccer moms have labradoodles, not pitbulls. I’d rather be attacked by a labradoodle given the choice. As with any situation, even a litter of well-bred dogs will give you that one problem animal, whether it be with its health or mind. >not necessarily… It's not just shitty backyard breeders in "bad neighborhoods" (racist code speech, just admit it) the problem is everywhere in all demographics, from cute little yorkies bred to be "teacup" sized to the double muscled bully breeds and these poodle crosses. These "breeders" don't know what OFA ex-rays are, any of them and breed for the money, the look, or both. >>>> Why are you so intent on trying to label me as a racist when your speech is more inciting??? I believe your statement saying that “bad neighborhoods” are code speech seems quite racist in an of itself. There are plenty of people of all races that are to blame, and I’m not afraid to call them out, irrelevant of color, nationality or any other factor. I’m not afraid to call out people who do hard to dogs. I’ve spent a long time working with shetlers and see the hard work they do. Personally owned and loved both rescue dogs and pure breds. Neither is better. ALso look up my background in the dogs I’ve worked with and you may rethink your positions…. You can do better than to indulge your biases. >>> I have no biases, except stupidity!

It seems like Mr. Cabral and Mr. Ritland are as far to the right side of this argument as PETA is to the left. The only time the two sides agree is their disdain for the average pet dog and pet dog owner. Unfortunately most dogs in the US are pet dogs. There needs to be more education for the general public about how to raise and care for a good pet dog. Local pet dog obedience programs do more to keep dogs in their homes then the two of you do.
