My wife and I were dining out in New Orleans, when she got an odd look on her face and said quietly, "Johnny Joey Jones is sitting right behind you." I didn't want to interrupt his evening out, but casually looked over my shoulder and he was right there. He left the table a few minutes later (Yes, he walked away with no assistance, but with a bit of a limp.) and when he returned, I waited until he sat down and took the opportunity to thank him for his service and his sacrifice. His response was that it was his honor and privilege. Imagine after what he'd gone through to still consider it a privilege to have served his country. He was there for his wife's birthday party with family and friends. We introduced ourselves and spouses and after just a few moments of chit chat we both finished our meals and went our separate ways. He was truly a gentleman, a nice guy and obviously, a patriot.

I'm not EOD but in my former job capacity (Army) I traveled to the EOD school to see what they do and how they train. Huge appreciation for what these brave men and women do day in and day out in the homeland and on the battlefield! Something for Mike to consider, "Every year, on the first Saturday in May, the EOD Memorial Ceremony is held to commemorate fallen EOD technicians to recognize and preserve the legacy of the service and sacrifices of our fallen warriors and their families." Thanks Johnny Joey Jones for your inspirational words, service, and sacrifice.

Mike, thank you for the truly amazing privilege of watching this interview. I have been a JJJ fan for several years, but I now have new, deep respect and gratitude for Joey, his service and his sacrifice. His humble character, his love of his brothers and sisters and his unwavering humor stand as a lesson to us all. I am 71 years young and I long for the times when my patriotism and love of this country were much more commonplace. We can have disagreements, we can be of different races, etc, but we are Americans above all else, and Joey reminds us of how blessed we are. Thanks again for this interview. Currently reading and enjoying The Way I Heard It.

I agree with you whole heartedly. I'm younger than you (only 70). I joined the Navy as a lost soul looking for a place to matter when others were finding ways to avoid the draft. Even way back then I tried to explain to people how great our nation is, at least at that time. Having walked the streets of Italy and seeing hammer and sickle painted on the walls and not feeling real safe, it made me love our country even more. I realize there are + and - to a professional military, but in may ways I feel a real disservice was done to generations when the draft was abolished.

Thanks to both commentators, and Joey. For your service, sacrifice, honor, and integrity. And I too, long for the days when school kids were proudly saying the Pledge of Allegiance, with their hands over heart, facing an American Flag, being held out by the teacher. When we were passing down the value of our unique nation's specialty in the world.

Thank you for your service, sir. My cousin's husband, Donald Coats, served 28 years in the Air Force and served in Vietnam. He died on Veteran's Day 7 years ago. My church had an evangelist by the name of Tim Lee to preach a revival several times. On his last day in Vietnam he volunteered to do the mine sweep and lost both of his legs. Brother Tim asked God that if he'd let him live he would serve the Lord the rest of his life and he has. Many souls have been saved.

Mike that is one of the best shows I have seen on your show. That’s the kind of media or show that instills in me. I will remember that show because I have family members that served in the Marines. They also have been through similar events serving both Iraq and afghan war. One of our family members became a drug addicted and ended up in prison. He was released from prison and became a Christian and followed the lord. He now is couple semester from receiving his Master degree in physiology. He is helping veterans with help and helping all sorts of people now with PDST, not sure what the acronym is, but his making a difference. He has appeared on the Today show and continues to do speeches throughout the USA. Keep up the great work.

My amps were from severe burns and I may not ever walk in prosthetics but people like Joey give me hope/motivation to not give up, and, I hope everyone gets something from this mans messages. I also shouldve died in the wreck I was in. It broke about 3 dozen bones, left lung collasped, dislocated several major joints, shattered my pelvis, 3rd degree burns on 50% of my body, had my legs and manhood amputated from the burns, etc. Never give up!

This Episode came out on my birthday... I just listened to it because I loved this segment on your YT channel, Mike. BUT WOW, the ending was hard to get through.... I have so many friends who are not the same after serving in Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan, I myself have felt very guilty for not signing up to be with many of them to serve our nation.... And here we are again, 30 years later, involved in another conflict that has all the earmarks of why we were there in the early 90's.... yet this one, has a broader significance, it's going global and it is frightening.

Johnny Joey Jones is a true American hero and symbolizes everything that is great about the United States. Caring for the people that are CARING FOR HIM Is a virtue that is not lost in all of this madness in this crazy world. With that said, my Dad fought in Patton's Third Army, 4th Armored Division from the time they broke out of the Normandy beach head until he ended up in Czechoslovakia. As a 19 year old kid, he saw the worst horrors that man can do to another human being. As usual, he never talked about any of this with us kids but my Mom, my Dad's younger brother and sister were given a little peek into his nightmares. I literally interrupted one back in the early 1980's. It was a Saturday afternoon and I had just got back from diving practice at high school. I got home, looked around and saw my Dad crashed in his bedroom so I went to my bedroom to sort out my towels and start a load of laundry. I had been home for about a hour when I heard my Dad start yelling something about someone named Tommy. "Tommy, I'm here! Tommy, I got you, I'm here, just hang on! Tommy, I'm here!" I went into my parent's bedroom and gently stirred him awake, remembering the stories of my grandmother getting tossed across the room when she tried to wake him from nightmares when he first got back from the war in 1946. He slowly shook off the sleep/nightmare and asked me how long I'd been home from practice. I said about an hour, maybe longer. He kicked into gear after hearing that and was like, "Mom put us in charge of making dinner so we better get moving!" And so we did, preparing the salad, the steaks and a side of rice. While we were doing this, I asked him about this "Tommy" guy and why he needed your help. He just mumbled a few words and kept at the task of making Saturday night dinner. It wasn't until he passed away five years later that I found out who "Tommy" was from my Dad's little sister, Betsy. She told me that Tommy was a guy in my Dad's battalion - my Dad was a scout with the 66th Armored Field Artillery Battalion - and that Tommy was literally cut in half by something called an M42. Tommy was dying and didn't want to die alone so my Dad was there to make sure this other young kid didn't die alone in some crummy forest in northern France. I remember watching war movies with my Dad and he said that the sound that the m42 or MG 42 made was like no other sound in battle. That and along with the Buchenwald concentration camp story shook me to my very core...

God bless your papas memory and all he did for our country. I truly wished stories like this could be shared with all our young folks everywhere so they might know freedom isn't free and we should honor the true sacrifices that have been made with honor and respect. Blessings to you and yours.

You and this man JJJ are the reason I love America. You both in your own ways are the best of what makes America a place of valor. Thanks for interviewing this humble young man. You keep giving to the world and it is a joy to listen to and watch.

I was a Marine EOD Tech too. I just pray I would have had the same strength and positive attitude this Brother Marine has, if that same thing happened to me. God bless you always Brother. Semper Fi.

What a great interview with JJ. Joey, you are not luck, you are blessed as God has a reason for why you are still here on this earth. You are a most precious person, who thank goodness, has not only brains, but common sense and use both in the best way. Semper Fi from this WM.
