Mike, please please please get some more eyes on bat rehabbing!! This pup season has been SO SO hard, Bat World Sanctuary really needs more eyes, and you'd be the PERFECT person, especially with this new series!!! Please help us educate people about these little guys, they need it so badly this year!

I’m fortunate to be able to say that there are several bats that live nearby; and they come out in the evening and eat mosquitoes. I can see them flying around the area (I’m on 6 acres so my back yard is fairly large); and sometimes even hear their sonar chirps.
@KB-ke3fi Жыл бұрын
Yes....and go to Austin Texas. It has the largest bat colony in the United States, and Brazoria county in south Texas has the largest bird migrating area in the entire world.

Maybe those bats should pull themselves up by their bootstraps.
@edoboleyn2 ай бұрын
Elli - That would be great. You should email him. The bats need our help. Whole populations are being destroyed by white nose virus introduced from the Old World, they’re being decimated by wind farms, and they were even blamed for a pandemic! Bats are essential to insect control. Replacing lost bat populations with pesticides and insecticides costs farmers and consumers millions.

Absolutely chuffed about Mike spending time with John and the young people who are obviously interested in birds. Love how John calls himself a “bird nerd” and rolls with this. But I want to say a huge Thank you to John’s SISTER who introduced him to birds. Mike, you’re the BEST, of course. Warm, accessible, funny and just plain delightful. The Safety Meetings are sublime! 😂

I am a songbird and raptor wildlife rehabber with Virginia, so I was very excited to see this episode! I was actually down at NCU in January for my wildlife training classes I needed to keep my permit, but did not know about this museum. I would love more information on how to break into this field of work, since as a rehabber, we do not get paid for the work we do. We do it all out of the kindness of our hearts and for the animals...but any sort of paid work would be nice as well! Would anyone know more about this?
@nelvabohannan1926 Жыл бұрын
Very good episode. I know a number of years ago when you were doing the first installment of Dirty Jobs your folks had requested to come along with us to look at the endangered Red -Cockaded Woodpecker. I was a certified tree climber and permitted endangered bird technician for the U.S. Forest Service in the Southern Region. We did not get to do that episode with you but I am glad that you found someone as passionate about birding and research as we were. Mike, continue the great work of finding passionate people who are more concerned about the overall good than they are about money. In this very self-serving world we need more unselfish folks to do the jobs that somebody has to do in order to maintain our way of life and to help preserve the wildlife. Thanks so much!

Watching this brought back memories of one of my now deceased Friends ! William " Bill " Cochran aka. Wally Whom devoted much of his life to the study of Birds ! He is responsible for engineering very likely the first micro transmitters to be attached to the backs of Birds, to ascertain things such as Wing beats, Heart beats, and a system to track migrating birds as well ! Some may know of him, from these very works ! Too, he was responsible for aiding the U.S. Government in building a Satellite to compete with Russia's Sputnik program ! His many written article's on the subject of Birds can be found in Libraries around the World ! I was very fortunate that he considered me a Friend and colleague for many of our escapades ! Finally the place to ask this question. Is handling a wild bird dangerous in any way aside from the bird attacking? Disease? Contagious viruses or anything like that?

Must say from an academic perspective coming from someone who studied wildlife that my experience taking a ornithology taxonomy class is 10x more put together than the mammology counterpart. Sadly there seems to be a bit of a turf war involving the representation of classes of Animalia, with departments often favoring mammologists over ornithologists/herpetologists and it is honestly disguising. And many academic institutions can’t do a fraction of what this guy is doing but consider it the same. If you were to ask the people what’s the goal of the taxonomy, they would struggle to answer it the way as johns response of “ preserve records for people to study”
