This episode was one I truly loved. I just can't imagine the inspiration that drives this project I wish you could have divulged the cause of the decline in the population of the whooping crane. Knowing the root cause can help prevent future issues...ever heard of the projects surrounding the Pacific plastic island? The issues with goony birds eating the plastic? Sad to know our technology's cause issues with nature in a catastrophic way. Thank you Mike. For your work. For your ideals.

What amazing people! These are unsung heroes! Those dedicated to saving beautiful fauna and flora from what humans have done. In Australia koalas use to be found in high numbers. Now due to horrific bush fires in recent years, destruction of habitat due to land clearing and so many killed on the roads, they have become endangered!! I cannot bare to think of Australia without koalas! Yet there are people here, like those at Patuxtant Wildlfe Research, who dedicate their lives to helping these, and many other amazing wildlife, try and overcome the destruction of this planet by human beings. We all need to change and realise that without these animals (and plants) we will have no planet Earth!! Thank you so much Mike! Peace and Love from Australia

Mike, please tell me the experience of wrangling cranes smacked you with a flashback of when you had to manhandle an ostrich 😂 I mean you do have experience taking eggs from birds of multiple species, maybe not with a broom but still! Also I gotta say, im incredibly impressed at the lengths they go to to ensure the baby cranes don’t recognize them as human beings, that’s such a huge worry when it comes to releasing animals, that they go through putting a costume on and staying completely silent so they don’t recognize human voices, that’s just so wonderful. I was so happy watching that segment ❤ They’re doing incredible work and you can absolutely tell they’re all in it for the passion of saving their species, just with how informal all their names are and everything, that stuff isn’t what matters to them, it’s just saving them and doing it as amazingly wonderfully as possible ❤ OMG watching the clip of the cranes flying behind the ultralight was ACTUALLY incredible!!!!!! Just seeing the whole journey of what these people do and how hard they work for, what most people would say, is very little payoff, but honestly seeing those cranes form a full on flying V behind an ultralight manned by two people in crane costumes was so incredible, i can’t even imagine the pride they feel when they get to that stage and finally release them

Beautiful birds - great video. We have regular numbers of Sandhill cranes visiting our 40 acre property in Central Foothills of California - we have some minor wetlands in the winter, and they LOVE hanging out - the barn cats are smart enough to recognize they are NOT to be messed with. Edit - OKAY, the fact they teach them to fly and migrate is INCREDIBLE>

Maybe not as sexy but about 6 years into retirement I decided that my life experience in physics and radiation safety inspections and started a sheep farm to raise and recover a nearly extinct breed of sheep. It’s important work but I think every enterprise must be self sustaining. When we were told to file for government grants we refused and made a profitable business out of it. ‘Save the best, eat the rest’…a motto worthy of a thriving business.

Fun Fact about their close cousin the sandhill crane, as a kid in the 80s, while hunting wild pigs, with dogs in Central Florida, I witnessed my dog get killed by 2 of them. The birds jumped up, then used their beaks as a bayonet, hit a charging pit bull mix, 5 times in his chest. He bled out before we could get to the Vet Hospital to save him. I gained valuable info that day about how deadly they can be. The dog, had broke the leash, & charged at the bird's. He deserved it, somewhat. But still, new found respect for these birds was born..

Don't know when Patuxent started this program but the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, Wi. started working on Whoopers in the 80's or before. A friend of mine, Terry Kohler and his wife, used to fly to Alaska in their plane to pick up eggs. There is youtube film of the program director dressed as a Whooper doing the mating dance trying to induce females to ovulate so they could be bred. I have seen Whoopers at the Last Mountain Lake National Refuge in Saskatchewan when up there duck and goose hunting. The locals tell very few people that the birds are there because they don't want to bother them. I am one of the fortunate few visitors that is told where they are and can use spotting scopes to observe.
@rerolley Жыл бұрын
The breeding program at Patuxent started in 1967. It was shut down in 2017. Some of the birds were transferred to ICF. The birds that the Kohler's were getting from Alaska were Trumpeter Swans.
