Smallcreeps Day is a masterpiece. Mike should release a digitally remastered version that includes Compression. That final riff is nothing short of chilling & superb

There is news from a week ago that Smallcreep's Day will soon (end of March 2022) be re-released on a CD. Will it include this song is not known though. This will be done by an independent label, so Mike has probably little to do with decisions what to include.

That's fabulous news mate. Its a big shame Mike has little regard for the album. I don't know why. Its a first rate piece of work. No one duff song, & excellent performances from a group of seasoned professional musicians, especially Ant on keyboards,.

The outro is from the Lamb rehearsals 1973...note for note! The idea didn't make it to the album in any form. But worthy to keep for personal use sometime in the future...

This song is one of the main reasons I bought the "Harvest of the Heart" collection by Anthony Phillips, the only CD release the song ever had. Of course, I love Ant's music a lot. But this one is a forgotten masterpiece, just pure brilliance. Should definitely be included as a bonus track on the CD reissue of Smallcreep's Day, which sadly isn't the case.

Ive heard this out take somewhere before and so wish I could buy this version of Small Creeps on vinyl or CD. I remember buying the album the day it came out , still have my copy and its always been in my top 10 albums of all time. Timeless songs, wonderful playing and of course stellar drumming from Mr. Simon Phillips!

Lovely Beatlesesque track from the Smallcreep sessions - absolutely love those arpeggios (a bit of Harrison's "Something", a bit of Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth") - and the dark, dramatic ending.

The mix seems a little rough, but I really like this. I've been a huge fan of "Smallcreep's Day" since the mid 80s, so it's a real treat to hear something "new" from it. I can see why they left it off, though. That "jam" at the end feels tacked on, maybe because it was.

I agree the jam doesnt sound like the same session. It shows how great Genesis was that they threw that out...damn. This is my favorite solo album from the whole lot.

@@ifly65 Well, I think I like it, it sounds like an alternative time where Steve Hackett stayed in Genesis in late 70s. In fact it was composed in 1973 and recorded as an impro session where Phil tries the drum pattern and Tony and Steve timidly plays over.

This was an out take from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway sessions. And yes, they were influenced by Led Zeppelin, especially with "Kashmir ". The Lamb rehearsals started at Headly Grange which is the same place as many of the Led Zep recordings are from.

Would anyone like to hazard a guess as to where this track might be, in the running order of "Smallcreep''s Day"?

For me it depends on whether you're using the UK or US track order (UK putting the Smallcreep's suite as the first half of the album, US swapping the sides so the album ends with the Smallcreep's suite). For the UK tracklist I'd put it after Overnight Job to close out the album, and for the US tracklist I'd put it between Overnight Job and Between the Tick and the Tock.

Outside of a very rare fan club CD, the place it can be gotten on CD from is the Harvest of the Heart - An Anthology compilation by Anthony Phillips (as he plays keyboards on this track and the Smallcreep's Day album sessions). Note that the streaming versions of this album omits it sadly, so you'd need to get a physical copy to have a version with the track on it.
