This guy was the best! For me it always was The Mike Smith 5. Mike Smith (a name hardly anyone remembers) was one of the greatest vocalists in rock. The DC5 were influences on many groups that came later including The Ramones and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band. For me Mike Smith and Eric Burden were the two best UK male vocalists of that era. Others, (Jagger, Ray Davies, Daltry, Beatles, Manfred Mann's Paul Jones, etc) may have been better "performers" but those two were the best singers! (Although Paul Jones is very seriously underrated and comes in at #3.)

It's funny because i'm only 53 and i discovered the DC-5 at the age of 12. This was in 1980, long after that the 1960s flew by and i would jump on my bed matress, when i heard this song, on AM oldies radio stations. Just before i got to your comment, i thought to myself that this quartet should have been called The Mike Smith Five. You took the words right out of my mouth. Thanks Johnny Montréal Canada.

Has Dave Clark ever given a solo concert? Can he sing or play? It seems all he ever did was get rich off of Mike Smith's talents.
@kennorris25526 жыл бұрын
Enrico, No! He was a drummer and not really a vocal standout, so a solo concert would not have been his thing...or even possible. He was first and foremost a manager of other talent. In many ways DC was VERY lucky to have found and recruited Mike Smith who could play keyboards, write hit songs and belt out incredible vocal leads.
@conn0rth4 жыл бұрын
You need musical talent to give a solo concert. Dave had none, just money greed and that doesn't transfer to the stage

Dave Clark, formed , managed and got a recording contact for 5 guys doing manual labor. It was his band and he was a great drummer regardless of what you have heard. Where did you hear that ? Dave sat by Mike's side at the hospital until he died. Dave and Mike were friends all their lives. Mike got songwriting and other royalties from their music. What he did with it, only he knows. Dave invested his money and promoted other upcoming stars including Freddie Mercury. Mike had a nice home and luxury cars. I can't see Dave not helping Mike if he needed it. Maybe Mike overextended himself financially. Dave Clark is a better person than that and he deserves more respect than he gets.

One of the greatest voices of the 60's should have been a major voice of the 70's, 80's and 90's, except that Dave Clark, who had total control of the music, refused to release any DC5 material for almost 20 years, at which time, the group had gone from being household names to obscurity. Clark's selfishness and refusal to listen to DC5 fans (who were begging to have access to the music0 seriously chocked any popularity (and resulting proceeds). He made money, the rest of the group didn't. Mike Smith should have been right up there with the likes of Joe Cocker, Jack Bruce, Jon Anderson, and yes, even Lemmy. He had that kind of voice.

DAVE CLARK ENDED UP VERY RICH, MIKE SMITH WHO WAS REALLY THE LEADER ENDED UP WITH PRACTICALLY NOTHING, I DON'T FRIGGIN GET IT
@kennorris25525 жыл бұрын
DC got rich by forming the band, recognizing and bringing in Mike who he saw as a talented vocalist, keyboardist and who's musical background and talent included writing. He also took his business acumen (lacking from virtually every other band in that period) and applied it to getting gigs, making studio arrangements and eventually into recording deals which is were the wealth began. He then learned how to get by behind a set of drums and produce not just records but a "sound" that would make the band a success. There are many things to shake a finger at in DC's handling of things, including taking credit and money for music creation which was not his, but you cannot say he did "nothing".

@@kennorris2552 One thing I'm glad DC did was to finally unlock the vault of their great music. He kept a tight lid on all of it for too many years. Dave Clark was a brilliant businessman. He paid the members a salary and leased the songs for five years after which ownership went back to him. He was probably the only one of the British invasion bands who avoided getting ripped off.Paul McCartney said he well remembered Dave telling him what to do business wise but if fell on deaf ears. To this day McCartney does not own the Beatles catalog. True Dave should have shared more with the band members but at least he got rich. He has proven his business acumen as an executive with Amazon as well.
