Mike sang the lead as well as played keyboards for many Dave Clark Five hit records. Here he performs 'Any Way You Want It' with his band, Mike Smith's Rock Engine live at the Cannery Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas in August of 2003.

I bought two tickets to his show in Chicago. My wife couldn't make it at the last minute but my co-worker, who must have been 20 years younger, said he would go with me. The only music I knew he would go to was the opera, but I guess he felt sorry for me. There was no way in heck he knew who Mike Smith was. So he came with me and his wife came to. To my surprise his wife really got into the music. She actuality stood up and started dancing. Mike Smith saw her, pointed his finger at her and waved. On the drive home his wife told me that she was so amazed that some old dude was singing punk rock songs like "any way you want it". I told her "that was Mike Smith - he sang the original songs".

GREAT to see the legendary Mike Smith of the DC5! He could still rock in this strong performance. So sad that he and Denis had passed away before the DC5 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but they were there in spirit on that VERY special night.
@fangirllinda Жыл бұрын
@Doug Celeste to be sure, but at least they knew they were being inducted. They were told in 2006 ( just before Denis passed away)that they were going to be part of the “class of 2007” but were bumped in favor of someone else. Then again in Dec 2007, when they were reconsidered for 2008,Mike posted on his blog that he was thrilled about it. Bittersweet. You could hear the excitement in his words... wish I had printed it out!
@DougCeleste Жыл бұрын
@@fangirllinda Yes, glad that Mike and Denis knew that they were going to be inducted before they died but the DC5 should have been inducted many years earlier when they were all alive. Yes, they were fondly remembered on that night of induction. Nice to see Denis's sons in the audience but Dave Clark should have had them stand up when they were announced to the crowd as the audience applauded. Both sons had tears in their eyes. Glad Rick was there before he died of his lung disease but he could be seen laboring in his breathing which was quite sad, indeed. Now, only Dave and Lenny survive but we will always cherish the fond memories and joy that the DC5 have given us.

Technically, ALL of the DC5 performances, not including TV, were performed live. They played their instruments as witnessed by me from the floor in front of the stage. There was likely one or maybe two backing tracks occasionally inserted into the shows but I still give them credit for a 'live' show. (I am fairly certain the instrumental 'Five By Five' required a recorded percussion track. If anything else was added, it got by me.)

After DC 5 split, he should have formed a rock band in the 70’s. Would have blown away some of the bands around at that time that we’re enjoying worldwide fame. Looking back at some of the old videos, I have to say he was vastly underrated, right up there with the best vocalists of the period.

One of my all time top-10 songs, and one of my all time top two rock singers. He and Lennon had the best pipes for the genre. How old was he here....easily mid-60's or older, I'm guessing? The dude STILL HAD IT. Usually, at least it seems to me, bringing back these old rockers for another shot at the microphone is an embarrassing disaster. But ol' Mike...for real....he still has it. I'm 62, and I never was much of a singer, but I can't even imagine putting my voice out in front of people the way I sound now. And I'm in relatively good shape and health...thank the Good Lord. John Lennon got all the money and all the love. Mike Smith, imo....was shoulder-to-shoulder his equal as a guy belting out the rock songs. In fact...that entire band back then....the Dave Clark 5....just kicked ass, period. What a joy to be able to see this video....thank you dc5x5 for the upload! RIP Mike....and your band mates that have passed as well. Your work was stellar. And I never heard a negative word about any of 'em....no political grandstanding, major law-breaking scandals....etc. Yeah, I guess you can tell I'm a big fan, huh? lol. joel in ariz.

dail, to be clear I am fan as you are. I know quite a bit about the band's history and knew Mike briefly which is how I was able to make this recording. My dc5x5 gmail address is just one I selected decades ago. But to answer your question, Mike slipped away at the age of 64 back in 2008. I agree with all you said including Mike's lack of wealth despite his musical lead role in the band...he wrote, played keyboard and sang lead on virtually all the group's hits. That part is sad, even now. Trust me. Someone needs to write the book on this band.

Alex, Mike had a rough few years leading up to his finally deciding to get out there and start it up again. His son had drowned the year before he got his band together and his finances were not in good shape. Before that, DC made it difficult to impossible for Mike to perform even the music he had written as he had sold all rights to DC. There is a lot to the story, but the world is better for those couple of years that he did break away and just did it.
@alexyamach36357 жыл бұрын
To DC5X5 My understanding is that it doesn't matter who owns the rights to a song. A performer can sing in concert any song they want to. All concert venue owners pay for a universal song performance contract fee to ASCAP each year, that allows performers to perform any song that ASCAP holds the rights to at their venue. The venue owner is required to submit a list of songs performed to ASCAP so that the songwriters get their money from the ASCAP fees the venue owners pay. The performers never pay for the songs they sing in concert. If ASCAP does not hold the rights to a song, the venue owner will have to pay the other company that holds the rights to it if it is performed by the artist. So Dave Clark shouldn't have been able to prevent Mike from performing the DC5 songs. The songwriter not being a member of ASCAP might prevent a certain song from being performed.
