This song will always be a timely and current song. I love the part that says "So we open up a quarrel , Between the present and the past. We only sacrifice the future. It's the bitterness that lasts". This is what becomes of arguing about present, & the past and not having an open mind at all. We only accomplish ruining the future. Loved watching with you!

Life is not like the movies, when you can have a poignant death bed talk with someone. In my case, I got to Dad’s hospital room before he passed, but he was too out of it to say anything meaningful. Fortunately I had earlier connected heart to heart during a good phone chat.

A father son story......the father wanting x for his son and pushing him for it, the son growing up with that pressure and realizi g he doesn't want x , but y instead.....The conflict that ensues between them...the father's passing before a reconcilation can be made, and the regret therein. All being realised by the son as he brings up his own child.. That's my take on it.

The song was written by songwriter B.A. Robertson and Mike Rutherford. It was about both of them losing their fathers before their first child was born, and also some unresolved issues. Mike Rutherford said the song wouldn't have worked if Paul Carrack didn't sing it, because Paul lost his father when he was 11, so it added more emotion to his vocals. I believe Elton John said in a Rolling Stone interview that this is probably the best song ever written.

The idea of generations blaming the ones before I think has two levels of meaning. First, people like to criticize or blame current generations for making a mess of the world; but at the same time, who raised and taught that current generation? It's the parents, it's the adults, teachers, leaders, etc. from the generation before. In a sense, the previous generation didn't do well enough to teach the later generations how to do better than they did. Secondly, on a deeper individual level, Some people grow resentful that their parents didn't raise them right or show them love because they didn't turn out okay. Kids get messed up because their parents were, and this is understated, "not perfect", and kids pay the price for it as adults. At a young age, we are prone to traumas, fears, loss of innocence, and misguidance from the adults that surround us. We are the results and product of the habits our parents have demonstrated, both good and bad. There's also genetics: addiction, mental health, sickness. Some people have learned to accept that their parents weren't perfect and love them anyway, and some never do and regret it when it's too late.

The lead singer, the great Paul Carrack, sang lead on Tempted when he was in Squeeze and How Long by Ace. In the 60s there was a phrase, "Don't trust anyone over 30"! It was very much a youth culture and young people protested the "Establishment". I am now grateful that my elders didn't laugh in my face when I was younger and spouting off. Having lived longer and learned a lot, I try to give young people the same space to express themselves and grow. Clearly Mike's relationship with his father was strained because they didn't see eye to eye. I think that's what that lyric meant.

I saw the Mechanics at the Royal Albert Hall in 2019. They have a different line-up now: Andrew Roachford (who had his own hits as just 'Roachford') and Tim Howar are now the vocalists, but Mike is still there on guitar of course. He's such an unassuming character, hardly said a word despite being such a superstar. It was a terrific concert and I hope they come back soon, because I'll pay for a better seat (some of the sightlines at the RAH aren't so good*). I think it was Tim who sang lead on The Living Years - no one can match Paul Carrack but he did the song proud. They have lots of good songs - Over My Shoulder, Silent Running, Beggar On A Beach of Gold, Another Cup of Coffee. They had a new album out in 2017, with the new line-up, called Let Me Fly, and the title track is pretty good. Must listen to that album again as Let Me Fly is the only one I remember. I think I agree with some of the comments previously, the first line caught your attention and maybe you missed the full meaning of the song. Canihavesome sums it up perfectly. *Meaning I caught occasional glimpses of Mike Rutherford's head.

Chad, what to say. When it came out, this song encouraged me to talk to my father back in the '90's, but not so much with my manipulative mother (I was bitter). But by the time I came around to her, she'd had a big stroke and the person who she was - was gone. I'd left it too long. Generations. BIG shift from the '60's on; the older generation then seen as rule-bound, rather stupid (not "with it" - can't tune their TV properly themselves). Technology shifts are so much slower now (more of the same, better, cheaper, smaller). Anyone born in 1880 and lived to 90 would have seen - rise of telephone, cars, electric lighting, recorded music, aeroplanes, mass public education, industrialised / mechanised warfare, home appliances (washing, vacuum), radio, cinema, antibiotics, atomic weapons, computers, TV, lasers, spaceflight and going to the Moon (to the point the public was bored by Apollo 15). Anyone who'd grown up 30 years before seemed absolutely stuck in the mud and not up to things. But we seem to only have gained the internet in the last 30 years, plus the marriage of computers and everything else (like phones and music). TVs have got big; um what else is really new? No-one figured out how flying saucers work yet? Interestingly big social shifts affects music, especially the instruments used. But... we have had basically the same band set up since the late 1940's; a sign of a slow-down of change. Each generation looses view of the situation of the people before. Example: Listen to Beatles "Eleanor Rigby" - and watch the Yellow Submarine movie section for that song. You see images of the old and new; the past so tired and the new so bright. If you do watch that vid, look for the "Eleanors" eating chocolates in clothes 40 years out of date. As a child in the '60's I met many couples like that (it's quite an accurate portrayal) - sisters, who had never married, because there were no men. Quietly, Eleanor Rigby's sub-text is anti-war. Would you have gotten that unless it had been pointed out? I met these women, so know their stories. Watch "Oh! What a Lovely War - Ending Sequence" on YT from about the 3 minute mark. That's why Eleanor had no husband - an entire continent grew up trapped in that. All lost in time. Music - a change in tempo? Um have you done "Firestarter" by The Prodigy yet?? Growing up in the 60's there was a great revolution going on. The younger generation was being taught to question (i.e. BLAME) the "man" (i.e. older generation). This led to them blaming their ancestors for the assumed mess they had inherited. The Vietnam War had a lot to do with that philosophy. There were some of us who respected and honored those who went before and we still do. Unfortunately, many of that generation did not and thus the term used here.

Mike Rutherford... Think 'Genesis'. :) As to the 'Future generations blame the one before...' lyric, I liken it to something I heard my Dad say once. 'When a child, a Dad is the smartest man we know, when a teen a Dad's brains fall out and he becomes an idiot. But you get to be 25 and Dad seems to be getting his brains back. And by the time you hit middle age you realize that 'the old man' really knew what he was talking about all along!" Now that I'm, 60+ and Dad is long gone, I wish to hell I could pick his brains on a daily basis and share my thoughts with him as a sounding board... :)

Mike and the Mechanics are a wonderful group with many great songs. This is the only song in their catalogue like this…in the sense that’s it’s a profound song but you don’t want to listen to it very often. It’s the only one of theirs that I skip, for the simple reason that’s it’s sad. Otherwise, you’ve been given some excellent suggestions for delving deeper. I hope you do!

Mike Rutherford is the most under-rated member of Genesis. His lyrics are/were strong and heartfelt. (those scenes are Mike and his son) People still don't talk about ideas (or history) that makes us uncomfortable. It would seem this message is universal. History was written because it took place. It was the generations before that set the path we are on. When we can see important things were glossed over, ignored, or distorted, it can make the current generation angry. Being aware is a process.

About "blaming" the generation before. Back then, the biggest things that they were talking about were probably the end of the cold war (a lot of us younger folks probably thought the cold war should never have happened), apartheid still existed in South Africa and younger people were trying to get our governments, corporations, and entertainers to boycott South Africa until they ended that unfair system, while older people just wanted to keep making money off South Africa. We also knew about climate change back then, and younger people wanted to do something to alleviate it or slow it down, but older people tended to want to deny it was even happening or that if it was happening, that humans had no part in it. You can see that hasn't changed. There have always been big political differences between generations, and they still exist today.

I can be wrong, but it seems to me that the new generation is just programed different spiritually, and not holding on to the baggage of traditional thinking of guilt. There's a lot of technology one can consume themselves in that we didn't have in the past.

You are thinking too much. You got stuck on the early lyric about blaming the generation before him. That was just a prelude to the problems he had with his dad. The conflict could be anything. The message is plain and simple, it's also in the title. You have problems with a loved one, resolve it NOW, because when they die it's too late and you're forever filled with regret. Resolve it while they are living.
