I have learned more about Coach Tomlin and been given greater insight into his coaching and leadership style than 1000 other interviews with him. I'm appreciative of Coach T's openness and forthrightness. In this interview he demonstrates not only what a great coach should be like, but what a great leader and human being should be like. I have always respected Mike Tomlin but seeing this intimate view of him has raised my respect into the stratosphere for him. Looking forward to seeing what the Steelers do this year and looking forward to the day when Mike Tomlin is awarded a gold jacket. I've been a lifelong Steelers fan and watched Tomlin his whole career with the team. I always wondered what magic he had to be able to get mediocre at best teams to overperform (and that's no diss to Tomlin or any of the squads he's had, that's just the way the NFL is designed, no team is supposed to always be good, the Pats dynasty was a freakish exception to the rule) and now hearing him talk and explain his philosophy in detail I get it, it isn't just that he's a dude that NFL players would run through a wall for, that's obviously part of it, but he's a master in a way I never really grasped until now and building a crazy level of chemistry (which is really impressive with some of the distractions the poor guy has had to deal with) to the point that elevated some of these teams to a higher level of play than they should reasonably have been able to see. That's an incredibly unique skill being able to forge a collective so strong they're able to play above and beyond what they should reasonably have been able to do. He might have his weak spots, like literally every other great coach, but holy shit I thought I got it before but watching this....it makes sense now. No wonder Tomlin is the one coach that basically everyone wants to play with at least once before they retire, I would too shit..

The fact he was able to get those mid-late 2010s teams with internal dysfunction going on averaging roughly 10 wins a season for 5 years straight is pretty damn remarkable. That right there is proof of how great a coach he is.
@caomhan842 жыл бұрын
It's a combination of being used to having consistent success (through winning seasons), yet falling short in the era of Belichick, Brady, and Peyton. REAL Steelers fans will, like the organization, stand by him. He just signed a new contract and you know that even if he goes 1-15 this year, the first without Ben, the organization is standing by him. The Rooneys don't fire. I'm too young to remember the decade-plus of no Superbowls under Noll, but I remember the lean years with Cowher. I remember the frustrations after the championship game losses, and the gnashing of teeth over "wasting" great teams. But Cowher never had a QB until Ben. If he had a QB, Cowher would've won 3 Superbowls. I still believe that. Tomlin has been GREAT at making mediocre teams great over a period of time with Ben. I think that if he had won that 2nd Superbowl, the squawking would be less. But....now he has to emulate what Cowher did: keep the team competitive without a QB. I think he can do it, but it might be a rough few years until he finds the right formula...but he can definitely do it.

I’m born and raised in Pittsburgh and definitely black and gold till I die BUT Tomlin is far from a great coach. We should have more rings if he were. His in game coaching has ALWAYS been horrible so longevity, due to Rooney offering stability, doesn’t make u great because had he been on any other team he would have been fired. Mean looks, and growling doesn’t make u a great coach Belichick owns him.

Muphuka, Belichick owned the entire LEAGUE with Brady running that offense. Tomlin’s in game adjustments and clock management have bothered me at times. I’ve been a Steelers fan all my life back to the great 70’s teams. But you’re lying to yourself & everyone else saying that the man isn’t a great coach & leader. The Rooney family realizes that, so you don’t have to. No losing seasons ain’t just a fluke.
