Adicka Adooki Yea, that’s true.... But regardless, Tyson post-Douglass before he went to prison was at his absolute best, nobody in heavyweight history would have defeated him just before he went to prison, when he was 24-25 years old and finally into his physical actual prime, he was just as much of an animal as he ever was before the loss. When he went to prison he was 41-1 with 37 knockouts. He was a monster. He should’ve retired after the loss to Lennox but kept goin to destroy his record & legacy even further because he needed a damn paycheck (because he was a blatant fucking idiot with his millions lol) just like so many other great fighters have done.... Don King & co. was the worst decision he ever made yes, but this was still when Tyson was at his best regardless. He did NOT in ANY way start to look “sloppy” like some of these morons have tried to insinuate. He was still the most dangerous fighter to ever step in a ring at that point. I mean even when he came outta prison he was STILL a monster; he was still only 29 at the time & won the WBC belt (the heavyweight green belt was the most sought after title in fight sports back then, and really still is) almost right after he got out. The ONLY reason he lost to Holyfield is because he literally had a concussion from getting head-butted so many damn times. Holyfield was one of the dirtiest fighters in history, he head-butted his way to victory in every single one of his wins he ever had. That’s the entire reason Tyson finally bit him in their second fight, I mean in the first bout, Tyson was tearin him tf up until he caught the first good head-butt from him that dazed his vision all up. Holyfield was a bitch. A complete bitch. He got cheated tf out in both of those bouts. I would have bit his ass too if he head-butted me that many times and gave me a concussion, Tyson literally barely even knew where he was at, he just leaned forward and bit, it was like a fucking reaction. Actually watch it happen..... I’m not defending it, not at all. He’s still an idiot for doing that and getting himself DQ’d, but what I’m saying is Holyfield brought it on himself, and Tyson was the only one to feel consequences from it. Both his fights against him were complete bullshit.. and it was pretty much all downhill after that, once he hit 30 he started the downslant and fast. He did have a couple good knockouts after that, in 99-2000 or so, but once he got busted up by Lewis he just wasn’t even the same fighter anymore, that was the first fight where I actually did not see iron mike Tyson in the ring. It was just sad to watch as a huge Tyson buff.... But anyways, my point was just that yeah you were right in that statement, but he was still a monster for the next 5 or so years afterward. Right before he went to prison, like 1990-1991, after he’d been humbled and knew what it felt like to take an L, Tyson was thee most dangerous fighter to ever step into a ring. Period.

It did look like Williams could continue, but the stoppage was his own fault. After the fight, he said 2-3 times that the ref asked him if he was OK, so he put his hands up. For one, he didn't put his hands up. For two, why didn't he just say "I'm OK" when asked. It's almost as if he didn't want to continue -- because he knew he'd get his ass kicked -- and figured the easy way out was to blame the ref.

And you can really see it when they showed it in slow motion. He didn't want to fight anymore but he also didn't want to look like he was a quitter. So when the ref said it was over of course he's going to protest. He didn't have to even shake his head watch the look he gave the ref right before he shook his head. I watched it live on HBO, 1984 at 15-0 Carl Williams beat Quick Tillis and at 16-0 lost close decision to 47-0 Holmes (in Holmes last consecutive victory as he went 48-0 and lost to Spinks) Williams stopped 13-0 Jesse Ferguson, and would get kayoed by Mike Weaver. Williams then stopped 16-1 Bert Cooper (who later became first to drop Evander in title match) and would beat Trevor Berbick and be 22-2 going into Tyson fight, which shows you how good and devastating Mike was. Agreed. Fighters protesting a stoppage are just trying to act tough after the fact. You can see that he's out on his feet. Plus, if the fight had continued, he would have been destroyed again in the next 20 seconds. It's not like it was a close fight or anything.

A bad decision by a referee that's usually pretty good. Williams was clearly not hurt that bad, but I think he made a little gesture that the referee mistook and used as a basis for stopping the fight. When Williams is up and the ref is counting, Williams shook his head very briefly, the way someone does to wake themselves or to 'shake off' a shot to the head. Exactly at the time Williams made that little gesture, the referee made his call to end the fight. Williams was more or less shaking his head as if to say, 'wow, that was a good shot', but he wasn't hurt very badly.

Exactly! Been watching this fight for years and saw what you saw, but could never articulate it quite right. Randy Newman made a rash decision. He should have given himself a second or two more to assess if williams was ready to fight. Refs do that all the time. Randy Newman is a good ref, but he blundered here. Plain and simple.

I see this often with fighters. They get knocked down, get back up, and just stand there looking at the Ref. They're told in the dressing room: you gotta put your hands up, tell the Ref you're ok, and walk to him if necessary. It's just straight up dumb if they don't. Why leave anything to chance? Regardless of the instructions, I'd be telling the Ref "I'm OK. I want to continue." And nodding my head & hitting my gloves together.
@Bryant19632 жыл бұрын
At the time Larry probably didn’t fully realize just how accurate he was on his opinion of how Tyson had changed, and was no longer really into the fights, like he had been previously under his original management, and before had made the huge mistake of getting tied to the boxing world’s biggest con artist “bloodsucking leech Don King” and “gold digger Robin Givens!” Because of Tyson‘s involvement with those two, his amazing boxing career was heading straight into the toilet!

That’s not true. He’s ready to go. Probably wouldn’t have mattered but you never know. Tyson never beat anybody who didn’t wilt and quit from Mitch greeen and Tony tucker ( before this fight. To Holyfield Lennox Williams and McBride. Evaluate all fighters the same way you do tyson. Everyone is unbeatable until they hit age 23. Ryan Garcia tank Davis. BENAVIDEZ. All washed up in there mid 20s Ryan Garcia was dropped against luke campbell. He’s out of his prime. He was 22-23. He’s the goat he’s squashing everyone. The funny thing is Garcia has won a fight and came back from adversity tyson is 0-6 If the referee a judges him as any other fighter and not special treatment he would have been 0-11 But mike was handled with kid gloves. Breaking arms. Jumping headbutts. Knocking Norris out after the bell sounded. Splattering an old referee as tyson wouldn’t engage. Even tyson older fight where he’s mid 30s. Which tyson is judged as a geriatric. But great today. Somehow. Watch how Lennox was treated getting points taken away for mike clinching and doing nothing. The Danny Williams fight is hilarious. The ref is tryin to dq Williams for hitting mikes body. But mike ended up just quitting before the ref could call the third point deduction Botha. Trying to break his arm. Repeatedly. Corners had to rush in. And prevent it along with security. Floyd and zab was similar. Floyd hit zab low. Roger ran in and attacked a fighter and corner. That’s an auntomatic dq. It would be like going over the rules and you spark out a trainer. But Floyd as mike were the biggest draws and had soecial privilege

Should not have stopped it. The fighters at this level shouldn’t have to do a song and dance to convince the ref that they’re able to continue on. Refs at this level should know the fighter, and rather than looking for evidence that they’re unable to continue in such an important fight, look for evidence instead that they are able to continue. He got up in time he was not wobbling he had his hands up, corner was not concerned. It was enough to let it go on, especially it being the 1st round of a heavyweight championship fight.

This was IRON Mike Tyson here. Why didn't he just go right into the fight with Evander Holyfield next instead of facing James Buster Douglas. He didn't need a warm up fight before Holyfield.
