I hate to say it, as it sounds like a little old man on droning on about Woodstock, but if you were not there, you just can't get it. He was young, very small for heavyweight (about 5'10"), often gave up 20-40 pounds, and several inches of reach to his opponents, and he just utterly laid down a reign of destruction and terror in boxing that has never been equaled in my lifetime. Glad I was around for it.

True. However, Tyson might be short but never a small guy during his boxing days. In the beginning of his career, he's already heavier than Holyfield at his heaviest. He can never compete at lower weight despite his short height, he's simply too massive.

How weird it is to hear the announcer talk about a 24 year old's 'skills eroding' in the first round To be past your prime at 24, like Tyson was a female gymnast It wasn't that his skills were eroding, just that he wasn't dedicated to defense and combinations like he had been, having fired the people he had his early success with and gone over to that sociopath King. At this point, the skills were still there, just success and fame and personal stuff effected him.

Most people don't realize that Tyson had a granite chin. I honestly don't feel Tyson was ever truly knocked out. Tyson had more of a stamina issue in the fights he lost. He was gassed and out of steam so he took the knockout. A prime Tyson in top shape had a granite chin.

Ron Jon I think Tyson's granite chin in his prime was best displayed against Douglas. He took some of the hardest punches I've seen and he got up. Arguably, it was a fast count and his knock out of Douglas was a long count (13 seconds). Nonetheless, Tyson got up after a brutal barrage of punches.

These two threw some serious bombs. Another element impressive in this fight was how Ruddock took some wicked body shots. I mean there were a few rounds where Tyson ripped into his body and he stayed in there. If Ruddock knew how to jab with consistency the outcome could have been different
@502waf
@502waf 9 жыл бұрын
+IndepenDRUM1 I don't think we should let the discussion over Tyson's form detract from the fact that Rudduck put up one heck of, a fight, taking and dishing out some big punches, while largely staying out of trouble. What I really admired about Ruddock's performance was how he was not intimidated by Tyson's power and aggression, he managed to stay very calm and collected even when hurt, which prevented Tyson from finishing him. I agree if he'd kept a decent jab going he could very likely have won on points. From Tyson's perspective, he still had his determination to win in this fight and kept going despite taking some punishment and no doubt being frustrated by Ruddock. Once Tyson got to the Holyfield fights I think he started to lose his desire for fighting and then started to lose heart and get frustrated when he couldn't dominate as he used to, that's when Tyson really became a shell of his former self in those later fights when you could tell his heart was no longer in it.. It's a shame he lost those who brought him to greatness and was brought down by King both in his boxing ability and financially screwed over. Two great fighters and a really entertaining bout.

in his fights with ruddock tyson was not the tyson he used to be when he had rooney in his corner. he was slow and started missing punches from his opponents. tyson didn't use to miss any punches before.

80% of these 'low blows' were on razors belt which was above his belly button meaning they were NOT low blows. I feel Tyson got unfair treatment here with the point deductions.

Yeah because Mills Lane is an idiot right? If only you'd been in the ring instead... Actually ML didn't call Mike on many of the low blows. Tyson knew exactly what he was doing, deserved a point deduction in the 1st fight too.

He wasn’t in his prime. He was getting worse quickly after the fight with spinks. He got hit way too much in this fight because he stopped doing the things Cus taught him.

@@Josh77600 Mike was declining at this point of time but he was still pretty damn good if he can beat Ruddock since Ruddock wasn't a joke at that time he was the most avoided contender in the HW division in the early 90s

This was a good tough fight on behalf of ruddock and tyson, they both took good shots. Tyson broke ruddock's jaw in this fight and razer continued. Holyfield would not of lasted with tyson from 86-91 he even declined a fight with tyson after the dougles bout he fought a 43year old george foreman instead, he chose to fight him when he was not iron mike anymore which anyone with a brain cell would have done.

Ruddock had some jaw but never followed through when he had Mike hurt. This is why I reckon Ali would have weathered Tyson's early pressure cos he had great jaw too. Often wonder how Frazier vs Tyson would have looked, one guy who wouldn't back off and give you an inch., would have been in Mike's face all the time although i reckon his defence wasn't as good so would have been a brutal but quick fight.

people always say Tyson fought nobodies before he won the title. Most up and comers do fight throguh a bunch of journeyman before they get big fights, Fact is he unified the belts. So he had to beat "somebody". I suppose folks willstill say they all sucked. Not his fault he fought who was available. Who did Lennix Lewis beat? Nobdy really. Then he "retired" rather than fight the younger Klitcshko brother because he was ...hurt. Oh and people point out Douglas. Rahman ko'd lewis. So I guess they all get 1 right? W. Klitcshko had Brewster.

***** Corey, if you knew anything about the subject you'd down Klitcshko for waiting so long to fight Lewis. The fact that Lewis fought him at all at that point (and won) is all praise for Lewis, not the other way around. I would agree that in the 80's Tyson was so good that he made somebody's look like nobody's. Tyson didn't fight like that in the 90's though and Lewis was something else - as has been the Klitcshko's.
