Buddy Holly could keep a crowd's attention due to the novelty of himself, the songs and the genre of rock 'n' roll itself (not to mention his flawless performance). Gary Busey was performing, albeit through the lens of a director's camera, for a 1978 audience. Maybe it would've been just as interesting if he mimicked Holly's stage performance, but I tend to believe that the moviegoers of 1978 might've found it a little lackluster. Seattle! I'm a Ballard man, myself!

It definitely brings tears to my eyes. Buddy is one of my all time favorites. I was born in 1965. The show Happy Days brought most of this great music to my life. I think this may have been one of the first movies I saw at a theater. Gary Busey was phenomenal as Buddy. This particular scene was done so well. They really represented the racial part very well.The people were able to tune themselves in to the music instead of just seeing white. Wonderful.

As a big Buddy Holly fan. Gary Busey gave the best performance by far of any who have tried since, and the best tribute, to such an icon. And to be singing live in his performances, shows his real talent. I watched the film on its first release, and never tire of watching it still. I love listening to his takes on all the Buddy Holly songs, but two that stand out for me personally are Maybe Baby and True Love Ways. 🎶🎵🎸

I had the great good fortune to be instrument tech on The Buddy Holly Story in Australia (2009) promoted by great friends David And Julie White... A fabulous tour opened on 3rd of February the 59th anniversary of Buddy's death. By Peggy Sue Gerron ( sadly now deceased ) a great trooper of a Lady, and a wonderful friend. Scott Cameron played a stunningly lookalike BUDDY, and absolutely took the part for his own!! Great days. This version was fabulous too, a fitting tribute to the great man..... Rave on!!

I had the amazingly good fortune to see Buddy & the crickets @ the O2 theater in Manchester U.K. in 1996, best dedicated show I ever went to. So tragic he was lost to the music world @ 23 such an early age, along with the Big Bopper, Ricky Vallance & others in that awful plane crash. The world lost a genius that fateful night. His music lives on, even the Beatles inspired by him.

Saw Gary once 25 years or so ago at the market on a quiet evening we were each there to just get a thing or two and he was just carrying around a bunch of that Hollywood stardom stuff kinda all over his aura. He looked at me and we just kinda visually greeted and I thought wow he looked at me. Cool 😎 was one of the few times I just won’t forget.

That's Don Stroud on drums. He's impressive. A solid character actor, usually playing the 'heavy". He was the deranged criminal in Coogan's Bluff, with Clint Eastwood, in the 70s. And many more. He's still with us, too!

Wasn’t had the performance(s) at the Surf but my family did drive out in the country to see the plane crash. I was not quite 11yo, but the memory has sure stick with me... seeing a small ball of wreckage way out in a corn field over 60years ago.

I was delivering a morning paper on Feb4 , 1959 on my birthday, the headlines said" Rock an Roll , Buddy Holly, Richey Vallens and the Big Bopper die in plane crash in clear lake Iowa. That was the end of Rock an Roll!

I just saw the movie this weekend for the first time. I never knew he died so suddenly & so young or don't remember. I was a very little girl at the time. I remember the music & songs of the late 50's which lasted into my teen years--heard them on the radio all the time. Mom was involved in running a private school for girls at that time so the radios were always blasting 50's music & there was dancing in the halls. Gary is nothing short of phenomenal in the film. I was so impressed.
