Power Screeding Concrete Floors, Yes or No, What are Your Thoughts?

Hey all,
In this video, we're pouring concrete for a basement floor. We use a power screed to screed the floor on these types of concrete floors.
I feel like it makes screeding a lot easier, especially if you use a water reducer in the mix and can pour a loose slump.
What are your thoughts on power screeds, vibra screeds, and battery screeds, and what are your favorite ones?
The MBW gas-operated power screed we used in this video made this pour go really easily. We like both their gas-powered screed and their battery screed.

I agree. I am in MI and didn't start until I was in my 30's. We did have some metal screeds but mostly used 2x4's. When were power screed invented? OH yeah, I started in 82

I also like that truck with the hoist for the machines to be lowered in basement and just on and off. Ingenious.

Just did a 11 ft high x 12" thick basement walls using those same forms they did on that foundation. Peace of mind with those forms with the huge amount of pressure they have to withstand. Lot of work. Love watching your vids.

It's about 40lbs. It doesn't sink if you keep moving

Personally I love hand striking off although the vib screed does make it nice to hand finish if you're not using a trowel machine we just started using a vibrascreed not sure but seems like you have to pour a little wetter

Mike, I am wondering how you order your mix? do ask for a 4" slump and ad water reducer to make it a 7" slump? Or do you ask for 7" slump with water reducer?

I ask for mid or high range water reducer. Depends if I want to pour a 6 (mid) or 7/8 (high). The Concrete shows up about a 4 or 5 and we add a little water to get it up to slump. It doesn't take much water when there's wr in the mix to increase the slump.

Hi Mike day, thank you for making these videos.... I have a question about this job.... after you bull floated floor, the guys power trowell the surface? With power trowell it is fine to not hand finish prior? Is this because there are no plumbing ect thru floor? Your guys wait until they can get on it with pwr trowell and touch up edges by hand?

Yes, power trowel only except for the edges.

Mike, i thought expansion felt needed to be put between the slab and the fondation walls? Is this only a prefference? Does certain conditions or code require it? Thanks for all the great content.

It's a good idea. We do it if it's on the plan. It's not in the specs on all our jobs.

Usually used for exterior applications because of freeze thaw cycles in the surrounding ground.

Watching these basement pours and I have to wonder where the egress points are. I don't see any. Most people partition off with walls to make different rooms, but no windows. I would hate to be in a basement and a fire break out and can't escape. I don't say anything about you Mike, but the builder or planner is the one making the decisions.

Do they actually use them as basements? I thought it was just a high crawlspace. Do double wides come with openings in the flloor for stairs? Would imagine it's a nice spot for all the mechanical's but no one would live down there?? Am I totally wrong on that?

Tried to post a link but there is a video of them rolling the double wide in place and they have 9 feet of headroom so the Jacks they use to lower it into place have enough room . And I would guess the waste drain is somewhere in the sidewalls capped off? Sure they would have the waste drain in place before they build the stem walls. I saw nothing in the floor when mike was pouring the floor.

Have you tried a magic screed from Allen engineering? I have used only them for 20 yrs.

Way too much water in that concrete mix, takes more time to dry, long time before you can power trowel. A stiffer slump mix is a little more work laying down but it dries quicker and you can finish power troweling by the end of the day and still have time for a cold one.

Search 'concrete water reducers'. This mix does not have too much water, but it looks that way.

That's not water. Plasticiser is added to the concrete. It's expensive but makes the concrete easier to work with. People aren't pouring 4 inch slumps anymore, too much work is involved.

My guy ur mud is so wet gheez I mean I know it helps pour it out but that’s too wet concrete start loosing strength when ur adding that much water
