Funny you brought up the song "i wanna get better" i listened to it on repeat in 2017 first time i tried to get sober. Now i am 4.5 years sober and grateful. What makes your video so worthwhile is that I always learn something new and gain insights into new tools...a lipping planer!...After a few different guns, a new compressor and lots of practice I am finally comfortable spraying nitrocellulose lacquer..Yes, it's a vertical learning curve. Another variable with spraying is the weather-humidity wreaks havoc when spraying nitro...so much to learn...so much fun! Thanks!!!

I appreciate the way you use MDF as a material. About 20 years ago I constructed a 16 foot work bench so that I could build a Murphy Rebel aircraft. A few people thought it wouldn't stand up. I preferred it over plywood because it was heavy and very flat. My workshop floor was terribly uneven, but a few shims here and there and it was perfectly level. I didn't paint it or coat it in any way to protect it, thinking it would be disassembled when the project was complete. When the main components of the aircraft were done, a friend of mine asked me if he could have half the table. He wanted to build another aircraft and already had an eight foot bench. He wound up building two planes. The half bench I had remaining is still in my shop. It's a little worse for wear today, but if I had properly protected it the way you do, it would be just fine. I've subscribed to your channel and enjoy your little apprentice. My little apprentice is now a father himself and has already built two houses. Cheers to you and your family.

@michaelparkinson48006 жыл бұрын
Love your work! A tip that my father-in-law gave me might be useful. In lieu of your very nice & expensive clamp collection to space the surface & laminate material, he kept a section of PVC pipe with aluminum shade blind slats. He'd apply the glue, let it tack up, then lay the slats on top. Next went the laminate, likewise with tacked glue, then he'd pull slats out & roll the material together with a J-roller. Would help keep your shiny clamps from occasionally getting laminate cement boogers all over them.
@MikeFarrington6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, great tip. I normally have a bunch of dowel rods on hand. I had used them for another project recently. The PVC is a really good idea because it will resist the glue pretty good.

Great video, superb production quality. Nice to see how a pro works. If you’re looking for a fantastic water-based finish that dries quickly (around 30 mins to dry each coat, a few days to fully cure) I can’t recommend enough the Sherwin Williams Kem Aqua Plus system. I struggled with the thinning process and drying times on all kinds of water-based finishes before I stumbled across KA+, which is designed specifically for this application, is KCMA rated, and comes ready to spray right out of the can. They only sell it in the commercial stores which blows my mind, they’d make a killing if they sold this to DIYers refinishing their own kitchen cabinets from their regular stores. I shoot it with a cheap 2-stage $125 Wagner HVLP gun/compressor kit and it comes out looking it was done by a pro.
@MikeFarrington5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I really like Kem Aqua as well. Problem is all the Sherwin Williams stores around me a horrible. I often ask and they tell me thats not something they sell. The closest commercial coatings store is an hour away. I ask if the local stores can order in for me... they tell me no. Total bummer.
@spindlenine5 жыл бұрын
Ah, glad you’ve discovered KA+ as well. Idk why Sherwin doesn’t do more with that product. Thinning latex and other finishes not designed for this purpose and trying to spray them ended up being a fool’s errand for me.
@MikeFarrington5 жыл бұрын
@@spindlenine I'm with ya. Cabinet Coat has been the only other finish I like. In some ways its a little better than KA, its closer to paint than a cabinet finish, despite what the names says, but it dries super hard, sprays good enough, and lays out great. The one advantage is that it can also be brushed, I have found KA doesn't brush well at all, which is great for those projects where some brushing is needed.
@spindlenine5 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I will have to check out Cabinet Coat. Being able to brush the finish could be handy. Does it come spray-ready or have to be thinned? KA+ indeed brushes terribly. I couldn’t believe how bad it was when I tested it out for brushing... great for its intended purpose in a spray gun, though.

"If you have an HVLP setup and you're struggling to spray water-based materials..." - Does that mean you're using HVLP or conventional guns? I have a conventional suction gun with a 2.0mm tip that I'm cleaning up and I'm going to start spraying water-bourne paints. I'm wondering if I'll need to thin the paint down at all. I would love to see a video with more detail of your painting methods!
@MikeFarrington5 жыл бұрын
I spray with both conventional and HVLP. I have a conventional gun that can spray epoxy, so I don't need to thin paint to get it to lay down. This was an experiment that I heard from a painter friend, the point of it was to get the stuff to dry faster, or its probably better to say cure faster. Two thick coats can take days to cure, two or three thin coats may dry faster. I'm not totally convinced at this point. Also, I wanted to show people that you can successfully thin water based paint and get really good results.

Hey Mike great job on the desk - your video couldn't have been more timely! I'd like to see you do a video on how you build your drawers using the Blum Tandem slides - I've never used them and recently ordered a few sets for a project. I have instructions but I would still like to see how you go about sizing your boxes for the slides in an efficient and accurate way. The instructions have very precise measurements down to the 1/32" in some cases. It would be great to hear your experience on how you size your drawers and manage tolerances. Keep up the good work!

Thank you. I will be doing a few hardware videos soon (next couple months). I don't know what instructions you have but I work with metric for the widths. Great job again, buddy. I can't seem to get away from lacquer-based finishing products, but you make the water-based ones look so good, I may just have to give them a chance. Or maybe not. I hate fixing what ain't broke. LOL
@MikeFarrington6 жыл бұрын
Honestly, solvent stuff is hard to beat. Its so easy to get good results. I am giving this water base thing a try. So far its more challenging, but I really like not dealing with solvents. If you have a good place to spray, I would say keep at it.

Appreciate the video as always! I would love to see your approach to installation. As a self taught amateur I’ve done some three-wall scribed builtins like this, and I’m betting you have a way more efficient workflow.
@MikeFarrington5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Installs are the hardest to film. I'm normally under a pretty tight deadline. I don't know about efficient, fitting large built ins on 3 sides is difficult, slow work no matter what.

You should have a look at the new Lamello zeta p2, might not have to use all the clamps in the boardroom

I am fully interested in the Zeta. Unfortunately, all my "tool" money is being saved for insulation and a heater that should come this spring.

Mike, long time listener first time caller. Big fan of watching you work it is my zen. I would like to get into carpentry myself as a hobby but don't know where to start with tools, literature and materials. I will be building a shop in the near future to tinker with projects. Somewhere in the ballpark of 40' x 50'. I'm a machinist and will be dedicating a portion of my shop to metal fab and automotive restoration. Part one of my question would be how much of my shop should I dedicate to wood, and part two what tools should I invest in? I wont be doing this for a living at least not as of right now, but being in a trade where good tools are essential, I can't break the bank. So if there are videos you can link to help out or maybe doing a video or simply replying would be awesome. Thanks for putting out great material and again pretty inspiring to get out and start on projects of my own.
@MikeFarrington6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I have no idea how much shop to dedicate, I'm biased so I would say as much as possible. I would look for used tools, thats what I did. I bought in this order, table saw, miter saw, small jointer, bandsaw, planer, drill press. I added a work bench and other various hand tools along the way like sanders routers etc.

I love every video you do. Not trying to blow smoke up your arse but you seem ultra efficient and the quality is top notch, I know the workshop and tools help but they’re useless without a skilled hand to operate. Another great build 👍
@MikeFarrington6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ben. Tools really do help, and I agree that it takes a certain skill set to use tools properly. With that said, I have plans to start showing alternate ways of doing things in future videos.

Love that song. If you haven't heard it there's a live version from, i think, the Stone Pony in NJ. I think it's a Spotify session possibly, and the whole live show is really good.

I like your finished ends with the mdf..., it's a nice detail. I was wondering if your spray white is colored matched to the white melamine. Can't stand most particle board melamine especially taping edges.
@MikeFarrington Жыл бұрын
I don't match the melamine, normally most white colors are close enough.
