As a teacher, I’ve always toyed with the idea of keeping my concealed carry in my bag. If a shooting ever happened at my school, I’d rather go to jail for possessing in an illegal area than be killed or worse, my students be killed. My main fear is it being discovered that I have it when there isn’t an emergency situation. So many things wrong with gun laws!
@TheGhostofUm2 жыл бұрын
Depending on where you live there are classes for an Enhanced Conceal Carry License which allows you to carry is most places that a normal carry license or Constitutional carry wouldn't allow. Your employers may not be terribly happy about it and you may be fired, but legally speaking you'd be in the clear.

I am 59 years old. In my lifetime, a plethora of laws & rules have been enacted that restrict the freedom of Americans when it comes to firearms. For the vast majority of my 59 years, there were very few shootings (especially "mass shootings") at schools. We had a rifle club at my high school. We brought guns to school and left them in the gunracks of our pickups. We handled Christmas gift guns (showing them off) after Christmas vacation. Nobody shot their classmates. Now after all of the "reasonable gun safety" laws, we have a rash of these horrible events. We have defective people. We have young men who do not care about themselves, so why would they care for anyone else? We have many young men taking prescribe psychoactive meds. MAny (most?) of the shooters are on such meds. The problem is NOT firearms.

I have over 2 decades of security experience and find that A lot of public and private institutions have always played down any effective security measures like armed guards and restrictive access be it for expense or inconvenience (screening is a hassle) not wanting to feel like their work place is a potentially dangerous space by having armed guards (what kind of message does that send to visitors or customers). People often feel that attacks are things that happen to others or that they are infrequent. They may temporarily worry about it when there is a very public high profile attack but they tend to have short memories. I would have no doubts that the majority of security officers in America are unarmed, under paid, under trained or inept to deal with a deadly threat like an advancing shooter.

As an alternative, parents could try to organize a homeschooling organization of some sort. Where the parents of multiple families in the community meet up once a week to discuss the material, and take care of any paperwork. Perhaps find a way to make the organization legit so that the kids have an actual paper to find work with. To be honest the education system is super messed up anyway, aside from the shootings, so it might be a good move. If the groups of kids are kept around 4-5 max for each home, overseen by their own parents (or their neighbor if the parent is unable to teach) they'll be a lot safer, and the community will be a lot stronger as a result of it.

@tonyrome55842 жыл бұрын
Mike, first I agree with everything you said and your OFF protocol. I just wanted to convey my experiences with two gun incidents back when I was attending a top Catholic High School in Ohio. When I was a sophomore (1964) I stopped to talk with with a buddy out front of the school where guys gathered before classes. While I was talking my eye caught sight of another guy next to me holding a pistol pointed at the back of another guy's head! I reacted grabbing arm of the potential shooter; pushing it barrel to the sky. Fortunately a guy on the other side of the attempted shooter also grabbed his arm while I stripped the gun out of the guy's hand. A few other other guys grabbed the asshole's arms and legs and drug him into the school office (kicking and screaming) where I put the loaded .25 auto Beretta on the counter in front of the assistant principal. The guy was immediately expelled and turned over to police. FYI, I had been trained in Jujitsu from 5th to 8th grades and had been been training in Judo since I started high school. In some ways I can't believe that I reacted that quickly, but I know all that training was the key to stopping the attack. The next year there was another incident where a student in study hall pulled out a gun and pointed it at a teacher (I was no there to see that incident). Luckily there were two football players sitting behind the "shooter" and they quickly disabled the idiot. So,this shit can happen at even one of the best schools in the city. A few minutes ago I saw a report that the Texas shooter entered the school unimpeded, the doors were left open (unlocked). He was not challenged by any security officer; just walked in, down the hall and into the classroom where he did all the killing!! The school administrators that allowed those doors to just sit there unlocked should be criminally liable!!!!

Do want to point out that the whole transgender thing is apparently misinformation -- it's two unrelated individuals who go by Sam and Sabrina. I do think that the solution is probably more towards doing away with ban zones and rotating SWAT through schools with additional funding. I say rotating in SWAT because I think the human tendency towards mediocrity will lead to any armed guards being mere security theater if things happen. Evidently, the school guard there was armed and did not engage the suspect until he was actually already in the school. Even better if the rotated in officers have kids going into that school. You'll fight like hell to take this guy out. Add in working dogs, looking at security around ingress points and better SOPs. That's the defensive side. On the proactive side, focus around better mental health practices. I saw a story about Louisiana dads going into schools and their presence made school violence go down. More coherent community structures built around the schools might restore what used to be (probably) provided by the church.

There was no CQB training unless you passed and joined the Emergency Service Unit. The unit normal compliment was roughly 180 members out of the force of 800. The ESU required higher standards and firearm proficiency. The department also consisted a 15 member Special Response Team (SRT), which is our SWAT. This team came from the ranks of the ESU and required higher standards. Right after the Columbine shooting the units received extensive active shooting training. However, public opinion and complacency that extensive training became yearly to maybe once every other or three years based on funding. Training is essential, when you don’t have it the results could be similar. Bunch of chickens running around without their heads.

@@Sikpoop101 Thank you for all of that information and I appreciate your 30 years having served in the PD. I come from 5 years active duty in the Infantry (Army) and we did a lot of CQB. In your opinion would CQB be a benefit for the departments as a whole? The reason I am asking is yes, you are absolutely correct that you can never have too much training. Do you think CQB should be the immediate response tactic by the responding officers? I thought so but based on my background I was unclear what other Law Enforcement believed or was taught. Again thanks so much for your insight and everything you've done to serve and protect as a LEO.

@@eriktildahl2492 CQB is essential in active shooter. We trained in four man teams and even in three man teams. Officers need to engage the threat especially at schools. We knew the dangers of doorway entry and usually it’s the second man into the room that gets hit due to reaction time. We learned to have a plan first entry staggers left and second to right to cover their areas. The third enters straight while the last man covers the rear. This was how we were taught. Practice is needed, otherwise, we all sat on our hunches and wait for instructions. Usually that’s a barricaded subject with one or two hostages. Someone shooting wildly on the other hand leaves you no options but a quick response in my opinion. A lot of mistakes occurred in Texas and only time to study what happened will it be known. I believe this Department based on its size and budget had no way of handling the situation effectively.

@@Sikpoop101 Yeah we got taught pretty the same as you guys in the beginning and then we adapted our own SOP's after that so I get exactly what you're saying. In your opinion do you think these guys tried to make entry using these tactics? Or just all messed up? Not trying to put blame on anyone but the shooter. It just seemed odd to me they said they needed riot shields and other special equipment. But a simple 8 man or even 4 man team could've went in fairly quickly and taken him out. Not trying to blame, just to gain more knowledge on how you guys operate and if you think these tactics should be in all departments?

@@eriktildahl2492 from my understanding the officers never even tried when they took fire from the shooter and remained behind concealment. The responding border patrol that arrived later had the shield. Still waiting for more accurate information, but I am not part of that department and the truth will most likely be deemed confidential for the investigation. Several months will pass before actual facts are released but the public will most likely forget or a new horrific incident take over the media.

As a father of 3 wonderful boys that are now men, I was told by doctors and teachers in the public school system that all of them needed ADD medicine 💊 for focusing issues and behavior problems. I took them out of the public school system. How many kids are taking prescription drugs? Mental health is the issue! Not to mention the gaming industry decentizing our children to kill characters with violence everyday. Appreciate you Mike. Thank you for all you do.

Right. I'm so tired of hearing people say, "We need more legislation!" what we need is better mental health, stricter punishment for drug dealers, and more people with guns protecting the schools. Off duty police protecting every school. I lived 2 blocks from Marjorie Stoneman in Parkland Florida when that shooting took place about 5 years ago. I was 2 miles from there working for Uber when that occurred. I was also carrying. That wouldn't have happened if I got his call. Good responsible people need to buy a gun, learn how to use it, and carry it with the proper permit. Go about their business.

1- What Mental illness did the shooter have and how did it lead to him committing this act 2- What do drug dealers have to do with this? 3- You had a team of people with guns outside the school doing nothing 4- On duty cops didn't protect it 5- If you got the call for this what would you have done? walked past the cops stood outside with a gun in your hand and got shot? or made it inside to find a barricaded door with the sound of gunfire and children screaming happening. And then what would you do shoot through the door?.

In this day and age, I'm an automation technician, I do access control and HVAC automation, with BluePoint, and other systems like it, there is no reason why if a shooter were to make it inside that doors can't be locked and steel doors in hallways cannot be activated to close, effectively locking that shooter in an area. I agree with you about secure checkpoints for entry. I too am calling our superintendents of our county schools, sheriffs office, city and state police. Congressmen and senators at the state level. While I mean no disrespect, all our schools have an SRO, they're mostly all old on the verge of or are retired officers, collecting a check. But these gentlemen are less fit than me, and are not able to run across campuses and be effective The things we can write code logic for these days and be able to control and monitor temperature for millions of dollars worth of server racks, control speeds of fans and water pumps bigger than the average home. Alert someone if a tamper switch on a smoke detector on a piece of ductwork in a random place in the building is loose. We can do all this for comfort, energy management, and insurance requirements. I ask Biden this... What is the life of just one child worth? America, I ask you this.... What can you do to spearhead action in your area? Taking gums from law abiding citizens is not a solution. Criminals do not obey laws, thats why the ban is and was ineffective, and because it did nothing and laws our systems put in place fail and have very little effect is because we worry more about offending a criminals rights than our law abiding citizens. This is why you'll never succeed in taking guns away. Perfect utopia does not exist. Be safe, stay armed, and be an asset to your community.
