In Greenwood, Indiana a 22 year old man with a glock 9mm took action and fired on an active shooter hitting him 8 of 10 rounds from 40 yards away. He was untrained but knew what to do and took action saving many many lives.... 80% hit rate in an active combat situation with adrenaline pumping. Untrained.... God Bless Him.

Jocko's rant about the chief "forgetting" his radio is 100% spot on. If you've spent 5 minutes in public safety, you feel naked without a radio. You are literally attached at the hip to your radio, it stays on your belt always. I've even accidentally taken my radio home at the end of my shift. I am wondering why his radio wasn't on his belt already, before the incident even began. In fact, most incident commanders I've seen have two or three radios. You have a mic that lets you operate hands free, so you can keep two hands on the gun or whatever else you're working on. You only need one hand briefly when you need to key your mic.

Police Chief’s are hardly cops. They’re politicians and executives. They don’t wear a gun belt and carry radios. They don’t wear bullet resistant vests. They wear a uniform shirt, usually with their rank obnoxiously displayed for the subordinates to genuflect to, and pants, and maybe carry a weapon in an off duty type holster. Most of them walk around pretending to be 4 star generals.

He should have taken one of theirs immediately. He’s blaming a lack of radio for his incompetence. Not that there’s no blame to be passed around. The 7-10 guys stacked up outside that classroom should have went in, orders or no orders.

I’m an armed, uniformed security officer at a private school. I get nothing but “thank you for being here” from parents, and many new students come to the school because of the added security - armed security, locked gates and cameras. That said, everyone I’ve come in contact with are 100% about keeping their children safe and could care less what it looks like.

100%. Unless you are completely blinded by ideology how do you justify armed security to protect your money but not your (and our countries) most value resources.... It's more to me about how a security / officer presents themselves. I don't think we need Rambo. We want personalable people that help raise our kids but when needed can go to war with a threat. There are lots of ways to do that. But beyond all the tricks, toys, strategies.. its about having people that will step forward to protect others. Stay vigilant...

Have you ever been in a situation involving firearms being directed towards you? If not then you have no idea how you'll act if the unfortunate day comes. Do you have regular training which involves how to deal with an active shooter, involving on the ground practice. If not. Then you really have no idea what to do.

We had a shooter at my son's high school. Three off duty cops in the civilian gear with just their side arms ran into the high school to neutralize the shooter. No hesitation and they did not have to wait for orders. They were from different departments. LAPD, LASD, and Inglewood yet they knew what their jobs where which is to stop the shooter and save the kids. Likewise when we had the North Hollywood here in LA, LAPD was outgunned and the assailants armor prevented the officers weapons from harming the suspects. But the took on the two bank robbers anyway and had to resort to going to a gun store to obtain high caliber rifles that could go through the robbers body armor. Because LAPD were so aggressive no lives were lost. My friends in LE are so furious that these cops stood around and did nothing.

The woman that jumped the fence to go and get her kids knowing she could die in the attempt has so much courage, her kids are going to be so proud of her I'm sure the community praises her as a hero as well. I'm sorry for all parents that lost their children and that were pepper sprayed or tazed so themselves couldn't do the job of saving their child's life. I graduated in 2012, and we had a school officer. We called her Fergie, she was armed, and she loved the kids at school. As a theatre kid, she’d improve with us and pretend to draw her gun, she never did, and we knew she just loved us. Sandy Hook happened after I graduated, and I knew in my heart, Fergie would have faced that bastard down. School officers don’t have to be scary, they can actually make you love them. If you have may adults running around the school with guns who is the Police to focus on. I can see more innocent people being shot. There is not clear answer for this.. It could go both ways. That being said I'd like to think that I'd try to go in after my child. But all this should of not been an issue because the cops should of made entry as soon as 3 or 4 cops get on scene. I have had conversations with my State training center about this for over 2 years ago. I know the Chief trainer in my State who is a former Marine. This moving in quickly by Cops is suppose to be standard practice now in every State In my State if you are the only office on scene in a rural area you get the first two people with guns to enter with you. Rural areas do the best they can.

As a former LEO I support massive, centralized overhaul of LEO hiring and training standards. It was a mess when I started, and has never improved. Unbelievable amounts of cronyism and nepotism when hiring. Initial training is insufficient. Countless hours of emphasis on chicken shit like marching and shoe shining. Not enough emphasis on first aid, mindset, defensive tactics, communication, decision making. Minimal stress inoculation training. Once you hit the beat training all but stops. Hours per year. Maybe 24 hours per calendar year of mandated training. And to circle back to poor hiring practice…all the cowards, yes men, shitbags, and slugs…once everyone knows who they are…you have them for 20, 25, 30 years. They dont get weeded out or forced out. They just exist. They are career liabilities and everyone knows it. But the administrations tend to get caught up head hunting people who piss them off by saying shit like I am now, and not the people who need to be weeded out. They will hold on to a fat coward shitbag yes man all day and witch hunt a stud who has the courage to ask questions.

I hold back tears every time I practice lockdowns with my littles-I give them assurances and my promises to do it right and best because I love them. I imagine the scenarios daily since the Uvalde incident. Preparing my heart for a worst case scenario I hope never comes.

As a full time single father of two minor boys, my heart is broken for those parents outside that institution, hearing the rounds being fired, while LE prevented them from retrieving their children. While the individuals with training waited for tactical gear and body armor, the parents were willing and understand, they are thier child's armor, and would willingly lay down their life so their child may live.

Anyone who has ever seen or met Arredondo in person knows immediately that the only breaching or room-clearing training he's ever taken part in would be that of the buffet or a table full of breakfast tacos. He was put into that school district police chief position by all the good ol boys, who are now in full-on circle the wagon mode. Arredondo was sworn in to the city council position secretly, in a closed ceremony a few days after this incident. The city of Uvalde will do everything to sweep this gross negligence under the rug by any means necessary. Arredondo's only goal within that incident was to shovel his responsibility as the incident commander off onto someone else, which is evident in his abject fear to make any type of decision. Jocko absolutely nailed it on all points, most importantly was Arredondo's ignorant decision to not take critical communications equipment, and his pathetic answer to save face by saying he was rushing into harms way with two hands on his gun...

I honestly think its a generation thing. Back in the early 2000s there was a shootout i think in tyler texas. A man with an AR-15 went and shot up a Texas courthouse. You literally saw on camara officer running in the line of fire towards the shooter. These dudes had some balls they disregarded their own safety and towards the prick as he was firing at them. That being said whats my generation people from the early 90s we are failing to step up to the plate and these younger generations aint looking to bright either. Thats why I believe we need to have a mandatory military service for anyone who is getting out of highschool for 3 years. We need to tough these generations up.

One of the men killed was a citizen named Mark Wilson who confronted the shooter David Arroyo with a revolver, shot him with a revolver, and when he had to reload, the shooter came around the car and executed him. There was a former Marine sniper (IIRC) that grabbed his M4, and jumped on the hood of one of the patrol cars while they chased him through town. They finally disabled his vehicle on the loop and the sharpshooter shot him right in the head. It was a tragic situation, but executed perfectly by police. The man shot his wife and son, and a few others (including the citizen Mark Wilson), and the police hunted him down and shot him dead like a dog.

My dad served with the 1st bat of the 75th ranger regiment. He spent alot of time trainning me always said the word is getting worse. between 13 and 17 years of age i was taught to fight with a rifle and hand gun, got me enrollled in bjj and later kickboxing, one man room clearing and cqc drills. Always go back to your tools and " The wrong decision is better than no decision". He was a great man and a true warrior. I was blessed. The other thing he pounded into me was before u learn to break something 1st u must learn to fix it and so he took me to 1st response trama training and other classes. Learn to heal and save before u learn to destroy and hurt people.

I worked on him for over 8 min the emt's had to pull me off. 16 people stood and watched including my brother while i fought for him the vary last time. They told me he had the widow maker heart attack and was dead when he hit the ground but i got a light irregular pulse at one point. in Israel, since the terror attacks of the 80's and early 2000's it is a standard to have a security guard in almost every public place (maybe except MOST restaurants) so I grew up in schools in which at every open gate - sat a lightly armed security guard, whose role was to check everyone who enters the school and is not supposed to be there. never once have I felt I was in prison those guards actually became a part of the social fabric we liked them and looked up to them they helped us when needed, were friends of our parents, and generally made our days better, since its always good to see another familiar face.

"Had to train their default mode to be aggressive", I worked for several years as a fire fighter, the first fire that I went to, we showed up and the house was very on fire(flames blowing out roof and windows), I remember thinking, "someone should call someone about that" and then realizing that someone already had, they had called me 😅and that made me take a second to think through our tasking to figure out my responsibility was. The whole situation was overwhelming, but because we had trained, I was able to figure out what task I was supposed to be performing. I figured out that I was supposed to be making sure no one was in the building, I joined up with my captain and began search operations. No people but we were able to save several pets. No grand heroics, but having and following procedures allowed us to keep the situation from getting worse. We got the people/creatures out of the building and put the fire out. None of those things were going to do themselves, but we practiced doing them. I did not get paid enough to make "it worth it", but I did want the chance to get to improve the lives of people in our community, the duty was the motivation....and practicing what to do lets you be aggressive. I am glad to never have been in a situation that was this dangerous, but we did practice doing the things for situations like this, and I think if it had come down to it, we would have been ready to act, I hope anyways, we did in other situations. The situation gets better when you put water on the fire/lead the bad guy. Then you are safe 😅

More than once had to wipe my eyes , it really touches one emotionally so heavily. I hope your discussion and the very valid points you make about mistakes and training are noted by your police authorities and that they make use of your hard earned experience and leadership qualities. I grew up in and still live close by to Oxford and I want to say I have tremendous respect for the Oakland County Sherifs because they responded and went right into the school without hesitation and neutralized the shooter very quickly. They obviously allocate a lot of time and money towards training and it really showed that day.

I’m a full time fire/medic in New England and we’ve trained with our PD locally on this… knowing what they’re gonna do and us coming in right behind to render aid. 2 out of 3 full scale training events we had blue on blue engagements and also on our side lost track of where folks we’re working. Now add another factor that happens in many areas. You said you word with the local PD and that is great. . But suppose it was one Highway Patrolman (trooper), and off duty federal agent, and a Sheriff's officer that first arrived. That is three and they need to go in. None of the three worked with you or each other but they are under obligation to go in. This could end badly but they have no choice. They don't need civilians running around as they try to take him down. I think civilians rushing in could be very dangers and even more so if some of the cops charging in are not in uniform.

I am an almost 30 year educator. This was a very important podcast. I hope echelon front looks into creating more programs and training for educators, as someone who attended a muster I know fellow educators would benefit greatly from the training. Schools are not pro-active and unfortunately rarely reflect at what has happened previously and make the necessary changes. Many of the same issues that happened in this case happened at Columbine. Schools very often just try to wish problems away. The Muster I attended opened with a discussion of the Crimean War and how the British did not learn lessons from that war contributing to the catastrophic results of WW1, I feel that was unfortunately a great analogy to use with many schools as on many issues we have had things happen that should have been "teachable moments" to learn from and make changes from, and that does not happen. Schools are often funded based on graduation rates, low discipline rates, attendance rates and unfortunately these priorities often conflict with basic safety issues. Add in issues of "confidentiality," 504s, IEPs, having to allow students to use the bathroom, restorative justice programs, issues over making students and staff wear ID, concerns over what is referred to as the "school to prison pipeline," funding following the students....these issues very often complicate basic safety issues. Again, I really think school systems: admin, teachers, students, parents could benefit greatly from the ideas of Extreme Ownership. Unfortunately, it requires wanting to pro-actively deal with issues and very often schools systems don't want to do that. Columbine was in the late 1990s, Sandy Hook, Parkland, the lessons should have been learned. What has changed?

I was kind of thinking the same thing.....After Columbine, what was done to prevent further horrific and tragic school shootings? I always thought police stations across the country would develop a swat/q.r.f type division dedicated to only a active school shooter. I don't have kids of my own but have a 13 year old niece who gets physically ill from nerves about going to school. It's so sad that kids now have to be scared to go to school.

We now know that there were nearly 400 law enforcement personnell on this scene (from local, state and feds) and not a single one took action for 40 minutes. It is a complete failure of not only one department, but American law enforcement in general. I'm glad that he brought up the concept of mentally preparing yourself to die. I remember accepting that when I joined the USMS, that I could very well be killed and/or be required to kill another person. Many, many cops never do this and so they go through their career afraid. This is why so many unarmed people get shot for no reason when a lower amount of force (requiring some more risk to the officer) would have stopped the threat. It doesn't help that even in my own training, I was told that my safety was the most important thing in a scenario. The vast majority of "officer survival training" was aimed at scaring us about dying. It's a fundamental issue in all Law Enforcement training in the US.

Insane... to hear the excuses, the coms breakdowns, lack of leadership, lack of training, heroism of parents and children, the horrific losses of innocents. As a HS teacher I'd do the training for sure, but it would need so much training, on top of all duties. Do I trust some of the other teachers to do this? Well...no. That's why I support dedicated armed security first, not just "arm the teachers".

@@adamb8317 some of the most solid, best teachers I had were army, navy, & marine veterans. And some former LEO. They really made an impact when I was a little high school hellion. They cared about us & cared about the example they set for us. They’d never known it bc I was too busy getting into trouble lol , but I knew they’d keep us safe. Never any doubts of that. I went to a private military school. There was only one there that didn’t belong bc he was like a bully, but he wasn’t a teacher, he was just a tac officer.

But it's a very (of course) military/tactical perspective, which focuses on the symptoms, not the cause (and yes, he says that). It's sickening to me that kids and teachers need all kinds of shooter drills and uniforms and equipment and automatic doors and metal detectors etc. And that we need AI to scan through every text message and automatically call police - i think Joko has never spent a minute of his life on a online message bard, because this AI would SWAT the hell out of millions of people. And i don't want badly trained officers in schools or a badly trained SWAT team kicking in my door. There are countless cases of school resource officers which really fuck up situations because teachers use them for normal discipline stuff and students get actually arrested (with a paper trail which can ruin their live) for nothing. Also don't forget the heroic school resource officer with 0 minute reaction time in parkland and how he stood outside waiting. Thank god i live in Germany where all of this is not a problem at all. Anyways, Joko has a specific view (based on his career and business interest), but for example his balanced view and self correction at 1:15:50 is why you got to respect the guy.

I will elaborate for you: thanks for asking: Joe Rogan has far more influence than Joe Biden. In terms of what he is able to accomplish. Joe Biden can only do what his administration allows him to do. If you think a half dead zombie is calling the big shots that's exactly what they would want us to believe. The real shot callers are the rich people who lobby for these decisions. Yes he still has ability as a politician, but the real Shot Caller is the agendas themselves. I remember a viral vid of random strangers stepping in to stop a person abusing their dog on the subway. But about 20 armed (&shielded) men w/ 300+ more outside couldnt break from the pack to save kids! Prayers for those children and teachers.

The fact that we now learned that the classroom wasn’t even locked in some ways makes this a lot worse, but I think your analysis on the failure to develop and act on a coherent plan is one of the first useful takes I’ve heard on this absolute tragedy. There are a lot of people going into conspiracy theory land, saying that this was a plot to overturn 2A, and I really can’t blame them due to all of the lies in the media and lack of information on this and so many similar events, but your take on this makes a lot more sense and actually offers reasonable suggestions to prevent these events from happening. And I remember having a school resource officer in my high school. An actual armed and uniformed police officer. He was friendly to the students and intervened in some more serious fights among students in the cafeteria. I don’t think it made the school feel like a prison at all. The people saying things like that unfortunately aren’t thinking critically about this. It would be great if nobody committed violence against others. But that’s just not how things work, or have ever worked.
