British Army training film explaining the interplay between armor and mechanized forces in a reconnaissance role. Good film footage of Her Majesty's armed forces during the Cold War.

The time between 1979 and now is longer than 1979 and 1939.

And today the British army is less ready for a real war than it was In 1939 by 1979 standards.

Giving O Group location over the air is mad . The Tank Unit is Ajax Squadron of 2nd Royal Tank Regiment (actually a Battalion) The Sgt at 4:53 is Sgt Johnny Rose, an ex boy soldier from the Junior Leaders Regiment. He and I both did the All Arms pre parachute selection course and for me he was the motivation helped me to complete. He was incredibly fit (well we all were but he was super fit) and went on shortly after this film was made, to serve with special forces.

Catterick Garrison in February is not a very pleasant place to be and that's all that I have to say about this video apart from the whole thing is making me feel extremely old. I was in 3RTR when this incredibly old fashioned film was made. I can remember watching these films during training including one called "Theater of War" if my memory is correct. All these videos were classified at the time

I joined in 1975. Seeing some of these pre DPM combats and wooden stocked SLR’s lead me to believe this film is way earlier than ‘79. We all had Bakelite furniture on our weapons in ‘75……
@brakenoodle1053 күн бұрын
I joined the infantry in 72 and non DPM combats were just being phased out and large rank insignia was replaced with small tactical stripes. We did however have wooden furniture SLRs.

The Chinagraph pencil seen in the beginning were a vital tool. I still have a black, green and two red ones although the “leads” are dry and hard now…..

Back in the day when our Armed Forces were extremely well funded and our Army, in particular, was a decent size with proper local infantry Regiments, had a large MBT force, had many more armoured vehicles and a lot more artillery, both towed and self propelled.🇬🇧✌️

You might be surprised to know that according to The Institute For International Studies, The U.K. has in 2024 a higher military spending than any other country in Europe (not counting Russia), and is in fact the fifth highest in the world, behind U.S.A. China, Russia and India. Surprising isn't it ?

FV432s still going in 2024. Interesting to see not everyone in this footage had DPM. Was this the changeover period? I thought DMP was universal by 79.

@@numberstation Yeah me too (I wonder if they had a model shop that built the tank models from scratch or from commercial kits?) but also the title cards look superimposed with some kind of CGI also. It looks really cool and super clear anyway.
@numberstation5 ай бұрын
I’m guessing they’re commercial kits, back then I remember Chieftains being available in 1/35 by Tamiya, 1/72 by Airfix and something like 1/48 by Bandai. The film quality (and my old eyes!) makes it a bit difficult to see clearly. It’d be interesting to see some Warsaw Pact instructional videos of the time, I think.
