Mike, I just want to say as a new almost 22 year old homeowner, you have helped a ton! Had to remortar some headjoints on a block foundation thats roughly 25 years old and now am wanting to parge the exterior after i dig down some to get more contact. You have been a big source of information for young and old viewers. Thank you so much.

Hi Mike. I've used a very similar formulation for almost 20 years. The cost of driveway sealers have doubled since pre-pandemic, but sealer is still reasonable for a 5 gallon bucket. However, you can quickly escalate the cost of driveway repair with specialty crack and depression fillers. I only use an acrylic, water based, sealer emulsion. I remove 1 gallon of sealer from the pail and add 4 scoops (2 cup scoop) of clean, washed sand and a scoop of Portland cement. The Portland seems to react well, since the sealer is water based. This is my mix for the surface sealer, which dries rock hard with a non-slip surface. Increasing the volume of sand and Portland can be mixed to a very firm mixture to fill large cracks or holes and a sloppier mix will fill the small 1/8" cracks and can be floated to fill depressions. No specialty crack fillers or depression fillers required. I re-do my driveway about every 3 years, since it was installed in 1958. When renewed and sealed, neighbors out walking their dogs stop to ask who I had to replace the driveway and the cost. They are shocked to learn that it's the original 1958 driveway (14 ft. X 95 ft.)

You've taught me so much about concrete Repair, now I can help you. Next time go to home depot, menards lowes what ever, get a mixing drill fill a bucket 2/3rd with sealer and as your spinning the seal pour in slowly Grey or black poly meric sand it will dry like a flexible gel concrete and will dry black. I love you are still doing videos, Mike. If you're ever in the chicago area, please let me take you to dinner. I owe you for what You've taught me.

i bought a block of the crack sealer that they put in a heated machine and pour into cracks, and it is nice that modified asphalt that is rubbery, but it is a pain to sit there melting the block and troweling it into cracks and such the good part is there is no drying time it is good after it cools back down to room temperature. this looks like a lot easier method of filling in larger cracks and such because the sealer is kind of watery by itself. I thought you went to Florida to retire not switch to paving driveways down there LOL
@bnasty267
@bnasty267 11 ай бұрын
That's what I use as well. It's basically a big block of tar. My trick is to heat it up and melt parts of it in an old cast iron skillet on a large propane burner (for deep frying turkey/clam bakes.) The goal is mostly to glob it on pouring it out of the pan, then you can get it to fill better/flatten out with a regular weed burning torch. Messy job, but that stuff works better than any of the goop they sell at the hardware store, which is why the real road crews use it. Driveway sealer is basically just paint for your driveway. Pretty much a snakeoil scam.

I've also had good results using a standard cold patch asphalt mixture, tamping it into cracks or small holes and hitting it with a propane torch to heat, melt and improve the bond.

Hello Mike, I finished slurring my concrete driveway up north it came out excellent, many that walk buy asked me when did I replace the concrete, I told them it’s a slurry. Here’s my formula…. used a 10 qt pail full of 100% portland cement, used 1 qt of white playsand, and 2 qts of masons hydrated lime, mix dry, then added 1 qt of white acrylic bonding agent and about 2 qt of water, mix well, could be a very loose slurry, may have to sprinkle a hand full of cement before applying to the surface. Use a squeegee horizontally to the driveway to apply, this should fill minor chips in the concrete, don’t be concerned about excess slurry when squeegeeing because before making another pass, use a 24” wide light bristle street broom and brush out lightly the slurry, this will help fill in depressions and leave a broom finish that will look like a brand new concrete poured driveway, right after your complete and able to walk on the surface, use a flat edge shovel and knock down all high snots (yes snots) in the slurry, don’t worry you’re just smoothing it out. Then I used a leaf blower to blow all the dust away, let sit for 3 days, then apply a concrete clear gloss Dutchboy solvent sealer with a 9” roller, let set for 72hrs before driving on it. can walk on it much sooner. I would like to send you some pictures let me know how. Thanks from a guy like you that work construction for 40 yrs.

I've tried every product on the market. None of them work, just tried the pli stix last year, yet to be seen how well it holds up, almost one season now, thinking we can remelt it with the flame torch if the cracks separated. It is flexible and seemed to keep out the water when it was fresh. Wasn't so easy to do though as we used three 50' packages. It's about time someone makes something that will level out the cracks. Looking forward to your patent and product, let us know as soon as it's on the market please. (hopefully your base bonding mix too) Always wished they made cold patch to match the asphalt rocks to look the same too. If you've ever patched a hole with it, I think everyone wonders why they haven't yet. Used another product that was like black cement, I was so hopeful, it dried harder than the asphalt, it looked nice but then it pushed broke up the asphalt around it, having a steep sloped driveway doesn't help either... same theory as making the mortar softer than the brick for the fail point... it did work on the hill like burm edging the sides to build up the low spots or around the grated drainage, but thats about it. Hey Mike! I have watched MANY of your concrete videos & have learned so much! Love me some mud!! LOL. I have a question for asphalt driveway in Northern NJ climates. My asphalt driveway (approx. 20 years old-in good shape). I have a large 2-3" driveway crack spanning the width of my asphalt driveway that turned into a "Y" (smaller cracks). It's been filled 3 years ago before sealcoating but the crack appears to be "Growing". What is the best material to use for repairing this? Do I hire an asphalt company to repair or is this something of a DIY project? Thanks in advance for your help with this Mike 😃

Hi Mike I really appreciate your concrete videos I don’t know a lot about concrete but I’m really contemplating on getting into 3/D concrete printing houses so that’s how I found you. I have been a asphalt layer for about 22 years down in Nevada and up in Washington state. I got a kick out of your mix and I really appreciate your extent of crack filling and I hope you make a good bit on your patent of it. After cleaning with a blower or broom we but down SS1 and call it tack I don’t think the other name is appropriate here . After it sets up then we paved it . We always used this rubbish oil heated up and put sand on it then you set for a few days and then you sweep it up. But I was going to tell you we always have a five gallon tank of propane and a weed burner to heat up if things are too high rake it down and use a hand tamper for some compaction but the burner is always your friend. I hope you the best and I really appreciate your videos. Thank you very much man.

@MikeHaduck how long would you recommend waiting after the application to know if it works? I have some cracks on our asphalt ranging from 1/8" wide to 2" x 3" deep.

@@MikeHaduck so much is done with seal coat. Your mix with sand on cracks and medium size filling is great. Seal coat looks good but like the painted stripes in a parking lot you see they sit proud of the surface . The coating protects against wear down. It needs to be done. Crack fillers are expensive and don’t work as well as your sand mix.Love your video’s.
