Make sure your units are set to centimeters and not meters. To bake it out to final mesh. Switch to FX mode, under MASH menu > utilties > switch MASH geometry type to instances. then under MASH menu > utilities > Bake Instancer to objects.

First of all, great tut Mike, but I wanted to help and expand some of the info you gave us. For those of you having issues getting your objects to duplicate with the correct orientation. Try using an Offset Node and playing with the Offset Rotations.

I really enjoyed this one. A few things though. With the supports for the bench duplicating the curve you planned on using for the board distribution and using the same technique with a much lower amount would have been great for distributing the weight-bearing supports on the bench. Also IF I remember right you did a video on extruding an object along a path. This could have been used to create a frame that follows the path so that it looks like the boards are not floating in the air. So just using the same shaped curve three separate times could free up a lot of time speeding up the workflow. Thanks for the awesome tutorials.

U can also use motion path and create animation snapshot, usually when making repeating objects on characters like a zipper will try one method if it doesn't work the other one will.

I like your videos. In your model all boards are exaclty the same. At 1:11 you can see, that each board is slightly different depending on the angle to each other. I was waiting how you gonna handle that.
@retorique4 жыл бұрын
I was wondering that too. I'm not near my computer to try this, but I was thinking that you could try inverting the process by modelling the gaps: Create a single continuous volume with the shape of the curve and the height and width of the boards, and then use the method in the video to create thin volumes with the dimensions of the gap between the boards. Then apply a substract boolean operation to the first volume and voilà. It's dirty but it might work.

@Mike Hermes Very useful video that pointed me in the right direction! However, I’m looking for a way to use a variable set of objects. Specifically, different looking planks (wrong word?) on a hanging bridge. Is it possible/recommendable to use this method, but having the objects alternate or, even better, be picked randomly? … If it is, dare I make a wish for a follow-up at some point? :-)

Ok so I know this is a little bit dated feedback, and im not the person who made the original tutorial, but I'd like to point out that I think I know what was causing your issue. I was having a similar problem in maya 2019 with MASH, turns out that the expectations of MASH are that your curve's first vertex point needs to be at world 0,0,0 and your object you're duplicating along the curve via MASH also needs to be at world 0,0,0 and then make sure you also have initial state selected. This was the only way I could get the assets to appear on the curve. Once this parenting happens, with both assets at world 0,0,0 -- you can then select both the curve and your MASH object (the one thats bound to your curve) and you can freely sorta move them around with the MASH functionality still working. Hope this helps someone.

I haven't been able to find the solution to this so far. when I attach my curve to my mash which is just a cube in this case, my array of cubes goes -y a ton and +x a bit, I have tried so many things but they never go anywhere near my curve. the only difference i can tell is that my curve is along the vertical plane, not a horizontal one please help
@moosehead133 жыл бұрын
Make sure the initial location of the cube is at 0,0,0 in world space and that you have done a "Freeze Transform" before you create your MASH network

Well it is still so unintuive in maya. On the other hand, if you do it in blender, you can just use array modifier and then curve modifier and that is it.

If you understand nodes, ( which I am not saying you don't) then Maya is awesome,...old saying for Maya,...Maya is Nodes with Attributes Attached ... Open node editor, as a animator that drew on paper first before using computers, I hated them, but once I let go of all "Oh my gosh I didnt learn to draw to do this" brain, I became aware of the poeer in this software... Want to use dopesheet?, Its there,.. want to work with code? Its there,...use other 3d programs but topology is bad, bring it in to Maya,...rendering has massively improved.... Anyway, got to go back to working on my project.... Thanks Maya
