i do cuttings, fall seeding, and random expirements like planting aloe and pomegranate a bit out of zone, all kinds of things in my garden. i shovel my driveway snow onto my garden beds. the more it snows, the more the plants are insulated. i stop around the middle of my shin. half way to knee high. then i move to the next area. works great. im in tri-cities, eastern WA, 7b. its an arid desert but i know this area used to be woods before the pilgrims messed it up so i treat it like im planting in the woods. most ppl around here only grow roses, cacti, and other desert plants and native flowers.
@MikeKincaid793 жыл бұрын
Have you ever watched any of those documentaries about greening the desert? I'm fascinated by this. There are people in different parts of the world who have taken a plot of land in a dry arid location and, through planting trees and other vegetation, have been able to bring life back to that part of the desert.

Great video with a lot of good information! The difference between broadleaf evergreens and deciduous leaves was interesting too. I struggle with the watering issue because my cuttings are quite far from the house and we have to turn off the outside water in the winter. I water occasionally using a pump spray system that is usually used for pesticides. It’s a pain, but it works. Thanks for your enthusiasm, Mike!

It will never die as long as they are placed in a protected place like greenhouse. For those who have only few cuttings to grow like 3 or four pieces, you could just place even beside your house outside, covered it with vinyl and it will be ok. Me, I just put it in the garage with air that freely passes in and out and they are fine. Btw, my garage is huge (wide and long) as well. Half of it has rooftop. To totally put rooftop is already taxable.

Hi Mike, i have tried my first Gloxinia leaf progation and after about 2 months i am seeing 1 new growth about an inch high. It looks fragile tough. I know it would need light, but in the east here with its Fall overcast days at times it seems not enough...though i could be wrong. I do not have a lighting system. Any ideas on how to prolong this growth? Hope your hand is feeling better.
@MikeKincaid795 жыл бұрын
The hand is doing fine. Part of the winter time lighting issue is not just the amount of light during the day but the length of daylight. The shorter days stimulate fruiting and ultimately dormancy. You can get around this with indoor lighting and timers (which is what I do) and you can do it relatively cheap with t8 bulbs.

I just propagated some different plants and want to know how cold is too cold outside for new cuttings. I am in Australia and temperatures can get to 5 degrees Celsius over night. Should I bring the cuttings inside when its going to be really cold? I have them on a table in a porch out the back. No sun gets in there though. Should i get a mini green house and if is so is plastic or mesh covered better?
@MikeKincaid79 Жыл бұрын
There are many variables. What type of plants, what type of cuttings, I need to understand your weather more down there at this time of year. The one main variable that you will be up against is that rooting generally stops below 55 degrees F. So if you're trying to root plants outdoors, you'll need bottom heat or a greenhouse.
@jeffbradford19994 жыл бұрын
I have started with 2 clear plastic containers using clear solo cups system you described in an earlier video. Most of the cuttings are rooting. There are hydrangeas, viburnum, budelia. My question is to overwinter these will the be ok in a covered patio in the contaiiners as is. What other advice do you have to take my cuttings through the colder months?
@MikeKincaid794 жыл бұрын
Yes, keep them in the containers on a covered patio. You can place all the cups in a large plastic tote if you want and then cover with a clear lid but twist the lid to the side so air flow can get in there and humidity doesn't build up through the winter.

Mike, I am totally new to this I live in Canby Oregon. Thank you for making these videos. I know you can guarantee anything I am just asking you from experience. can I cut some today put them in a propagation bin in a green house and will they root?
@MikeKincaid794 жыл бұрын
Yes, now is the time to take cuttings. I typically like to take mine in August but I know rhododendron nurseries that take there's later in the season, like right now. Bottom heat is helpful. The elevation doesn't matter. I'm a little over 400 feet above sea level here.

I read a comment about very cold temperatures and how you talk about your winter's being 12. As long as the plants you are growing survive a certain temperature (i.e. still in the ground) then you should be able to keep them through the winter in pots as long as they are protected from the wind and snow, etc., correct?

@MikeKincaid792 жыл бұрын
As long as the plants you are propagating are cold hardy to your region, you'll be able to do it. If not, you'll have to grow them indoors where it's warmer.
@rdg5153 жыл бұрын
What’s the difference between that propogation frame and using the tote method? Is it just that the tote isn’t as insulated?
@MikeKincaid793 жыл бұрын
I like the frames better for doing large numbers of cuttings. The wood also acts as a moisture buffer. It absorbs and gives back moisture. The frame is not perfect and has very slight air gaps to allow for very small amounts of air exchange/flow, which I believe is helpful in getting fresh air in and expelling a little heat. I use the totes for small projects that I do for videos.
@luigi5890 Жыл бұрын
Would there be a problem taking you cuttings inside to continue growing? They could be watered and given heat. (Blueberries)
@MikeKincaid79 Жыл бұрын
You could do that. You’d need warmth and light through the winter.

Hey! Love your videos. I've noticed pretty much all of the hardwood cuttings i put into my soil and mulched are swelling green, have you ever seen this before?
