Hi, I like your propagating videos. I myself have propagated a lot of fig cuttings, just cutting short lengths and sticking them into an unused corner of a raised bed or a pot of soil, no rooting hormone or heat. I‘ve always found that almost all these cuttings root amazingly well without any special care. The way I discovered that it worked was that I used some of my neighbour‘s fig prunings as peasticks, and they all rooted! I‘ve given lots of little fig trees to friends and also planted 6 of them near our house in Sardinia.

Thanks for your video and enthusiasm about rooting. I bought 2 different varieties of fig cuttings late January and set them in pots with coconut coir and put them inside on heating mats and under fluorescent lights, but began experiencing fungus gnats. Treated them with hydrogen peroxide. Then I found your videos. and decided I needed to try your method. At the same time I got some fresh cuttings of 2 other fig varieties and set up about 20 cuttings in clear cups, put them all in plastic containers insulated with shredded redwood bark, then put them on seed heating mats outside under the patio (northern California). After 18 days, I found about 7 of the new cuttings were showing roots! I even tipped an older cutting out of the pot and saw a happy little root! I am so super-excited that they are 'happening'! Thanks for sharing your methods and experiences that work.

Great video, Mike. A couple of suggestions: First when pushing a cutting coated with growth harmone into the rooting medium, if you just push it into the medium all the growth harmone will rub off by the very act of pushing the cutting into the medium. A better way would be to first make a deep hole in the medium with a pencil-thick stick and then gently place the cutting into the hole and tamp the medium around the cutting. Second point is NEVER pull the cutting out of the medium to check if any roots have developed. Instead wait patiently until you can see the roots through the translucent cup. Dragging the cutting out like that would surely break off any tender roots that may have developed.
@justblast41115 жыл бұрын
He’s right and I agree with his comment,it’s the worst thing you can do to pull it out to check roots,

Hi Mike! Thanks for all the info! Our fig tree is in a spot I never check because my hubby planted it a few years ago and never mentioned it! Actually the fatter the better in this case. You can root inch thick fig cuttings. The thicker the cutting the more energy it has to produce roots. I have rooted a cutting 2.5" thick. Good idea on setting cups inside medium. I'm going to try that next time. Many people do all kinds of things to get fig cuttings to root. All I do every year is stick cuttings in pots outside in the garden and let them go. I have at least a 95% success rate. The first year I grew them I did the same thing as you. I was so excited I kept pulling them up to look. I found out it really stunts their growth. I know it's exciting though.

my wife had a trakhoe put one over the fence about six feet. it had such a root wad as the tree was 20 yrs old. we left it on top of the lawn and placed oat straw over the root wad and kept it watered for the summer. Our lawn cracks with summer weather two and three feet down. high clay content so we put some sand on the straw and some mulch. the tree made two crops of figs that year. ?? I prefer fig newtons to raw figs though. I stuck a broken limb in a pot of potting soil but it didn't try to set roots. NOW I have to try this... thanks for the project.!! figs grow in S Cal pretty easily. Now I live in Willamette Valley and find they grow here too. Maybe i'll start over with the Moringa seeds again too. I really liked seeing you put bark around the outside of the cups for heat retention. Bark does hold heat easily as my 20" planter boxes showed me last summer. My Shasta daisies seem to be wintering Ok with the bark under them.

Hi, Mike, thank you for your info and your presentation is clear. I wonder if one of the tips I have and using i helpful for you and others in some way. I use activated charcoal for water restoring and keep dry as if too moisture, fight diseases, mold, fugus etc, clean the air (from plant), and water. I am not sure if it really helps on get away from insects because I do find some, as I only use few activated charcoal. The best of activated Charcoal is Binchō-tan. I hope it is helps.
@youresoakinginit21135 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Lee Yeah, the horticultural charcoal should keep any standing water that might collect in the bottom of the tote sweet. I would be tempted to put a couple holes in the tote itself for drainage. I don't think that's necessary though, if you add only enough water to maintain moisture.

Mike,That was fun to watch. Interesting how the figs are easier to root like you said. Nice not having to think about mold and fungus. I don't have an extensive setup like you wish I did. But I like experimenting. Would you try to do Rhodies the same way? I thought my experiment would work but the roots didn't come out. I said it was working, but, I was going off of the fact I had top growth and didn't want to mess with the ziplock yet thinking they would have roots. When I opened the bag I had several sticks with the top growth and no root system. Noticed the sticks were getting fungus so they were unhealthy, top and bottom. Too much moisture. Stuck a couple with top growth in medium w/Hormodin in hopes for root growth but the new growth died off. Still leaving the hardwood cuttings in hopes it will work. They are in open pots in the house.Thanks,Jeff

This is a great video. I've have unsuccessfully tried to propagate a medicinal tree from Chile, S.A. called boldo (boldus peumus). It is a rare tree and difficult to find cuttings but I know where I can get a few. I am anxious to try this method. You note that fungus and rotting threaten the success of propagation. My mentor at a botanical garden where I volunteer confirms this. He told me that the trick of propagation is to get it to root before it rots. Your idea is ingenious because the heat from below will help speed up the rooting process. Rooting hormone usually has anti-fungal powder in it. Have you ever experimented with enhancing propagation results by using a fungicide? Did you find it was helpful and, if so, what fungicide do you recommend? BTW, you have a neat, positive, constructive energy and your enthusiasm is contagious. I am eager to try your bottom-heat propagation method.

Can I do this process in late summer or early fall?...My Dad passed away and we are selling the house...my Dad's fig tree is very big and I want to replant what I can at my home before the house sells so the tree will stay in our family...I love your videos! Also, can I travel with fig cuttings (about 3 hours) and do I have to prep them for travel?...thanks!
@MikeKincaid795 жыл бұрын
Early fall would be better. You want to take the cuttings after the wood is more firm and starts to turn brown. I wait until dormancy once the weaves have fallen off but i think you would be OK if you took them a little earlier.

can we use hot or warn water little bet every day to keep warm temperature
@MikeKincaid793 жыл бұрын
I don't think that would work. You need to keep a consistent temp and the hot water would cool too much in between watering.

Mike, I planted a Chicago Hardy in the ground this past spring because I have read that it can survive down to 20 degrees. It has exploded with growth and is over 10' tall. It is suppose to get down to 29 degrees this Friday here in Missouri and the tree still has 60-75 green figs still on the tree. Will the fruit itself be ok or should I wrap the whole tree. Not sure what to do to save the fruit until it gets ripe.
@MikeKincaid795 жыл бұрын
The fruit will probably not ripen if it's getting that cold there but leave the branches and the breba fruit should ripen next summer.

I have some cutting going in pots that are budding out, but like you said, I have some rooting but more buds then roots. Question can I pinch off the buds and leaves off to aid in root growth? I have chantel and brown turkey.

Never tried that but I would just let nature take its course at this point.

I am rooting fig cuttings, black mission, some look like they are putting on what looks like figs and leaves. Should I break off the developing fig?
@MikeKincaid793 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you want better root development.

Great video! I would have tried this if I would have known before I did my propagation on my figs. Some made it some rotted out but the ones that did are doing fine and growing roots. I got too much top growth and little roots, so I know the issue you're talking about. Question, when should I feed them and transplate them?
@MikeKincaid796 жыл бұрын
You can feed them as soon as you get roots growing but start sparingly with the fertilizer until they put some good growth on and can tolerate more. Don't transplant until the roots are well established and filling the current cup or pot or you're likely to break roots off.

Hello I have take some cuttings from a big old fig tree. A couple are really big : 12 inches main trunk and five branches coming off that each at least a foot long, some almost 2 foot. I'm wondering if I should root the main trunk and have a little tree already, or cut the tree up into lots of little cuttings? Thanks in advance :-)
@MikeKincaid796 жыл бұрын
I like rooting bigger pieces. Give it a try and let us know how they turn out.

Thanks for a great video Mike and for sharing your method. Have you tried propagating olives, lemons, oranges in that way and were they successful? Would love you to try these if you haven't already. Your heat mat does make a lot of sense now that you've explained it so eloquently.
@MikeKincaid797 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, glad you like the video! I haven't tried those trees because they just wouldn't survive in my area, it gets too cold, but sounds like a great experiment!

loved the video on figs! ive tried to propagate leyland cypress, or other cypress/arorvitae as well, with zero success..hard to believe..Do you think this method will work for evergreens?Also, its pretty cold now in long island, ny, so best with new growth?the reason i ask, is the figs were woody, so you never know!
@MikeKincaid797 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this will work for evergreens like arborvitae! I propagated some green giant arborvitae last winter using this method. Right now is the time to take cuttings of arborvitae and similar evergreens.

So if it has buds/shoots coming out of a limb I want to cut that is not a good idea right.
@MikeKincaid796 жыл бұрын
right
@gregbrooks95466 жыл бұрын
All of the limbs have leafed out but if there is one that has no buds on it but still has leafs coming out the end will that work to cut and root out. Maybe I am impatient but I need figs I'm hooked
@1cleandude3 жыл бұрын
So after rooting and leaves form how long before you up pot and/or go to ground? Thanks for your time and expertise!🙏🏻
@MikeKincaid793 жыл бұрын
I like to leave them in the pot until they get solid roots filling out the pot. I would wait a year to put in the ground. They may do ok if you plant right away but you will have to baby a rooted cutting that goes directly in ground.
@1cleandude3 жыл бұрын
@@MikeKincaid79 Thanks Mike much appreciated! I tried your method without the heat in June ‘20 with a 100% success rate and couldn’t believe it! Only wish I could get one citrus cutting to take! They are tough! Thanks again!🙏🏻

did the one with the root which broken off survive? im asking because im propagating a lombardy poplar and i accidently broke all the roots i think there was only 2 roots, will it regrow them? there is no green growth yet.
@MikeKincaid794 жыл бұрын
Poplars grow roots fairly easily so it may start growing roots again. I can't remember if it survived or not because it's been about 3 years.
@3ijnweu3oq34 жыл бұрын
@@MikeKincaid79 yea i think those roots took less than 2 weeks to grow, also it can start growing roots when all the roots are gone?

QUESTION: I've got a grafted Peter's honey, I don't know what type of fig the roots are, so if I took a cutting for the top part, from the Peter's honey, will the growth be the blend of both types?
@MikeKincaid793 жыл бұрын
No, the new plant will be a genetic clone of the Peter's Honey.

I just potted up my fig cuttings yesterday..My twigs. I used peat moss mixed with perlite. They are in indirect sun but it's been a hundred degrees here almost every day. From your newer videos I'm assuming I don't need a heat mat.. I guess I don't!?. Also though I went ahead and put humidity domes .. Dr pepper bottles with holes poked in them.. Should I take those off? I'm binge watching fig videos so that I can try to get it right. I don't want to lose these guys. I've got three different kinds of figs.
@MikeKincaid794 жыл бұрын
I personally don't like to cover my hardwood fig cuttings with any kind of humidity done. They just don't need it as hardwood cuttings and it creates more problems.

I have figs to take cuttings from. It is now sept. In Arkansas. Can I take cutting from my trees now at earl fall weather? ? The cuttings will be in a controlled environment. And artificial light. What do you think. DO IT OR WAIT TILL EARLY SPRING. THANK YOU.
@MikeKincaid797 жыл бұрын
Personally, I'm going to wait until late winter/early spring. I don't want to have to deal with a bunch of new little plants all winter in an artificial environment that really should be outside in nature to do their best. You could take some cuttings now for fun and experiment but I recommend the bulk of your cuttings being taken just before spring starts.

Are you using soil and bark or just bark?

Just bark. You don't want any soil in your propagation medium.

Hey I have only one fig cutting from a strong plant, cut in the winter, to play with, it has two leaves and a very small bud (~1/4inch tall) at the top of the cutting, would you recommend cutting the leaves and leaving the bud or cutting the bud+leaves all together?
@MikeKincaid796 жыл бұрын
Leave the bud, cut the leaves.

So here we are in December in ny.Temps at night in 20s and 30s.Growing season is over.After watching your fig video, i am intrigued.I have a setup in the boiler room,average temp say 65 degrees.I just ordered a heat mat from amazon.I would like to take some cuttings of Leyland cypress, Arborvitae,and some other evergreens.I was planning to get some moist planting medium, and plant some cuttings, under diffused light.For this, i will just put plastic between light and cuttings, but not enclosed, Does this sound like a reasonable plan?
